Old-Ish, Round-Ish, Weak-Ish

Fully agree on the false grip. Not pushing near the weights you are, but I use it for bench and MP. If I wrap my thumb, it is guaranteed pain in my wrists and elbows. Never noticed about the shoulders…but I can only hurt so many places at once, right?

Moving some very impressive weight! If this is weak and out of shape, I might be afraid to come in here when you feel strong and in shape…

Mr. Strick,

I forgot how much of a difference a little tweak can make, especially as we age.

Today

A touch of CARDIO!!! My own make believe Crossfit and it was an awful failure.

Concept 2 Rower- 500M
Hang Cleans 135 x10
Burpees x15

AMRAP 10 minutes

The answer for those scoring at home is 2. Somwehere around the start of the 3rd 500 M row I became very dizzy, learned a new word (Hypoxia) and nearly passed out/shit myself/died, in no particular order. God bless the Crossfitters. I followed this 8 minute ass whipping with a nap and flu-like symptoms, at some point I may have started crying, I’m still processing my emotions on this but it seems like it wouldn’t be as difficult if I didn’t love the cookies so much.

I have used false grip for several years and would never go back. Definitely less stress on the shoulders for me.

Don’t know how much the T injections will increase your numbers but it definitely should help with BF%. That low of a T reading makes it extremely hard for the body to burn fat.

Pushing big numbers in here. Nice work.

Dbasler,

Thank you, I appreciate it. Burning some fat would probably be fun, as long as it happens while I am on the couch or floating in my pool, otherwise it seems to much like work.

I forgot to post my workouts the last three days so

Any ideas on deadlift set-up to prevent or at least minimize the bar drifting forward before it gets to the knees? I have noticed that even with moderate weights (450-500) I seem to be floating forward and losing contact with my legs. When I use lighter weights I usually end up bleeding on the shins, but anything over the mid-400’s I drift forward shortly after leaving the floor.

KB Swings- 50x20x20x20

Deads- 135, 225, 315, 405, 455 (drift) 495 (drift) 545 (drift) 585 (drift)

Cleans- 135x3, 165x3, 195x3, 225x3

Studiously ignoring your characterization of 450-500# as ‘moderate weights’…

But I stopped by for more than a strength-shaming; I have questions. I see where you do snatch-grip deads, and was wondering 1) what role do they play in your training (ie, what is their purpose); and 2) do you do them from the floor, or blocks of some sort.

I will now exit your thread before I pull something.

Does the bar have to drag all the way up from your ankle to the shins?, I would guess whether it does or not depends more on individual body mechanics, not bad form.

I tend to scrape the skin just above my knees, but then I am a shortass. It doesn’t look very HARDCORE, just like I fall over a lot.

I have taken to drawing red marks down my shins with my wife’s lipstick to fit in.

Video?

You pulling with round plates?

Eyedentist,

At my size it is akin to getting out of a chair albeit with another me, my wife, and a pair of moderate sized Australian Shepherds on my back, when you look at it like that it is no big deal. I will be doing all weight analogies in the most vague and mathematically irresponsible way I can from now on i.e. “That is one third the weight of a 4 year old Beluga whale”, my responses will now require that you answer at least two LSAT questions before you can determine the result.

Plus as you are about to see in my two short videos, I am hella fat.

FarmerBrett,

It does not have to, but you want it to, only because it looks cool. I often draw on myself with lipstick as well, nothing to be ashamed of.

KP,

I checked and yes the plates are round. I also made two videos, but I think I figured out the problem.

Read your question about drifting with the dead over 400 lbs. It is my understanding and practice not to drag the weight against my shins anymore. My shins like this because they are scarred from the bleeding years of deads. I read some interesting info a while ago about kinesiology concerning deads that stated the bar should be lifted about mid shoe all the way up therefore sparing the shins while possibly still contacting the thighs and hips toward the upper position. I’ve been lifting this way for a little while and prefer it now. Hope this is helpful.

Tsk. Tsk. Taunting the playground bully, eh?

Kp,

It is an urge I cannot resist. Plus it’s fun

My workouts are becoming stale.

This happens to me from time to time, but I am having a hard time convincing myself to not do yoga and go vegan.

In a nutshell this is what my workouts look like, using last week as a very consistent example

Any idea on how to jazz shit up a bit? I have a home gym, and a bunch of nagging injuries that prevent being “sporty” or “explosive” so as much as a tough mudder sounds fun, I’m not sure the fused ankle or dicked up discs will hold up. Remebr there are no stupid suggestions besides dieting.

Some glitter, a disco ball, a stripper pole and of course a pony!

My first time visiting, I think. You are strong.

Odd lifts, strongman stuff like keg tosses, juggling sandbags…

Well, you said there are no stupid suggestions except dieting, but with wonky discs, I think what I’m about to suggest is stupid.

Here it is: Learn to throw heavy stuff. There’s no loaded flexion of the spine involved, but lots of hyperextension and torsion. Don’t know if your back could hold up to that, Track and field versions of the weight throws wouldn’t see much problem from your ankle. Some of the highland games events don’t involve spinal torsion, eg, caber toss and the non spinning version of weight over bar. If you get into these you find yourself starting to shape your training to help with the throws, at least to some degree.

OG,

The ball and the pole are already there so I will set up a glitter and pony fund post haste.

hel320,

Thank you and Thank you.

OTH Steve,

That may not be a terrible idea, it would definitely change things up a bit.

Carl Darby,

I actually threw the shot in college way back when and my daughter throws now, so this might be a fun way to spend a little more quality time tossing things around. I’ve always wondered about highland games stuff, we have a Scottish Games here in 3 weeks so maybe I will check it out and talk to some folks. It has to be more interesting than another day of benching.
