President of the US Picks

I literally said, “the GOP is far from invincible”, meaning they aren’t invincible. To say it differently I’m arguing the GOP isn’t invincible no matter who they put up. Romney would be better than Cruz in this hypothetical argument, but that is not the reality of where we are at today.

You disagree? The GOP is invincible with Cruz at the helm?

I think I can safely say that the best most qualified candidate is not running in this election cycle. We have to pick from bottom feeders

And that is why Romney and McCain lost. It was not so much their moderate position, but who they were running against. Obama out campaigned them and had more charisma end of story

One of the reasons Dole lost to Bill Clinton was Ross Perot siphoned Dole votes. Not as many as the 19% he took when Clinton beat Bush in 92, but enough. And of course lets not forget that Bill Clinton (along with Ronald Reagan) is one of the most gifted politicians of our time.

Point being—Dole did not lose because he was overly moderate.

Don’t get me wrong I’m not at all against a real conservative running for President. In fact, I rather like the idea. But mostly it has to do with looks, personality and political charisma. Unfortunately, Cruz is pretty light in those areas. The good news is if he can capture the nomination and Hillary survives the FBI investigation he is going up against someone who is as bad or perhaps worse than he is regarding those qualities. Add to that Hillary’s untrustworthiness and her political tone deafness and
we will have a President Cruz. Especially if Kasich is his VP pick.

Even the left wing media will not be able to save her.

Well, this thread went off topic fast

Compared to Cruz I am a liberal on the social issues, but I am confident that he will follow the Constitution and not impose his views as law unto others. (as the above linked videos imply)

And as I said before, Cruz had me at “abolish the IRS”. If I could someday file my taxes on a postcard, I would die happy

This 3rd person being nominated by the establishment is a pipe dream. I am NeverTrump but I respect his survival instincts, and Cruz is hated because he has been using his colleagues as chess pieces on his board from the get go. What makes anyone believe that The Establishment can outfox (heh) Trump and Cruz BOTH???

Never gonna happen

YEAH BABY!

But
will be very difficult to pull off

Cruz stands for “constitutional principles” to appeal to Tea Party types in this election. Was he a “constitutional conservative” when he was climbing in the Bush administration? As a Republican insider? As someone who wanted change while serving as director at the office of planning at the FTC (more market based solutions, per the establishment’s playbook) but not someone who wanted to burn it down (“why is the federal government regulating trade in the first place?” asks the true constitutional conservative).

And if the answer is, “well, he has to work within the system and had to minor reforms first”, isn’t that exactly what “constitutional conservatives” have said is disqualifying in this election - the incremental compromisers need to go home and let the true conservatives come lay waste and take no prisoners?

No one seems to be able to square this circle with Cruz. Hmmm.

He’s right-wing, sure, there’s no doubt. But his supporters - the new Obamabots - see him how they want to see him, rather than what he is.

Which of the five remaining candidates most respects the U.S constitution?

I didn’t say Cruz changed solely for this election - I just noted he was using it now. He’s clearly been selling “constitutional conservatism” since his campaign for the Senate.

So what do you have to say about his tenure in the Bush administration, which you didn’t address? He certainly didn’t appear to be a “constitutional conservative” during that part of his political career, agreed?

Alan Dershowitz just on Megyn Kelly’s show saying Ted Cruz was one of the smartest students he’s ever had, challenged every one of Dershowitz’s legal views, basically played the devil’s advocate to Dershowitz’s views so well that Dershowitz never had to present them himself. Apparently Dershowitz gets some crap from his lefty buddies about telling the world how smart Cruz was/is.

Elizabeth Warren was also one of Dershowitz’s students, and there was just a little bit of hint, hint stuff there between Kelly and Dershowitz, since Warren’s name was brought up and Dershowitz did not say anything in response to Kelly, hint hint

More Dershowitz: “clear, principled, unwavering” were the words he used about Cruz’s views, fyi for those who think Cruz is just campaigning with his adherence to the Constitution positions.

(just wiki-ed Warren, didn’t mention she was a student of Dershowitz, but Kelly did a mumbly kind of hint hint thing so I can’y say for sure what Kelly said wrt Warren)

Yes, Cruz penned an article in defense of the Tenth Amendment and cited Madison’s famous “If men were angels” quote, which I remarked was odd, since Madison’s point was that we needed stronger, not weaker, government.

But sure, Cruz has been touting “constitutional conservativism” for some time, I don’t say otherwise. What I am pointing out is that is that he was not always committed to that, but that he is clearly getting a pass on it.

I’ll have to look it up later, but didn’t Cruz petition the Supreme Court to repeal most of GWB’s medicare drug plan?
