Hey all, I’m writing a really cool presentation for class, regarding steroids, history, and ethics in sports. It will engulf much of the following (that I have time for)
Killing Sacred Cows:
The Lyle Alezedo myth
Chris Benoit murders family and head trauma
Why Ben Johnson got screwed out of his gold medal
The falsity of “clean competition” pre drug testing
Why Drug test sports?
-Are steroids dangerous
-steroid myths
Is drug testing fair in sports?
-BALCO
Who benefits drug testing
-Who is Dick Pound? Who is WADA?
Benefits of prescription drugs
-Ethics of using them non-prescribed (academically + athletically)
Low T and Steroids
-Quality of life and performance
Attack on testosterone (AKA Why the Fuck is the WNBA on TV?)
-Media
-Feminists
-TV/Movies
Anyhow, if people off the top of their heads know any important resources reguarding any of these topics let me know. I already know some great ones in:
-Bigger, Stronger, Faster* (The Side Effects of Being American)
-Speed Trap by Charlie Francis
-Charlie Francis’ articles on T-Nation
-HBO real sports interview
-TC Luoma’s Atomic Dog articles
The biggest thing I’m looking for is if there’s a graph showing % improvement in word records set between like 1950 and 2000 or later?
CLIFF NOTES:
Need legitimate and rational preferably web (free e-book works too) sources on steroid and drug testing ethics in sports. Not asking you to do my assignment for me, as I’m already very involved in it.
I personally think the presentatio is a cool ides, but i would be sure that the teacher is receptive to the subject, i personally wouldnt risk failing a course.
For your graph, it might be best to do the math yourself to ensure you are covering sports that directly relate to your focus. It also might be better to break down the yearly best times/weights/etc. and plot that on a graph. You might want to take into account the countries involved and what their history of steroid use in competition might be.
Oh, and don’t forget you have advances in training procedures as well as equipment to contend with. There was a time when the sub 5 minute mile was the holy grail. Did that standard get blown out of the water due to PEDs or a change in thinking and/or training?
Also, if you are looking to sway people to your side (which I am assuming is pro PED use) then it might be wise to avoid pointing fingers as to why PEDs have been unfairly demonized in the media; that could begin to sound like a brewing conspiracy theory and harm your credibility. Is your beef with the regulations regarding PED use or with a rising trend of “anti-testosterone” sentiment? If you stray into the latter, you are opening yourself up for more criticism as it is so subjective. Present the facts.
You could also look at the source material for films like Bigger, Faster, Stronger to find the actual articles and studies that he used when making the documentary.
As someone said I would make sure the teacher is open to any topic, if you havent already discussed it with said teacher. School is politics and sometimes you have to do things you dont like to get the grade, which is all that matters at this point.
With that being said, I did a major speech on the benefits of steroids if used correctly, and the discussion of it in sports, day to day life. If i can find the document of it, ill shoot it your way.

The first rule of successful academic study in this uber-PC world is to keep your head down and don’t make waves as a student.
It’s stupid and pointless, but a good method of training for arbitrary employers.

Professors own bias’s effect the grades of the student dramatically when grading essay questions, papers, and presentations.

That’s why I got into engineering as soon as I got out of high school. Math and programming are objective. Anything related to society I learn through personal experience.
