Plant-Based Omega 3 Alert

heard a very important fact on the radio yesterday (radio 4 for the t-men/women in the UK). the basic gist was that omega 3 is important (duh), omega 6 and 9 arent very (duh again).

food companies are now putting ‘high/source of in omega 3’ labels on stuff like margerine and bread. this omega 3 source is minute - below 100mg - and is from the LONG CHAINED omega 3 in plant sources - the body finds this very hard to process and the amount is useless.

food companies can do this due to the new EU dietry standards, which were set LOWER than in the UK (who set them at level they deemed the average clued-up person would sensibly be able to get in their diet).

one MAJOR problem is that some supplement companies are now doing this as well, so go check your omega 3 supps NOW.

i appreciate most members of T-Nation might be aware of this, but i thought it important for the new people to know of this, as FISH OIL is awesome - so get your omega 3 from that. bathe in it, seriously.

Good post. Stick to Flameout! =P

Yeah companies have been doing this shit for years here in Norway. You can even buy candy with Omega 3 here…
But no worries. We have a long tradition of high quality fish oil here. They even used to give to the youngest children at school back in the day.

hahaha candy O3. that attitude your country has is cool. on the radio programme they were talking like this massive new and revolutionary research paper had just come out, and my mum turnerd around and said “didnt you tell me this, like, 5 years ago?”

As much of a fan as I am of Fish Oil and quality Omega 3s Ill pass on the bath. That would be one of the few baths you come out of oilier and smellier, along with baths in motor oil, and Rosie O’Donnell.

Good post. Food companies are always trying to con the public into thinking their highly processed shit is actually healthy. You are right fish oil is the best, relatively cheap and provides many health benefits.

I don’t think that the companies are scamming the public at all really, it’s just an unfortunate turn of events for them:

Exec 1: Ok, we should add EPA/DHA from fish to our foods, since our consumers want it so bad

Exec 2: Omfg, these eggs and bread taste like fish!!

Exec 1: Is there another source of Omega-3 at all?

Exec 2: Yeah, but its essentially much less bioavailable since it’s not from fish

Exec 1: And if we don’t put this in the product?

Exec 2: We won’t sell shit since the next company is doing this…

Exec 1: Godammit…

Hate to be cynical, but do you really think this is how they think?
“Ok, whats the cheapest way to do this…”

Yeah, they’re aiming for the profit margins always. But if they can claim that their Omega-3’s are a hell of a lot more bioavailable than the competitions, then they would use a bit more money in hopes of earning a lot more (maybe, it sounds reasonable)

Fishy tasting products that aren’t fish are kind of a turn off though

Lol, how else do you think companies think? They are there to make the most money they can, period. Any other reason they give is just a politically correct answer.

something that always confuses me (slightly), i can never smell fish oil in my tabs, and ‘a smell’ has never been complained about, even by intimates. but then i can never smell eggs and the whoe house complains if i eat 1 boiled egg.

If I’m not mistaken, eggs produced from free-range chickens not on a high corn diet, have naturally elevated levels of Omega-3. Same for free-range beef on a grass diet. So Omega-3 eggs wouldn’t taste fishy anyway. (not sure how you would “add” fish oil to eggs anyway unless you injected them with a syringe)

Not trying to be combative, but the egg example was a bit off. I also don’t think they would actually put fish oil in their products, just the fatty acids. And the source of those, as has been pointed out, is gonna come from the cheapest one.

Edit: This is going on the assumption that the fatty acids are extractable from the fish oil as a whole.

Would the ‘plant-based’ omega3’s to which you’re referring mean ALA? Yep, that’s nearly worthless, unless you’re vegan.
