These are both Remington 870 Police Magnums, made in either the late 80’s or early 90’s when Remington’s production standards were at their highest. They cost me between $250 and $300 each. The one on top functioned perfectly when I got it, I added a +3 magazine extension made by S&J harware and XS big dot sights. I put in new followers and a few new springs just for piece of mind. The velcro side saddles are both Vang Comp shell cards, which are the best quality you can buy.
The one on the bottom needed a new fore-end tube as the action bars on the original were slightly torqued and caused the action to hesitate every now and then. I also added the Magpul stock and Hogue Fore end.

Man, does anything beat an 870 for home defense? Fucking love that gun to death. Basically all you’d ever need, perhaps minus the comfort and confidence in wielding a lot of power in a non-handgun format for less experienced shooters.
Otherwise any hollow point load in 9mm or .45 ACP will be an ideal defense round. Your perpetrator probably won’t feel the difference between several shots from either of those rounds, I just prefer 9mm over the latter due to larger capacity and control.
Does anyone here have any experience with Uzis? If so, how would you describe ease of use and maintenance, accuracy, and reliability? I assume they are fine weapons or else would not be used by the Israel Defense Forces, but I’m curious about personal experiences. Of course, as a civilian, I am looking at a semi-auto model, so experience with firing in that mode is what I’m interested in.
Thanks
For context, since the thread was moved, he was talking about the Uzi. I can see absolutely no reason to get a semi-auto Uzi. The auto models have a crazy rate of fire, and even those I wouldn’t look at, because controlling anything after the first few rounds would be impossible and highly dangerous in most civilian circumstances. But if you’re not getting it for it’s 600 RPM rate of fire, I can honestly not see any reason why you’d get a semi auto Uzi over a good handgun.
Also, I worked very briefly with a couple IDF guys, and as far as I can tell, Uzis were mostly phased out a long time ago (in the '80s), and then completely in 2003. Uzis are just easy to manufacture, but unless someone steps in to defend the semi auto Uzi, I’m going to say, hard no.
I would say no, they seem very impractical. Right now, and probably through the election, it is very hard to get reasonably priced ammo. And you need a lot of ammo.
I think it was Col. Jeff Cooper who said owning a gun doesn’t make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician. So, you need to practice to be competent, safe, and proficient enough to be able to defend your home.
.38 special, 9mm or anything bigger would be adequate. Right now, being able to get ammo for it should play a big part in your decision.

Uzis haven’t been widely used by the IDF for years.
My eldest four daughters were issued Tavors which is a fantastic bull pup. Arguably the best.
Home defense is 12g shotgun, .357 pistol or a quality semi of your choice and caliber and, if you live somewhere where ANTIFA might knock your door down a rifle. Probably an AR but a Tavor or even an AK works. Depends on your budget.
UZIS generally shoot pistol rounds, do jam, and are just not that useful unless you are a professional security type with Hugh risk clients. And they’d probably get something nore modern.
Uzi’s are mostly 9mm. You wouldn’t need a crazy amount for a semi auto Uzi anyway. It’s more like if somebody offered me a brand new semi-auto M249. Why the fuck wouldn’t I just get an M4? If you anticipate yourself fighting off a squad doing a dynamic entry on your house, a fully automatic Uzi might not be a bad idea, but if you’re looking for easily manufactured, durable, and low-maintenance coupled with decent accuracy, and semi-auto capability, just go get a glock 17 gen4 and stop overthinking it.
A person with no training and no experience definitely needs a lot of ammo, to practice and hopefully, eventually become proficient. One or two boxes of target ammo isn’t go to do it.
I don’t mean that they need a belt fed machine gun or something to hose down the neighborhood. That is a horrible idea.
Also, Glock 17 is a good choice, but 9mm is going to be hard to find for the rest of 2020. A Glock 22, or 21 might be a better choice these days.
No - I just mean a semi auto Uzi isn’t going to put out much more than anything else - yes, it has a 25 round capacity, but I’m not going to fire THAT many more rounds than my Glock 17, that has a 17+1 round capacity. I totally understand the reasoning behind lots of rounds down range. It’s the only way to reinforce proper technique, and make sure that your muscle memory doesn’t fuck you when everything goes to shit. I just meant you wouldn’t need more ammo for an Uzi than you would a G17, and it’s the same type of ammo. Basically, the ammo is the least negative part for me - it’s everything else that doesn’t make any sense.
