Oh dear God No! Phil Collins is a sort of ok drummer at best.
These MF’ers are great drummers:
Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd…Yeah!
You’re preaching to the choir. Weckl is my favorite drummer, ever. I’ve listened to Joe’s Garage about 1000 times, and I still get goosebumps when I hear “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”.
But the guys you mentioned are session drummers. They are the Delta Force of drummers, the best of the best, the guys who get called in to fix things other people have fucked up, or just to kick ass.
That’s not Phil Collins and that’s not the role of most drummers. Collins was a great drummer in a great band. You can’t really fault him for not being more than that. It would be like saying Mariano Rivera is a lousy pitcher because he doesn’t throw complete games.

I saw the Chick Corea Electric Band with Herbie Hancock in the '80’s. Dave did a solo, I needed a shovel to pick my jaw off the floor. I couldn’t believe drums could do that, much less humans.

Wasn’t Jimmy Page pissed off at Phil for fucking up when he sat in with Zep at Live-Aid? Apparently Phil didn’t think he needed to rehearse ahead of time.

Now you are showing your age
Live Aid…You do realize that if you were conceived backstage at Live Aid, your now old enough to run for Congress…
According to Atlantic Records, Collins’s total worldwide sales as a solo artist, as of 2000, were 150 million.[2]
Collins has won numerous music awards throughout his career, including seven Grammy Awards, five Brit Awards?winning Best British Male three times, an Academy Award, and two Golden Globes for his solo work.[3][4] He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010.
Collins is one of only three recording artists (along with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson) who have sold over 100 million albums worldwide both as solo artists and (separately) as principal members of a band.[5]
When his work with Genesis, his work with other artists, as well as his solo career is totalled, Collins had more top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the 1980s than any other artist.[6]
In 2008, Collins was ranked the 22nd most successful artist on the “The Billboard Hot 100 Top All-Time Artists”.[7]

Uh, thanks Pat. Did you just call me old?

Let’s face the facts, I doubt there are too many people posting in this thread who are not at least in their mid-late 30’s. We are all “old” here.
Funny how these conversations spiral into ultimate technical prowess over musicality. Fact is about 12 people in the world give a crap enough to purchase recordings of these ultimate technicians - even when there were ‘record stores’.
I concur that Collins has recorded plenty of schlocky songs, but the guy has recorded/played jazz and pro rock going back to the early 70s.
It’s not like the drummer 101 guys from Foreigner, Scorpions, AC/DC, pop songs, old country, polka, etc who barely move off of being a metronome.

460, is the heart of rock ‘n roll still beatin’?
LOL!
God, I couldn’t stand Hewey Lewis either.
Then again, I hated almost all chart-topping music in the 80’s.

Not science. It was a secret Trade off of music during the 80’s. The powers that be thought it would bring the races together if we both agreed to listen to milk toast style artist.
You gave us Phil Collins
We gave you Lionell Ritchie.

I love treco’s avatar too and I always recognize his posts as being funny or quite intelligent. Pretty good for a guy who’s been here as long as me but only 200+ posts!

It would be even better if Treco really was his avatar.
