Nards did you really write “Balls and music bid him to run mad.”??
theuofh: is it a short cut though or a different method? There are tons of cultures who guided themselves based off what shamans or the like saw during “trips.” I think people use it now incorrectly compared to history (like almost everything else) but its a tool no?
I have used Lucid Dreaming, OBE and others as a form of meditation. Very, very interesting.[/quote]
If anyone here has any real interest in meditation, I suggest you read “A Fighter’s Heart” by Sam Sheridan. Whole chapter on it that is truly interesting.

Hey Irish, I actually have Fighter’s Mind which is the second book IIRC. Will check out “Heart”. Keen to read it from a different perspective.
Maybe I’m taking you guys too seriously, but is this for real? Someone earlier mentioned the ‘dogma’ of meditation, so are we talking about universe energy and planet chakras, etc as fun metaphors or is this a true belief? When I think of dogmatism I think of Nietzsche and Kant and Narcissist philosophy, but this is way beyond my definition of dogmatic belief. If so, is there anything approaching a rational and logic-fully-applied argument for these things?
Also, you guys need to get real about drugs being a conduit for enlightenment. Drugs have well studied and highly predictable effects on one’s brain chemistry. That is all. Sure, pretty much every time I take LSD I am positive that what I am experiencing is time travel, but then I sober up. Don’t even start on me with relative reality nonsense, you do not exist in a vacuum, neither do your actions, your reality, or your brain for the matter. This is Coast to Coast stuff guys, c’mon…
That being said, I do think plain jane sitting down, getting comfortable, taking deep breathes, practicing any other mundane relaxation techniques like massage- can positively influence ones well being by lowering blood pressure, cortisol levels, and most other symptoms of stress. I believe this because it has been scientifically (that science part is pretty important) studied by intelligent people with advanced education and found to be true.

I read that too. Great book also.
A Fighter’s Heart, though, is my favorite by a hair. There’s just so much great stuff in there, and the chapter on meditation is another interesting facet… kinda like how the chess one was in a fighter’s mind.

I don’t get into the new age stuff either. But there is something to say about just clearing your mind. Learning how to stop incessant thinking is actually pretty hard to do, but it can be done with practice. That practice really is the definition of meditation.
