Athletes are not role models. Anyone who thinks an athlete is a role model needs a REAL role model.
Well done Sir. Athletes are definitely not role models.
Whether you think athletes should be role models or not is the not the issue. Kids look up to atheletes. They always have, they always will. It doesn’t matter if kids have two involved parents at home or not. Athletes are heroes to kids and will always be role models to them. You don’t get to choose if you are going to be a role model, you simply choose how good of a role model you will be.
Phelps can do weed if he wants. Its fucking bullshit that anyone will get up on their high horse when they are probably guilty of worse.

Ahhh, no he can’t, besides the legality issue, it’s also a banned substance by the IOC.
So if he wants to swim at the Olympic’s then he actually can’t do weed if he still wants to compete.
But again that’s HIS choice of compliance to the legality and morality issues of life, sport & the IOC.
“The IOC has decided in the case of social drugs we should take a stand, and Olympic athletes should be put to a somewhat higher standard than society in general” IOC vice president, Dick Pound of Canada.

The funny thing is, the percentage of people who don’t smoke weed because “it’s illegal” has to be statistically insignificant. If someone wants to smoke, they can get it and they will smoke it.
In this economy, we could use the tax on weed and an industry surrounding all things hemp - yes, I know it exists but I mean a greater push for it.
It would create more jobs.
I do think MANY heavy smokers (who end up showing signs of manic depression at some point) are actually latent manic depressives who self-medicate with weed, but that is another topic for conversation.
I think it’ll be out of his piss come next Olympics.

And so will most of the AAS in competitors that take them… how any athlete tests positive at the Olypmics is beyond me.
The bigger issue is that the IOC & US Olympic committee have proof that he has broken the laws and ideals of the Olypmics, be it in or out of competition, and what they now decide to do (or not to do) with one of their star athletes will be questioned by many other competing nations.
It’s kinda taking a backward step if they make an exception and don’t do something.
I’m far more disgusted by the fact that anybody gives even the slightest shit about this than I am by the fact that he smokes. If I was him I would refuse to apologize or even say anything at all.
how does anyone think that he didn’t do something stupid? marijuana is ILLEGAL, whether you like it or not. he’s a public figure and needs to always be conscious of where he is, who he’s with and what he’s doing. when you’re that famous you don’t get to live a “normal” life. having privacy is not really an option. you gotta take the good with the bad.
he’s an idiot and just cost himself many of his endorsements.

Your right, but will it be out of his piss if they knock on his door next week? The IOC and WADA have the option to do unannounced drug testing at any time – so he does have something to worry about as far as drug testing goes.

"The most common period of time is anywhere from 3-30 days, depending on your metabolism and the amount of marijuana that you?ve smoked. This is unfortunate, since it means that while most drug tests can only turn up evidence of other drugs if you?ve been taking the drug within a few days of the drug test, marijuana could still be detected in a urine test up to a month after the last time it is used.

That’s uh… that’s not how that works.

Irrelevant - those pictures were taken in early November and that session would certainly be out of his system by now. Phelps has already started serious training again so it has probably been a while since he last toked. Also consider that he has low body fat and a ridiculous metabolism. From the articles I?ve read it sounds like he?s going to have no issues competing. This is from a Washington Post article:
Though Phelps will not face any sanction from anti-doping authorities for the apparent drug use because marijuana is only prohibited during competition, the U.S. Olympic Committee immediately released a statement chiding Phelps for failing to “fulfill [his] responsibilities” as a role model and describing Phelps’s behavior as “disappointing.”
He is not to bright. This could possibly hurt endorsements. Can’t he hide it better than that? He doesn’t know by now that he is a high profile person that the media would love to expose like this?
