Potatoes, Crop of the Zombiecalypse
orion wrote:
First, I realize that nobody has waited for this thread but that is only because you are entirely unprepared for the zombiecalypse and will be wiped out anyway.

So, here is the reasoning:

First wheat, rye and corn need to be prepared to be able to be consumed. Given the limited resources available after the complete breakdown of society thats bad.

Then, one hectar of potatoes yields around 15-20 tons of potatoes which is probably half fuckload in the imperial system.

The killer argument though is that wheat and corn grows pretty high, in a corn field a whole flock of zombies could sneak up on you and tear you apart and you would not even see them coming.

Not so with wheat, but crawlers would still be a problem.

Potatoes on the other hand dont grow to far out of the ground, nothing could sneak up on you, so they are perfect for a zombie safe harvest.

Perfectly unrelated:

In Land of the Dead, Dennis Hopper kills someone to flee with FIVE MILLION DOLLARS !!11!!

To go where?

To buy what?

I agree with the potatoes being a good crop, they can also be grown in containers, roof top garden! Even just a pile of dirt would do as long as you had more to throw on top as they grew.

Protien? Chickens, for the eggs mostly. And that’s not the deviled eggs talking.

Yeah the money thing in Land was silly. But you could tell that Romero’s Land was about the zombies and not the humans this time. His typical black man/white woman combo was among the zombies not the humans this time.

Diary of the Dead was good.

Not to mention using a potato box. It can yield over 100lbs per yard.

Hell yes! Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.

Hey Bro!
We used to eat these when we were kids.

pfft potatos.
Carrots, that’s the crop to grow.
Low to the ground, more anabolic.
Plus they make your eyesight good, and Bugs Bunny was pretty smart so there’s that to consider.
Too much Vitamin A is toxic, therefore carrots would not work as a major source of calories.

I like this Potato idea. The Irish survived on Potatoes and nothing else (cept wiskey perhaps) for generations. Plant multiple speices in seperate plots and you shouldn’t have to fret too much about the blight.

Don’t forget you can always make Vodka out of the excess potatoes too.

I am the only one who doesn’t get the humour in this whole “Zombie Apocalypse” thing? As well as the “Forever Alone” meme?

I think I’m getting old. Back to my Werther’s Originals and Gold Bond powder…

Unfortunately, I was completely sober.

When I am high I get really weird.

I’m not high and I thought the whole potato thing was logical.

There is a little village in Austria that you can only reach with a cable car.

That would obviously be ideal, but it is unlikely that you could get their in time.

If Zombies freeze in the winter, you may want to live somewhere with actual seasons, if they however rot, hot and humid would be great.

Since we have a lot of old castles I will probably just whole up in one of those, with lots and lots of potato boxes.

High walls and a moat sounds awesome to me.

Yeah I would think they would freeze in winter, how can they not? The other problem is the whole original “Dawn of the Dead” problem, other people who want to take what you have.

Oh and beans(legumes) can be grown in containers too and can be dried and stored. Protein + carbs. They would really work where I live because they like lots of water and it rains a lot here.

No castles here but an apartment building with the stairs to the second floor demolished could work.(Zombie Survival Guide)

The question is, do you dig in and plant or roam around scavenging? Would there be a need to plant anything in the beginning? If most people are turned wouldn’t there be lots of canned stuff around?

Everyone should read World War Z, as well as the Zombie Survival Guide, by Max Brooks.

Islands are out, unless surrounded by cliffs on all sides. Zombies don’t breathe, and can lurch his way all across the ocean to get at you.

Zed will freeze, but that’s temporary. Once spring rolls around you’re right back to the infestation problem.

An apartment on the second or higher floor would be good. Tear out the wall between yours and the next one so you have plenty of room to move and for storage. Then get a rope ladder or some other means of retractable egress/ingress.

Weapons of course: The crowbar is by far the most useful tool to have. You can use it to pry your way into places, to bash Zed’s head, and more. A pistol with good stopping power like a .45, and an assault rifle for distance work.

Both are really good books. I know people that take them WAY too seriously though. It’s kind of scary.

I’ve read Zombie Survival Guide.
They will be releasing World War Z in 2012

No clip in the link though, not sure if there are any out there.

I’m with you. The zombie thing isn’t funny or cool to me…I also don’t like the internet always talking about bacon all the time either. If you know what I mean.
It’s just that I’ve never seen so much talk about bacon like it’s been the last 4 or 5 years.

Every google image has contained something bacon, no matter what I am googling.
Pic is a bacon dipped donut.

Yeah, that’s what I mean.
