Prime Time: Safety BARR

Hey there Dave. Just so you aren’t alone in your corner, I’ll shoot you the same Q I shoot at the good Dr L. You might remember a while back I asked you about artificial sweetener causing the same problems as sugar. Or you might not…either way, I saw on tv this MD talking about aspartame poisoning. He said, amongst other things, that it can cause paradoxal hypoglycemia. Now how can that be? [/quote]

A lit search turned up the idea that a breakdown product of aspartame (and it’s metabolites) is potentially toxic.

There don’t seem to be any solid supporting data in humans, although giving high doses to your pet rat isn’t a good idea. In fact, the human data show safety of this product.

In other words, it’s not something to worry about.

I rather enjoy the look on the face of the guy in the background…

Barr,

You don’t really have bad gas do ya? Gawd, you should’ve told me that BEFORE I agreed to room with you at SWIS!

Stay strong

Sorry to hear about your misfortune Mike. It was nice knowing you.

I’m just glad that I don’t have to share a room with him at Staley’s Bootcamp next month.

Take care,

Ryan

Just got home from school and saw this post so heres what I have to ask.

I have a lower body workout that looks like this.

Mon:
DB Split Squats (3x20) 60 sr
reverse hyper(hamstrings) I don’t know the numebr of sets and reps to use for this any ideas?
One leg DB squad with one leg on the bench other out front.(2x10)60sr

Tues:
Barbell Jump Lunges(6x6)80%-60-70sr
DB Diagonal Lunges(2x20)

Wed:if tuesday workout is missed it gets picked up on wed

Thurs:
Deadlifts-Heavy-6x3
Stiff Leg Deads-4x3
Squats from rock bottom-3x5
Friday:
Stepups-3x20

Thats the main part of the workout. I can fit something on Friday but I don’t really know what else woudl be good to do. I’m concentrating on hip and knee dominant movements on the various days.

I just want to ask you if everytihng looks cool, and what can I do for my upperbody with the extra 5-10 minutes I have left on those lifting days?

Wow, it took me a second to clue in on your name. LOL I just typed out a couple of questions myself, but I guess I know the answers to them now. LOL

That’s a lot of volume in addition to your speed work! How often do you run?

I know the coaches largely dictate your training, so if I could get away with only 3 sessions per week, I’d do Mon, Wed, Fri.

Classic bench and rows can be done of non-leg days, and I actually train arms on sprinters if they can get away with it.

Core work is another critical component that can be added (second in importance only to legs).

As you the reverse hyper question, I’d do single leg 3x8.

So I’d move Tues to Wed, and Thru to Friday (again, assuming you need to train legs that often).

Whew! Hope that helps!

BTW-I’ll have my web site up soon and will have both consultation and program design options available.

Actually, between you and me, I take special tabs to give me bad gas when I’m around Doc Ryan, just to torture him.

Here’s a Sneak Preview from my upcoming article: The Creatine Controversy

Ultimately the ?problem? with CEE lies in the use of the creatine transporter, which can be seen like an open doorway into an otherwise impenetrable cell. While CEE might theoretically obviate this function, the transporter serves a second important purpose ?transporting creatine into the cell against a concentration gradient!

What this means, is that we actually have so much creatine already inside our muscles, that it takes the transporter to force more in. This is analogous to stuffing 1000 people into a phone booth, and then opening the door for another person to enter -ain?t gonna happen! So despite having an “open door”, there?s no real room for the creatine to enter the cell (13).

Regarding flatulence, I can attest that Dave was single-handedly responsible for almost having our flight back from Staley’s Las Vegas Bootcamp make an emergency landing because the flight attendant thought a terrorist had set off a poison gas bomb.

Only after Dave convinced them that the problem was actually due to his overconsumption of sugar alcohols found in the free protein bars that he had gotten at the Olympia expo, did they agree to continue the flight.

So, what you’re saying is that they almost BARRed the flight?

Here’s a little more coverage of CEE: http://www.t-nation.com/readTopic.do?id=754615&pageNo=0#756413

Although I’m preaching to the choir here, this is a good little reminder to know what you’re taking: http://www.t-nation.com/readTopic.do?id=756158&pageNo=0#756756

Easy now, you’re stuck in that room with me all day too!

Thanks for another good week! Time for delts/arms (I love me the Hammer Strength Shoulder Press).

Cheers

Where can I get some chalk in kitch/loo… the guys at the PAC just looked at me funny when I asked =(

Glad you remember me :). I was wondering if you would or not.

But the plan of the workout is basicly to blast my hips and hamstrings to get them up to snuff. The 4 days a week wasn’t to big of a dela, but I guess if I can go 3 days, then I can atleast use one dedicated day like a Tuesday or something for upperbody.

Also how do I do the reverse hyper with one leg :stuck_out_tongue: That looks like it’ll be hard as crap to do. But if its doable I’ll definately give it a try. Do you recommend anything specific that could help me gain some size in my chest and back? If you have any different type of tricep excercise I could use something like that to? Also do you know anyplace to find a nice dip belt from I was thinking of doing those, but I need a belt because I’m to strong for my body weight ATM?

You suggested core work, do you recommend I switch something or just keep things focused the way they are?

I’ll check with the powerlifting club at Popeye’s. I doubt there’d be any place to buy it in town. :stuck_out_tongue:
