People At My Gym

lol awesome

At the gym I go to, there’s obviously the standard quota of frat stars, bros, etc, but it’s a good training atmosphere overall. There’s one guy in particular that stands out to me as being worthy of mention in this thread though. He fits the description of a guy who spends way too much time at the gym and does way too little work while he’s there to a “T.” He’s a skinny older gentleman, probably mid 50’s, so I respect him for getting to the gym every day. But he’s always there before me, and doesn’t appear to be anywhere near wrapping up his workout when I leave. My workouts are usually between 75 and 90 minutes, so he’s gotta be there at least 2 hours a day. I usually see him do probably a total of 6-8 sets the whole time I’m there, and they’re usually isolation exercises. Between sets, he’ll sit on a bench at the side of the room, read the newspaper, talk on his phone, etc. I kid you not, I witnessed him fall asleep on an incline bench between sets of incline dumbbell press. My training partner and I get a good laugh out of watching him, we always joke that he must just want to get away from his wife for a few hours each night!

This happens to me all the time – I go to the gym and start training and people come up to me and say things (usually in a loud voice): “PUT ON SOME PANTS!” and “OH MY GOD COVER YOUR JUNK!!!”

It gets annoying.

To be fair, most power cleans you see end up being reverse curls. Perhaps that was the source of the confusion.

They make you wear pants at your gym? Sad day.

There is a fellow at my gym that I have a hard time not laughing at whenever I see him. His mass is upper body dominant at about an 85/15 split and he is about 6’5" so he literally looks like a giant lollipop. He has a super skinny waist and long legs, and massive chest, shoulders, and arms. He might be the most awkward physique I have even seen.

My gym is really high quality though and is mostly strongman competitors (we have had one compete at worlds strongest man), powerlifters, and bodybuilders, with a very strange mix of personal training clients that I can’t even work next to because I want to slap their trainers. I don’t know much, but I do know that a personal trainer should stop talking about their self long enough to give at least basic form cues, and shouldn’t be working out with friends in the middle of a training session.

This guy literally has 60 year old women as clients and they spend most of their sessions waiting for him to finish his own workout sets and tell them what to do next (he is a “professional” bodybuilder of course).

I workout in my college gym which is filled with frat dudes wearing tanks (some cut all the way down the side to reveal non-existant lats). My partner and I are usually the only two wearing shirts with sleeves. The amount of ego in that gym is retarded. The stuff I see is hilarious, to the point of laughing (quarter squats, flexing in the mirror, half ROM benching, wearing straps to deadlift 135, etc). Although, it probably doesn’t help that all the cardio machines (used only by girls) are up on the second floor and look down on the weight room…

I was repping 405 on my DL’s the other day at the end of my back workout, and had some small wanna-be-trainer come up to me and tell me I was cheating because I was using straps. I asked him to put on the straps and try to pick up the bar. He then told me he wasn’t used to straps because “he doesn’t cheat” so he wouldn’t be able to lift it while wearing them, then proceeded to walk away with his arms flared out…only to correct someone else’s form across the gym. Good times.
Haha this description sounds EXACTLY like my uni gym, including the cardio machines overlooking the weight room. Working out in a uni “fitness center” is an interesting experience. I love all the weird looks I get when I do exercises that are somewhat less common to normal gym-goers (e.g. face-pulls, good mornings). The copycats amuse me too. I do Pendlay-style rows in the fitness center fairly regularly, but I have NEVER seen anybody else do them until last week. The guy started doing them about 5min or so after I started. Coincidence? I think not. This is why I cloister myself away in the powerlifting gym. Until I get tired of hanging around dudes all the time lol.

But even the powerlifting gym isn’t without its weirdness. I was warming up for some heavy squats and this greasy-looking fuck steals my squat rack while I’m getting some water (unofficial rules in that room are that the racks are first come, first serve and yours until you’re damn well finished). He takes 1/2 of the weight plates off the bar and somehow still struggles to “lift” (which I say here because I’m still not sure whether he was trying to do 1/8 squats or some truly shitty 1/4 ROM good mornings) the weights. He then supersets with something else (I’m not sure what exactly) which involves attaching hooks to his feet and hanging upside down for a few min, suspended by the hooks. I’m more amused than pissed at this point, but I tell him that I wasn’t done with the squat rack.

This results in a very long (and very weird) conversation, where he gave me some cock-and-bull layman’s lecture on my own major (genetics) and had me watch an equally stupid video on the topic on his phone. He then got kicked out by the gym staff (who had had troubles with him before) as he wasn’t a student and didn’t pay for a membership. I’m just surprised I managed not to burst into laughter until after he got booted. Good times in the powerlifting gym.
LOL I like this thread. This story is kind of different then the other ones.

I lift at my university gym, and sadly I’m on of the more developed guys there. Last semester, there was this very small kid, like around 5’2" and just little skinny fat kid. Anyways he came up one day, asked what I did for my Squat (LOL I squat like mid-300’s for reps, but that’s a lot here) and we talked. He said he was just starting out, only could Squat 95 lbs for reps with good form, stuff like that. Really nice kid, obviously trying to do things right, wasn’t on a retarded program, just obviously a beginner. So we talked a few times, and I helped him in what ways I could, just telling him to eat, know it takes awhile, etc.

So there’s this other kid, who happens to be in some of my classes. He wears and EliteFTS hoodie, so I figured I’d try to talk to him. Well, he’s a douche. He moderately strong, but is the guy that dive bombs his squats to ATG and thinks anyone who doesn’t isn’t really lifting. Is the ‘straps are for pussies’ crowd, really has that ‘hardcore’ mentality that’s not only silly in this commercial gym, but also just dumb bro-shit. Like he talks shit to me that I do pulldowns sometimes (I do chins too, but for him it’s ONLY chins and rows for Back) or that I don’t touch my chest on Incline Presses. I’ve tried to tell him my goals are different, but he doesn’t get that I suppose. But really he’s cool with me, whatever.

Anyways, I’m lifting one day while both these guys are in there. I had seen newb in the Squat rack OHP’ing the bar and seen mega-douche at the lockers when I was coming in and gave him a head nod lol. Anyways, I go in and am doing something, when I see Mega Douche go over to Newb, and start kind of giving him shit. Newb had like 3 more sets, and Mega Douche wanted the Squat Rack.

Telling the kid that he shouldn’t be wearing glove they aren’t for men (Newb had torn like 3 callouses and said he got some gloves for right now lol), telling him he wasn’t using enough weight to have the rack, made some jokes about going to the Bitch Room (what most of us call this little room with like 8 lb weights, Swiss balls, and gymnast mats for girls mostly to just go work abs lol).

Basically I had to go over there and kind of tell Mega Douche to leave him alone, and that Newb was nice and had the makings to be a serious lifter. Well at this point Mega Douche starts telling the kid to ya know, never go arm iso work, that he needs to just throw 225 on the bar and ‘man up’ and Squat it (that’s probably a 2.5 BW squat for Newb) . LOL. Newb jut kind of nodded, and I asked Mega Douche to come spot me to get him away from Newb. lol. Later talked to Newb again, said he wasn’t phased but just could see why people would be scared to go to the gym initially, because he thought that’s how every day would be.

Regardless, my gym is so full with douchebags and retards the new kids just starting out have such a tough time. It sucks. Like it’s shit like that makes Planet Fitness appealing to newbies.
My old gym had a fairly new typical frat guy that was giving a kid shit one day because he wanted his dumbbells. Everybody liked the kid because he was also new but he was making a solid effort and was just a nice guy. One of the big guys (apparently he was a some type of ex-military turned private security) walks over there, my friend starts nudging me to draw my attention to the situation (this apparently had happened before with others), and Big guy tells the frat guy “You need to leave this kid alone and learn to be more respectful” Much smaller frat guy bows up and big guy is like “If you really want to take this farther, I will break you in half and make you eat your own shit out of your ass.” It was the single most hysterical thing I have ever heard and Frat guy never showed up at that time again.

lol awesome

I think that, unless you are lucky enough to train at one of the handful of serious gyms around the country, the douche factor is generally off the charts. Anywhere folks congregate to perform (for the mirror or the crowd) ego takes center stage. As does competitive one-upmanship. What I find most frustrating/fascinating is that so many people think nothing of imposing or intruding upon your training.

Most recently a younger trainee decked out in his finest Extreme Couture haute couture gothic cross and skull shirt decided to perfect his form on the spinning heel kick. His practice space unfortunately overlapped with the space I was using (I arrived first) to do weighted pull ups–this space is more commonly known as the dual pulley cable station/pull up station. I was unaware it was also this kid’s dojo. So while I pulled and strained, and repped, resisting the urge to take a crack at those “kipping pull ups” all the trainers at this particular gym endorse, this kid spun and slung his leg (maybe elevated to waist high) around. He would then reset, look in the mirror and then shoot me a glare with his best prison eyes. (Made all the more intimidating when I realized the kid was wearing official UFC brand bag gloves). When one of his, I can only assume 1/4 speed (no one seriously trying to throw a kick could be that slow) flails came within a few inches of where I had just dropped down at the completion of my set, I politely asked if he would mind either backing up some, or perhaps even consider perfecting his killing technique in the vacant cardio room adjacent to the free weight area. I stressed to my new chum that this was the best solution available to us as he wouldn’t accidentally kick me during my set and I wouldn’t then deliberately shatter his femurs.

Master Ninja Killer hit me with his most intimidating look, so I met his gaze and stared back; after about thrity or so awkward unblinking moments between us, he turned and walked away. He then proceeded to load a barbell on the flat bench with 185 and 1/4 rep it; always taking care to stare me down during his rest sets.

This is what happens when you train at a “fitness center” in the 'burbs and kids are on summer break from school…

So anyway there was three young guys, must’ve been in their late teens/early 20s all working in together on a bench. Thing is, they had like 6 sets of dumbells. Every time they finished with one set, they’d just leave it on the floor and go get another set. They were doing the whole flexing their abs in the mirror and texting shit that everyone hates too. I could see the big dude eyeing them up, clearly not impressed.

So then the big dude walks past me and says to me “I am saying something.” It was the most ominous sounding sentence I’ve ever heard in my life. He walked over to the guys, took one aside and whispered something in his ear.

I have no idea what the dude said, but the three kids picked up all the dumbells, including a set I’m pretty sure they hadn’t even been using, and left the gym.

Lol I read that and started thinking I’ve got some stuff in common with Mega Douche, as people tend to assume that I’m one based on how I dress/look/walk/grunt when I lift. But whatever, I don’t really care what people think I look like.

But you just don’t act like that. That’s crossing the line from being a little cocky to being a total fucking asshole. You have the patience of a saint. Kudos to you for handling that so well. I know I wouldn’t have. Dedicated newbs that are willing to learn are awesome. It’s great helping out people get better in something you love to do.

I feel much better giving up my squat rack to a newb doing proper ATG squats with 95lbs than 225lb 1/4 squats and thinking he’s the man. Hell, I’d rather give up the squat rack to someone who’s going to curl in it. There seems to be some kind of mentality in uni gyms that you must squat 225lbs to not be considered a pussy, no matter how bad the quality is.

I don’t know if any of you have heard of Joe Merrell, but he was a pretty big guy in the powerlifting scene years ago and from my area. He was am absolute mammoth. 6’5ish and well over 330 lbs. That man could put up some serious weight and he was a redhead.

He owned a gym in the area and had a rule of no belly or cutoff shirts for guys, but girls could wear almost nothing LOL my kinda guy! Anyways a kid tested him on it and he told him to leave. The kid wouldn’t and talked shit to him. He picked him up and threw him through the front double doors like a ragdoll knocking 1 of the doors completely off the building. Then went walking after the tossed human projectile. I have never seen a frat bro run so fast.

Especially when you consider that none of these guys are proficient in any martial arts or combat as guys that are typically are respectful and don’t look for fights, so it’s not likely they have a secret weapon (which doesn’t guarantee a victory). They’re just dumb punks.
