( i got a little carried away writing this, i was simply sharing my viewpoints , which i get a little passionate about when it involves certain things, nothing personal to anyone, i actually am quite open to those who disagree, hell, maybe theres shit I dont know, but i know a lot of wha tim typing backed up by years of experience with dog training, and lots of research, if anyone wants me to cite any of my information simply ask )
Between my housemates and I, there are six dogs in my household. I own a black lab/saint bernard mix(he looks like a huge lab with white spots, and a pit terrier. One of my other roommates owns a chihuahah, and a saint bernard /lab mix as well(but it looks like a saint bernard). We also foster a pitbull, and one more of my roommates has a border collie. Of all my dogs, the most gentle and relaxed dog I have is the pit mix i own.
She is the sweetest most relaxed dog out of all of them. Well today, after having lived in this house for over a year now, and having had my pit since before we moved into this house, I was informed that I need to buy renters insurance, or move out, or get rid of my dog. Because apparently the owners insurance will not renew their insurance because they found out I have a pit ( which ive never made a secret at all, in any way shape or form, she is always outside when im not home, along with the rest of them, in a properly fenced in back yard ofcourse)
I am aware of all the stigma, and reputation the breed has, but every pit ive ever met in my life has been the most laid back , relaxed dog. Never met a high strung pit. If a dog has aggressive tendencies you can train the dog out of it, if your dog is destructive you take responsibility and ensure that the dog has an outlet to express their anxiety when you are away, the reason a lot of these dogs have a bad rep is because of irresponsible, lazy owners, who do not properly raise their dogs, and teach them what behaviors are acceptable and what is not.
And I believe that pitbulls can be more hardheaded than other dogs, which does make them more difficult to train because people are used to the dogs who like to please, like labs, and border collies, who are more susceptible to your likes and dislikes. I believe these breeds would not be as in as much hot water as they are in if people learned that sometimes its not the dog, every dog you own and raise you have to adopt a new training style for, there is no cookie cutter style to raising dogs, sometimes raising a dog, you have to RETRAIN YOURSELF, and let go of bad habits, it takes a lot of patience, and i believe a lot of people do not have the patience to raise a pitbull properly, and end up either giving up on the dog and leaving it chained up outside away from human interaction(and affection),or becoming abusive with the dog.
And im sure there is the occasional dipshit drug dealer who trains a dog to be mean (which if you seriously think about it is very dumb, pits are very strong dogs, but if someone wants to get into your house, a bullet will stop a dog,as will other assorted weapons that most people have on hand nowadays, so training your dog to attack is futile, especially in todays society where dogs get put down for even the smallest offense).
Every time I turn around I hear how violent pits are, or how dangerous they can be, or how they can turn on you in the drop of a dime, or (insert random shit you heard from so and so), but almost every instance of violence ive heard on the news, or anywhere, the explanation is right in story theyre reporting. There was a news story where a child had been bitten while approaching a mother who was chained up in a carport with a litter of puppies she had just given birth to. First of all, why was this kid allowed to wonder onto someone elses property(1), unsupervised(2), at the age where he didnt have the common sense to A-stay away from dogs you dont know and, B stay the fuck away from any animal and her puppies, and C, if a strange dog, on someone elses property with puppies starts growling at you, OBVIOUSLY as a warning to get the hell away , why would you continue to approach it.
And in this story, I believe the dog, along with her puppies, got confiscated, and euthanized, because they did not want “aggressive dogs” to be able to continue to breed, and or “have the oppurtunity to harm another innocent bystander”. Are you shitting me? Im just ranting a bit here, but if you seriously listen closely to just about every bite case, its shit like that.
There is no dog breed that is inherently dangerous, it is how theyre raised. I mean sure there are dogs who have more testosterone than others who are naturally more aggressive, but guess what? There are plenty of PEOPLE like that, and what we usually do with those people is help them develop skills to handle life in everyday society or an OUTLET to get some of that ENERGY out so it is not built up and waiting to pop.
That is why I lift weights, and wrestle, because I am one of those people, I need an outlet. Dogs need one too, whether is be running, walking, tug of war, fetch, DOG SULKY CARTING, dog weightlifting, anything to get rid of that dogs pent up energy. All Im saying is before you label something dangerous, do some research, look into things for yourself before you mindlessly repeat something you personally dont have any clue about the truth.
This is why rumors, and bad reputations happen. I do not believe in a bad dog breed. And if you want a real interesting fact, guess what, there are more labrador retriever attacks than any of these “dangerous dog breeds”, does that mean labs are “bad” or “dangerous”,NO, it means that the dog probably has some ISSUES that havent been PROPERLY ADDRESSED,and is spending that excessive nervous energy in a NEGATIVE way, or they are not being properly SOCIALIZED, and do not have the social skills YET to be out in society.
There were several cities across the us that BANNED certain dog breeds (what is this the dark ages, thought this was america) and not only banned them,if they didnt get rid of their dog or move to a different city, they went to people house TOOK THEIR FAMILY PETS, regardless of background, against thier owners will, and killed them. There was a city that had killed thousands of dogs within the first few weeks of this law being in place.
What I dont understand is, in today’s supposedly forward thinking society, with all the knowledge and intelligence we have as a human race, do we not have the common sense to realize that genocide of any kind, against anything, is wrong, and senseless? I want to hear thoughts, opinions, stories, likes, dislikes, i just want to discuss this with this community, possibly raise some awareness. I never knew this stuff was going on until this past year when i happened along a few documentaries on netflix, which prompted me to go online and spend many a countless hours seeing if this stuff is actually true.
