Phlegms' Beginner Log

Good PRs & great progress on the front squats, it seems like a lot of us are on a lil’ mission to force our front squats into something beastly

that is amazing! I didnt know you were such an outdoorsy bad ass?
Yeah I’ve kinda grown up doing stuff like this. I was in the scouts as a kid and I’ve just kind of kept up hiking/climbing and general bad-assery as I’ve gotten older. Generally try to shoot for at least a couple of weeks under canvas a year, it definitely keeps me sane!

My front squat max is getting depressingly close to my back squat max…fml.

Don’t worry, even if your back squat isn’t that far ahead of your front… all you have to do is get your fronties to 3 plates and your back will be over 3 plates for reps EASY MODE!

Did about 2 hours of technique work today on my snatch and jerk. No numbers worth mentioning as today wasn’t about the weight. Got about 30 minutes with my coach and he made some adjustments to my snatch that have cleaned it up significantly. He said my clean is looking very strong with very few adjustments to be made but my jerk technique is lacking behind it so I will be big time focusing on my jerk tech in the coming months (hence the hundreds of rack jerks I did today!).

My snatch is coming along nicely I think, I just need to focus on really sitting back into position at the start of the movement and getting on my toes more at the shrug/pull part rather than leaving the floor completely. Incredibly tired right now, gonna eat up, sleep up and fit an early lifting session in tomorrow morning!

Awesome front squat man, keep killing it.

September 8th:

A. Power Snatch (No Dip):
Barx10 x2

B. Back Squats:
Barx10
60kgx5
80kgx5
100kgx5 x2
110kgx3 (Definite Form Pr!)

C. Snatch Pulls:
Barx10 x2
50kgx6 x2
70kgx5 x2

D. Overhead Squats:
Barx10 x2

40kgx5
50kgx5 (Pr-felt like death during this set…)

E. Close Grip Bench:
Barx10
60kgx8
65kgx8 (+2Pr E-Z MONIES)
70kgx7 (Pr: Felt so eassssy, would of gone for 8 but no spottah!)

F. Incline Crunches:
3 sets to failure

F. Hammer Curls /super set/ cable curls:
4 sets, minimal wrist pain. First time I could properly work arms in a few weeks!

Notes:
Holy fucking volume batman! This was a very tough workout. No major progress on the back squats, form felt so much better on my top set though. Didn’t have it in me to go for a new PR in weight as I was sneakily trying to squat barefoot but got stopped… I still cant backsquat in my Oly shoes… Everything else was solid, Close grip bench felt stupid light. SOLID day all round!

Good training man, impressive progress in the CGBP. Keep it up

Quick chest pump session and tech work today:

A. Incline Smith Bench:
5 sets, ramped up to a heavy triple-Pause at bottom and SQUEEEZZEE at the top

B. Incline DB Flies/super set/push ups
4 sets-chest death

C. Machine Chest press:
3 sets, high reps, chasin’ dat pump!

D. Rack Jerks
40 minutes worth of singles

Notes:
OH GOD THE PUMP. Crazy chest pump, it felt awesome. My jerk technique still sucks but its getting there, I just really need to get my shoulder strength up.

I like that chest workout. I’m a big fan of incline work… a built upper chest is what separates the men from the boys

good stuff

It was def inspired by you, I went into the gym this morning thinking “what would greggers do?” and there stood the smith machine gleaming in the morning light!

I really do like the smith for incline work after today as I find I can go for a much better muscle contraction with my reps that I just can’t do with a barbell. This works well with incline benching as I incline bench more for hypertrophy than strength like with the flat bench.

September 10th:

A. Power Cleans (No dip):
50kgx5
60kgx5
70kgx5
80kgx3
90kgx2 (Pr)

B. Push Press:
50kgx5
70kgx4x2 (Accidental Pr)
75kgx3 (Again, accidental PR)
80kgx1 (PR!)

C. Front Squats:
Barx10x2
60kgx5
90kgx5 (easyyyy)
100kgx1 (So e-z)
105kg xfail
60kgx20 (Punishment for the fail, Pr?)

D. Chest Supported tbar rows:
1plate x20
2plate x10
3platex6

E. Incline Weighted Crunches:
4 sets

F. Behind the Neck lat pull downs:
4 sets, doing these to help my end of Snatch position

G. Pistol Squats:
Hadn’t done these in a while, did 3 sets of 5 on each leg. These are fun!

Notes:
Mixed session. On the one hand, I hit nice clean PRs and push press PRs. On the other, I failed on a 105kg front squat attempt. I was really gutted with this as the previous sets felt so easy, oh well. Next week I’ll smash it. Hit accidental PRs on the push press. Basically I miscounted, so the 70kg set I put up I though was only 60kg. I was getting pissed off at the time as I couldn’t figure out why my warm up weight felt so heavy, I felt like such a douche after I realised… Gonna rest up tomorrow and then maybe hit some technique on monday.

Went to try buy new jeans today, couldn’t fit my quads in my usual size. I think this means that all the skwattzzz have been working somewhat…

12th September:

A. Power Snatch:
Barx5 x2
30kgx5
40kgx5
45kgx5
50kgx3
55kgx3
60kgx3 (Pr!)

B. Drop Snatch:
Barx10 x2
30kgx5
40kgx5 x2
50kgx1

C. Close Grip Bench:
60kgx5
65kgx5
70kgx5
75kgx5 (Pr- e z money!)

D. Pistol Squats:
5@BW (Per leg)
8@BW
6 +2.5kg
5 +5kg

E. Leg Raises:
3 sets x15 reps

Notes:
Good session, power snatch PR was decent. Form wasn’t perfect though, my power snatching always feels a little sluggish. CGBP felt stupid easy, up 5kg from last week! Threw in pistol squats again as I need to work on both balance and unilateral leg strength to improve my snatching, pistol squats fill that void nicely!

Geez, you sure are making progress on the oly lifts.

awesome!!! Its always nice (kinda) when clothes start getting tighter in the right places (not the belt line lol)

It means you’re doing something right! keep it going man

5kg in one week on CGBP? Die plz. haha.

Good progress man, keep doing work, I know you will.
AquaCruzer wrote:

Thanks! Once you get the technique right (especially with the snatch) the weights really fly up
