So your mind isn’t closed any on subject?
No it is probably closed to a degree on many subjects . I think being opened minded requires me to be ready to reevaluate all my opinions .
Let me ask you , do you feel any responsibility to tell the truth even though this is an anonymous forum . Would you consider it a lie to repeat on this forum something that is not truthful ?

Fill in the blank with anything was my point. There actually is a further significant point coming. So lets try the underlined above. What DO you know to be true and how? Name anything.

I guess Thunder bolt is not going to answer , My point is IMO there is a lot of Disinformation and Lies , hidden in those closed minds , Socialist, Kenyan,Nazi and that is just a starting point. I believe that even though this is an anonymous forum Integrity and Honesty should be a goal.

I would say numbers are on the side of the Professor, I think the Professor sounds arrogant and close minded. I would not pay any attention to the Professor , I would figure it out myself
Even if it did work the Professor would try and take credit for the patent .

He sounds arrogant and close minded to you because you don’t have a lot of knowledge on the subject. In reality it is the student who is arrogant (well in truth just naive).
If the student had came to the professor with something credible then he would have listened.

It sounds like you understand that some one that does not listen or states emphatically that something is or isn’t. Saying something won’t work with out a clear explanation of why.
And what if the explanation is not so simple? What if you cannot explain it in a few easy steps? The professor could have said “it is against the laws of thermodynamics” but to the first year student that is just a sound byte. It is not a proper explanation.
To have a proper discussion the first year would need to read a number of books and papers on the topic. But these papers and books would require much more advanced mathematics. So the student must first learn the mathematics. All in all it would take 6 months to 1 year of serious study before the student was at the same level on the topic as the professor.
I will ask again: If the Jehovah Witness came around to your house, will you invite them in and listen to everything they have to say? If not, are you close minded?

+1. Sounds pretty close minded to me.
The strangest thing about T-Nation is the conservative posters are the most rational and enlightening posters.
The left posters here are either crazy, stupid, trolls, trying to sound smart, or trying to turn everything into a joke.
The libertarian posters are blind ideologues. They will argue every topic as if we were living in a perfect libertarian world except for that issue.
The “moderate” posters are the worst of all because they don’t really believe in anything but being open-minded. Hence they inject little knowledge or insight into a topic.
It is very interesting. My other favorite forum (sherdog) is quite different. On sherdog there are many retarded conservative posters, and quite a few reasonable moderates. The moderates on sherdog are moderates BECAUSE they understand the issue. The moderates here are the generally people who are ignorant.

Then you should have worded your story a little better.
Why? My entire point was that to an uneducated person the students idea might appear credible. Hence the professor might be seen as close minded. In reality the student had no clue and it was obvious to anyone with knowledge of the subject area.
So how do you differentiate between the knowledgeable and the close minded? The person who has simply had a rough day and doesn’t want to discuss it (but obviously won’t change his mind on the topic)? The person who has been through the same argument a dozen times and so cuts you short, or is not convinced by your reasoning?
Many of the people who are labeled close minded are anything but. For instance I will not argue about gun control with anyone who lacks the basic facts. And it is not because I am close minded. It is because such a debate is not constructive. They simply don’t have the knowledge to come up with decent arguments (regardless of whether they are pro-gun or anti-gun).

I know how to differentiate between a good teacher and one that is not, and an open mind is
truley essential

Absolutely , I have no knowledge in your area , the story you told me was of an impatient teacher
Which is my entire point. You are horrible at telling if someone is close minded unless you have knowledge in the subject area or know the person well.

Again you are acting as if you can easily tell if someone has an open mind or not. Unless you know somebody well, or already have a fair understanding in the area you are discussing, you have no damn idea if they are open minded or not. And it is extremely close minded to think you do.

No I do not believe so , an opened minded Professor would have said “NO because of X Y and Z”
A teachers job is to teach I can not judge the professor on this one incident nor on your accounting of it, but teaching requires dealing with stupid questions .He may have just been tired of that kids particular stupid questions
