and these are more alt / americana:
Ryan Adams
Wilco (just their first two albums)

It’s interesting you list them in that order, since Ryan Adams has a great song called Blue Sky Blues… and Wilco has an album called Sky Blue Sky. I think Wilco is alright…but just that one Ryan Adams song owns everything Wilco ever made in my opinion.

The song Casino Queen from Wilco’s first album a.m. is one of my all time favorites. And they’re double disc has a song that mentions Pensacola, which is where I was born, so that’s probably why I like their first two albums.
But yeah, overall, Ryans Adams is better. His stuff with Whiskeytown is good too.

I’m a HUGE fan of both of RA and Wilco. It’s funny, a few years back there was the whole 'Whiskeyton vs. Wilco and Ryan Adams vs Jeff Tweedy thing going – which is the better alt-country band, the better songwriter. At this point, Wilco is just a staright-up rock n roll band, while Adams still displays a HEAVY country influence at times. I’ve seen Adams live and wanted my money back, and I’ve seen Wilco where I left convinced I’d seen the best rock band in America.
I can’t play favorites, Tweedy is fucking brilliant, and so is Adams.
This clip fucking KILLS. If Adams could do this at every live show he’d be a legend. Watch it to the end, he KILLS it. Tell me if you can watch to the end and not get chills. This is what a rock n roll show should be…

And of course we can’t forget Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt.

Wow their butch, Johnny Cash, is Nashville. So you just shot yourself in the foot, cowboy.

That was superb. I would love to see RA live…in a big bad way. I saw Wilco at Coachella…but I was so far back I didn’t get the full experience…at all. Outdoor festivals are great, but small venues for certain people are a must. RA in a tiny venue, that’s what I’m holding my breath for.

Johnny Cash started at Sun Records in Memphis – nearby, but VERY different from Nashville. He spent time in Nashville (so has every other ‘outlaw’ you can name) but can’t really be accused of ever conforming to the ‘Nashville Sound’. The Folsom Prison and San Quentin albums were about as opposite of ‘Nashville Country’ as you’re gonna find at that time. Learn your shit before you start dishing it, Tex.
