Why do you keep referring to me in the nth person? I address you when I’m talking to you.EDIT: I do hereby at least partially take this back as Professor X did address me by name in another thread I didn’t see before making this post
This is not what I was doing. Not the way you’re making it sound.
I will say that I misspoke when I said you were the ONE who was keeping racism alive in these forums as if it were all your doing.
When I said in essence the tension and frequency with which race was addressed increased by a lot when you started hanging in here again I should have stuck with phrasing it that way.
You take that as an attack. It’s not an attack. It’s an observation and one I don’t relate with any joy. The animosity is all yours. I have none for you whatsoever despite the fact the attitudes you hold toward race are guaranteed to keep people at each other’s throats forever in this country. Not just you and not just the black guys before you jump to that conclusion, but you are raw and bristling my friend.
You put the worst possible construction on whatever anybody says that challenges your beliefs. Like right this second as you read this. Instead of taking what I’m saying as somebody who’s looked up to you here and wants to have the highest opinion of you possible I’ll just be another white guy who finally showed his true colors and once again demonstrated how bigoted we are.
I believe I could disabuse you of this notion if we knew each other in real life which was the intention of my PM you never answered. The first one of mine you didn’t. That hard hearted resentment will not serve you well as the years go by Doc. I promise.

The Obama’s are a proud family. One that has had to struggle harder than most to gain the accomphishments they have. They are proud to be of African heritage. They stand up tall and speak their minds so you will know who and what they are. They are not trying to be white. They are struggling to be equal.
To be equal one must stand on their own feet. They must first know who and what they are. Second they must let everyone else know who and what they are.
One can not successfully run a country without the strength of character required to be the person you are. Yet when a Black person expresses who they are they are viewed as being racist against others.
1st off get one thing straight Obama is not black, or more the point African, yes his father worked for the Kenyan Govt. and he lived there for a min or two before being rushed off to Hawaii to live with his White Grand parents. His Father is 7/8 Arab and 1/8 African negro according to his birth certificate. so doing the math with Moms being 100% white and dad 1/8 “black” and 7/8 Arabic Obama would be 1/2 White, 7/16 Arab and 1/16 “Black” Calling Obama black is like calling a lemon an orange because it’s part citrus. At only 1/16 blood most native American Indian tribes won’t let you claim to be a member.
Jesus. I’m rapidly reaching my stupid post quota for the day. I’m gonna have to log off soon if shit keeps up this way. In case anyone who cares about the facts is wondering: this kid is completely wrong. 100% No truth to this whatsoever, nothing to see here, move along.

Well, as Shelby Steele observes, the country is obsessed with race:

I’ve been reading Shelby Steele for 20 years and that’s the first time I’ve seen him speak. He is as right now as he was in the 1980s. I like what he has to say.

The word you guys have been frantically avoiding for the past few posts is: plurality. You’ve desperately needed it and noone is using it. Please do. It will make this discussion much clearer. Plurality Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster
To clarify: phil is right, whites are a minority (less than 50%); but the rest of you are right in indicating that they are a larger group than any of the others. Hence, whites constitute a plurality in the populations of the cities previously indicated.

But my argument was never whether or not whites constitute the “largest ethnic group” in American cities. I simply said the majority of white people in America don’t live in cities. So far no one has shown me any data to the contrary.

Wow, this is pointless with you. I never claimed you said that. Why would I “hold my breath” trying to show you something I didn’t claim?
You brought up white’s lost racial identity was a partially a result of integrated schools. I’m trying to understand how that ties in with anything. Enlighten me, please.

Ah but you did put words in my mouth and insult the intelligence of people who post here. Putting words into my mouth and looking down on people are two things that I don’t like.

The whites who supported segregation viewed themselves as a racial group. How many whites in post 1960, post segregation America still view themselves in this manner? What used to be pretty mainstream is now very fringe.
This is not the only reason either (the whole topic is very complex…); I would say that the triumph of individualism and the fact that churches now teach that racism or even racialism is bad also had a lot to do with it also.

Just because the Native American Indian community may not accept someone with a convoluted heritage doesn’t mean that the black community won’t . They are a different group with their own history and traditions and while some of their experiences may be similar, their history is not equal. Why should the black community have the same standards for accepting one as their own as the Native American Indian community?
Even if the percentages are correct and Obama is only 1/16 “true” black African heritage, his experience as an American has been 100% as a black man. He has spent his entire life living as and being categorized by our society as a black man. If the black community accepts him and if his entire life experience has been as that of a black man, why would I acknowledge him as anything else.

Intelligent and lovely. Great post Christine. And to reiterate: Obama is biracial, that is half white and half black. He’s isn’t an Arab, so get over it.

Shit, I guess I’m not black either. Who knew?
Most of the “black” people in this country are mixed with several other nationalities and have been for a very long time. It is funny that all of a sudden we are worried about what ‘percentage’ people are. I wonder what brought that on?[/quote]
This kills me. Now that the guy is president elect he’s biracial. But if he was in the hood just be a… well… you know.

I was just trying to clarify the terms being used, because it seemed like people were arguing past each other. I had nothing to do with that argument.
Now that you point it out I see the confusion was more profound than I’d imagined. I was confused myself on what the topic of discussion was.
So you were saying that the majority of whites don’t live in cities… this is different from whites being a majority of a particular city’s population. But you yourself confused the issue by introducing statistics that showed the racial compositions of US cities. What you want is data on where the US population is located (rural, urban, suburban), sorted by race.

LOL! And you haven’t shown any proof of whites leaving all major cities and now making up a minority group of the people who still live in those cities. YOU are the one who made the claim to start with so the burden of proof is on no one but yourself.
When do we get those stats?

Without an accurate definition of what you mean by ‘cities’,it’s impossible to continue the discussion either way.Do you mean live in urban areas?Inner cities? The largest 100 cities?
Clarity is required.

You’re right about that.
To me when I think of cities, I think of places like New York City proper for example and not it’s suburbs. Where I grew up you had the city and the suburbs. Everyone knew which one was which. If you were to say for example that you were from any suburb and claim it as part of the city, people would usually tell you that you were full of shit.
Take a look for example at this article about the demographics of Detroit: the city is majority ~82% black and the suburbs are largely white:
After digging through my posts, I believe that my original quote was:
“The numbers of whites in America who live in cities is much smaller than ones who don’t…”
