I literally said, âthe GOP is far from invincibleâ, meaning they arenât invincible. To say it differently Iâm arguing the GOP isnât invincible no matter who they put up. Romney would be better than Cruz in this hypothetical argument, but that is not the reality of where we are at today.
You disagree? The GOP is invincible with Cruz at the helm?
And that is why Romney and McCain lost. It was not so much their moderate position, but who they were running against. Obama out campaigned them and had more charisma end of storyâŠ
One of the reasons Dole lost to Bill Clinton was Ross Perot siphoned Dole votes. Not as many as the 19% he took when Clinton beat Bush in 92, but enough. And of course lets not forget that Bill Clinton (along with Ronald Reagan) is one of the most gifted politicians of our time.
Point beingâDole did not lose because he was overly moderate.
Donât get me wrong Iâm not at all against a real conservative running for President. In fact, I rather like the idea. But mostly it has to do with looks, personality and political charisma. Unfortunately, Cruz is pretty light in those areas. The good news is if he can capture the nomination and Hillary survives the FBI investigation he is going up against someone who is as bad or perhaps worse than he is regarding those qualities. Add to that Hillaryâs untrustworthiness and her political tone deafness and⊠we will have a President Cruz. Especially if Kasich is his VP pick.
Even the left wing media will not be able to save her.
Compared to Cruz I am a liberal on the social issues, but I am confident that he will follow the Constitution and not impose his views as law unto others. (as the above linked videos imply)
And as I said before, Cruz had me at âabolish the IRSâ. If I could someday file my taxes on a postcard, I would die happyâŠ
This 3rd person being nominated by the establishment is a pipe dream. I am NeverTrump but I respect his survival instincts, and Cruz is hated because he has been using his colleagues as chess pieces on his board from the get go. What makes anyone believe that The Establishment can outfox (heh) Trump and Cruz BOTH???
Cruz stands for âconstitutional principlesâ to appeal to Tea Party types in this election. Was he a âconstitutional conservativeâ when he was climbing in the Bush administration? As a Republican insider? As someone who wanted change while serving as director at the office of planning at the FTC (more market based solutions, per the establishmentâs playbook) but not someone who wanted to burn it down (âwhy is the federal government regulating trade in the first place?â asks the true constitutional conservative).
And if the answer is, âwell, he has to work within the system and had to minor reforms firstâ, isnât that exactly what âconstitutional conservativesâ have said is disqualifying in this election - the incremental compromisers need to go home and let the true conservatives come lay waste and take no prisoners?
No one seems to be able to square this circle with Cruz. Hmmm.
Heâs right-wing, sure, thereâs no doubt. But his supporters - the new Obamabots - see him how they want to see him, rather than what he is.
I didnât say Cruz changed solely for this election - I just noted he was using it now. Heâs clearly been selling âconstitutional conservatismâ since his campaign for the Senate.
So what do you have to say about his tenure in the Bush administration, which you didnât address? He certainly didnât appear to be a âconstitutional conservativeâ during that part of his political career, agreed?
Alan Dershowitz just on Megyn Kellyâs show saying Ted Cruz was one of the smartest students heâs ever had, challenged every one of Dershowitzâs legal views, basically played the devilâs advocate to Dershowitzâs views so well that Dershowitz never had to present them himself. Apparently Dershowitz gets some crap from his lefty buddies about telling the world how smart Cruz was/is.
Elizabeth Warren was also one of Dershowitzâs students, and there was just a little bit of hint, hint stuff there between Kelly and Dershowitz, since Warrenâs name was brought up and Dershowitz did not say anything in response to Kelly, hint hintâŠ
More Dershowitz: âclear, principled, unwaveringâ were the words he used about Cruzâs views, fyi for those who think Cruz is just campaigning with his adherence to the Constitution positions.
(just wiki-ed Warren, didnât mention she was a student of Dershowitz, but Kelly did a mumbly kind of hint hint thing so I canây say for sure what Kelly said wrt Warren)
Yes, Cruz penned an article in defense of the Tenth Amendment and cited Madisonâs famous âIf men were angelsâ quote, which I remarked was odd, since Madisonâs point was that we needed stronger, not weaker, government.
But sure, Cruz has been touting âconstitutional conservativismâ for some time, I donât say otherwise. What I am pointing out is that is that he was not always committed to that, but that he is clearly getting a pass on it.
