Im in the process of buying a Mossberg 500 pistol grip 12 gauge shotgun. Does anyone on T-Nation own one already and how do you like it? Also, which would you prefer, a pistol grip or one with a stock?

Nah… I just whip one of these out and people run from me pretty damn quickly…
he said pistol grip not fistal grip you jackass.
Don’t waste your money. I’d hold out for the phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range.
I have an 835 and prefer the full stock, the pistol grip is tacticool but any more than bird shot is a mother fucker on your hands. Try them both see what you lock.
I recommend you go with an aftermarket Knoxx stock. I have one on my 870, pretty sure they make them for the Mossy as well. Reason being is they have a pretty effective recoil reducing mechanism built in. It really takes a lot of the kick out of the thing. I can literally fire 3" slugs one handed without too much trouble. Pretty nice feature, especially if you have a lady around who might need to use it defensively or for fun.
Note: Just did some googling, looks like they are under the Blackhawk brand now.
If you insist on a pistol grip, get a stock to go along with it. Shooting anything but #8 shot out of a pistol grip only shotgun is going to suck big time. If you ignore this and get a pistol grip only shotgun, please shoot it one handed hollywood style, and post on youtube for the lulz.
I originally got my Winchester 1300 with a pistol grip. The recoil isn’t that bad (and I shot 3" slugs out of it), but it’s not pleasant. The real problem with a pistol grip, though, is that it forces you to trade almost all of your accuracy for a shorter weapon. And if you were doing something that required the lesser overall length of a pistol grip shotgun, you’d probably know enough about what you need to not have to ask about it on T-Nation.
I’ve got a traditional stock on my Defender right now, and I like it a lot. I think I’d like a pistol grip + stock more, though. It just depends on personal preferences. Go to a gun shop and shoulder some different shotguns with different stock styles to see what you like.
If you don’t mind spending a little extra money, I’d say buy it with the pistol grip and then go out and buy a full stock (pistol grip + stock or traditional) to put on it later. The pistol grip shotgun is basically pointless, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun. You might end up liking it just for plinking. If buying both isn’t an option, though, I’d definitely suggest getting a full stock from the get-go, because if you ever actually need the weapon, you’ll be MUCH better off with a full stock.
Pistol grip shotguns are not very accurate and are difficult to shoot well. A full stock with a pistol grip like a Knoxx is great to shoot. If I had to choose I’d go with a full stock over a pistol grip anyday.
The Remington 870 with the (full) pistol grip stock is one of my favorite weapons. Inexpensive, reliable, and with the right load relatively little risk of overpenetration when used indoors.
A pistol grip only stock, otoh, is great only as long as you don’t intend to actually fire the damn thing.

nice reference.
OP, i used to have that shotgun exactly…its really fun to shoot, but not as accurate as the stock. for home defense, you could wield it in tight quarters (i suppose) when zombies try to get you, but again, your accuracy will go down.
and it also “pivots” differently when you shoot it. it pivots from the hand (hard to explain, i guess) instead of the shoulder. my friend shot it for the first time, and the end of the barrel hit him in the lip, since he was used to firing one with a stock. no youtube lulz since this was 10 years ago…
i’d go with a stock, and then just pistol-grip the forearm…and then upgrade it to at least 40 watts…maybe 50
and make sure you fucking duct tape a maglite on the barrel…zombies come at night
