I have recently started to increase my Photoshop skills with a beginners tutorial book fortified by as many video tutorials as I can handle. I do enjoy it and actually plan to start freelancing a little bit.
I have two simple things to ask…
My dilemma stems from the fact that I am not a photographer and I do not feel comfortable constructing a portfolio with images that do not belong to me, but Adobe removed the stock photos from Bridge! So how in the heck can I find stock images that are legal for me to use?
As an aside, I have not started to use Illustrator yet because I have my hands full with Photoshop, and I’m guessing that Illustrator is how most people create completely original content. Other than purchasing a camera is illustrator my only option?
I want you to tell me about your experience with Photoshop. How do you use it, how did you get into it, etc… I would also take any advice I can get on the matter. It sounds strange because I am sure people don’t usually want to know stuff about you, but in this case I am trying to construct a mental image of what this program is to other people.
So please, rant, rave, whatever… Spill the beans.
The pic is a simple stencil I did in about 5 minutes after a lesson on curves, levels and the like. I’m sort of wondering how it will show up on a black message board though.
I got into photoshop because I used to hang around other forums and they had signatures. I just really liked making epic signatures with beams and abstract shit sparking everywhere.

I call Swayze on the 2nd one.

That makes me feel somewhat better. The first stencil is indeed Ricky from TPB and it was easier because of the contrast. I did the second one, which is Swayze, for someone else and I just used the photo that they wanted. I wouldn’t have chosen it and I was a little worried that he wouldn’t be recognizable.

Nice. I got into it just for fun too, but when I realized how much of a demand for it there is on the job market I decided to start reading some books. If you are skilled with Adobe and how some exposure with programming languages you’re money.
don’t know what your budget is or what you intentions of using photoshop is, but there are plenty of websites where you can buy photos, again depends on budget/what you are designing for… http://www.shutterpoint.com/
if you are doing freelance type work, I would just invest in a camera, you can get a pretty decent camera these days for around $200, I bought a 7 megapixel camera at best buy for somewhere in that ball park
A few years ago in college I worked as a marketing assistant for my on campus rec center. It was a very graphic design based job that got me exposed to adobe creative suite, photography, and a little video editing. I am no photoshop master but I put out some good pieces of marketing material I was extremely proud of. Every once in a while I will do a little freelance for people here and there.

Ditto.
The best thing you can do is just fuck around with photoshop yourself and also try out a couple of tutorials. Though if you’re planning on school you’ll need a traditional art portfolio.
