I am a very proud portuguese, and i’ve been reading this topic a long time ago. So do you really english guys think we dont lose with you guys since 1966 because we are good divers??? Camon guys face it, you dont have what it takes to defeat Portugal a long time ago (40 years) and your game with equador sucked big. I guess nobody was countting on Portugal, because we are just divers as you all say, but may i remind you all, we lost the european cup in the final with greece ( defended all the game) and we weren t winning as english and dutchs, didn t blame the referee and so on.

Alsountill now only 2 teams won every games, Germany and Portugal so get real. As we say in portugal “When you suck at sex the blame is allways in the condom”
I DO think if your player hadn’t gotten our best player sent off we might have had a chance, yeah.

Germany have won every game by playing ‘stand-up’ football, being sporting, playing as a team and just getting on with it.

Can Portugal honestly say the same? No-one doubts there is talent in your squad but I for one have no respect for teams to try to bend rules over and above trying to win the game ‘within’ the rules. What Ronaldo did was far worse than exaggerating a foul - not that I like ANY sort of simulation.

Thiery Henry is my hero but I was disgusted at his behaviour against Spain. SO it’s not just becuase I’m a bitter England fan. ALthough I am obviously… lol

You know, in Portugal we dont like much Ronaldo also, our biggest love will allways be Figo, and i agree with you, ronaldo was a bit badlly with his team mate but the fact is rooney was not too smart also, and the red card he received was his entire fault. the game with Holand anyone could win game because the referee was crazy, but that foul on ronaldo should be red card in the first place. Maybe than the game would be much fair and nice with less cases. And of course Portugal has one of the best goal keepers from the world cup. Our defense and middle field is great, but our striker (Pauleta) sucks big, otherwise we should score much more goals. So perhaps this is our turn to get lucky, Germany, Italy and France were champions already, this time perhaps our small country will be big again like 500 years ago.

Ronaldo is one of those guys you want to just slap the taste out of his mouth for the way he smurks. I was at a bar for the Holland-Portugal game when he got taken out and the Portugese fans were actually happy to see him leave and liked the kid they replaced him with better (name?).

Figo does his fair share of theatrics. He got Boulharouz ejected for a supposed elbow. If you watch the replay you will see it did not even hit him and he totally faked that one. We were playing 11-10 at the time. But still, we should have scored regardless and I am not saying he is the reason we lost.

Your goalie is awesome, no argument there.

Here is a quote everyone posting in this thread needs to read and accept:

“You are what your record says you are”

-Bill Parcells

End of story. Anything else is conjecture and beer hall verbal joustung.

Italy, Portugal, France and Germany deserve to be where they are. If they are not worthy of being champions, they will not win the title.

Sons of Dis!

Those self righteous FIFA Fuehrers have suspended our precious Frings from playing in the next match against Italy!

It’s so unfair. Anyone who has seen the fray after the Argentina match can clearly see that german players were self defending themselves.

That really pisses me off cause he is a key player…

Exactly. Couldn’t agree more.

Soccer is an extremely important part of the lives of the people in most European countries, and Portugal, England and The Netherlands are no exception. There is also a lot of History between all of them – Portugal has consistently beaten both teams in the past (especially England), and even with all the theatrics and antics – which, having several Portuguese family members and friends, I can tell you are VERY typical of Portuguese culture – they were the better team.

I also believe that Portugal needs to win more than any other country in the World Cup right now, and that drive also has its impact. They are indeed extremely driven. The odds – NOBODY I know in Portugal expected their team to outlive Brazil! – continue to increase that drive, as does the fact that they are an audience favorite – as underdogs usually are.

Most of Latin America and Brazil are now rooting for Portugal, now that all their teams were eliminated.

Beating France will be EXTREMELY difficult, though – even though Brazil played horribly (and deserved their defeat) the fact is that the French proved they are merciless, and extremely good in both endurance and technique. Hopefully Ricardo will continue to deliver and make up of the portuguese team’s inability to score. I would NOT be surprised if it went again into PKs, and I honestly think that will be the only way Portugal will get into the final – there is NO way they will be able to score against France, so we can only hope they keep them from scoring too and win on PKs…

Talking about Italy vs Germany:

When I was a teenager I always spent Summer Vacation in Europe. While I was there I always watched a Detective TV Series called “Derrick”, that was very popular. Actually “popular” is a bit of an understatement, since the series ran for almost 25 years, from the mid 70s to the late 90s. It was EXTREMELY well written, and the production values were pretty good. It put many American TV series to shame, especially at the time.

One of the lines I will NEVER forget from that series happened in an Italian Restaurant (back when Italian food was still a novelty in Germany) and went something like this:

(Derrick and his colleague Klein were talking after interrogating the restaurant owner, who was very talkative, very loud and waving his arms a lot)

Derrick: Why is he so excited?
Klein: He’s not excited – he’s Italian!

Priceless!

As my Millwall-loving pal said of Christiano Ronaldo straight after the match…

‘I want to cut his face.’

You DO have a good keeper though. Although Mad Jens is a crazy god.

No just divers, very bad spellers as well, haha.
I know you’re kidding, but c’mon! Dat is een betje kinderlijk, toch?

Portuguese is a Romance language, and hence the spelling and grammar are dramatically different from West Germanic languages like Dutch and English. So it’s as hard for them to learn to spell English as it is for you to learn, say, Spanish. Or Portuguese, for that matter. For example, how much of this do you understand:

Nightman: nao lhe ligues, estes holandeses sao uns parvos! Eu bem sei, vivi la’ durante varios anos e tive que os gramar…

And, by the way, while there are only 22 million native Dutch speakers, there are actually over 10x more native Portuguese speakers – 240 Million people, to be exact. Also, if you put together all romance languages (Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian and Romanian) they add up to over 700 million native speakers, which is more than all West Germanic languages (German, English and Dutch, plus Scots, Yiddish and some other smaller languages) put together…

So, you might definitely consider learning, say, Spanish and then try it out in a Spanish-language forum so we can make fun of YOU.

Hey, Amsterdam Dier (or do you prefer Amsterdam Beest? – sounds slightly less pansy), again with regards to the spelling… Here’s People’s Exhibit 1:

Christiano Ronaldo
It’s Cristiano Ronaldo, not Christiano. No “h” in there. In Portuguese the word for “Christ” is “Cristo”, so Christian (the name) is Cristiano, much like Christopher is Cristovao.

(Funnily enough, the word for Christian, the Jesus Christ follower, is a different word – “Cristao”)

But, contrary to Mr.Dier, I won’t make fun of you, since your mistake is perfectly understandable.

However, before you continue bashing him, I’d recommend you visit his birthplace. I’ve been there. It’s basically one of the poorest, lowest class parts of what is already a relatively poor and undeveloped part of Portugal (Madeira Island, which is part of Portugal, much like Hawaii is of the US). It makes the Brazilian Favelas look like middle class. Why did you think he felt so comfortable in Manchester? So, even though you might not like his antics, you have to realize that if he wasn’t for those antics he probably would never have gotten to where he did…

Had no idea. Not often I have to type a Manu player’s name…lol

Totally agree though with you though. If it weren’t for his cheating antics, he would never be in the semi-finals. Ha ha.

The only thing worse than a talentless, overpaid footballer is a very talented one that cheats rather than rely on his skills. See Rivaldo last WC, Henry this WC and C Ronaldo too.

I appreciate some players had a tough childhood but you know what? So do many other people who don’t ever end up on ?100,000 a week to play a game. If he can’t respect the very thing that has gotten him out of the gutter then what CAN he respect?

His life will be hell if he comes back here for another season.

That’s just not how it works. A very famous – and very true – American movie quote is:

"
You can take the girl out of the trailer park, but you can’t take the trailer park out of the girl!
"

I sincerely doubt he will go back to Manchester. SCP (his old club from Lisbon) wants him back, and they can afford him. Why go back to gloomy Manchester when you can have sunny Lisbon? Plus, his girlfriend works for Portuguese TV (right outside Lisbon)…
1-packlondoner wrote:

My thoughts on it.

Any player that clutches themself or that causes play to be stopped because they are ‘in pain’ should spend a minimum of three minutes on the sidelines before they can rejoin the game to erm… Make sure they are ok.

This would surely cut down on exaggerated claims of injury.

Any player motioning or requesting for an opposition player to be carded should instantly be yellow carded themselves.

Only the captains of the two teams should be able to approach the referee and question a decision. Attempts to surround or otherwise intimidate a referee should result in a yellow card for all offenders except the captains, unless they too are attempting to intimidate the referee.

I think these measures would go some way to cleaning up the game.
Great suggestions. After all, what is the captain’s armband for? So the ref knows who to talk to! They do it better in league and union. The player who needs talking to and the captain of both teams are called out by the ref, everyone else is waved away and the ref won’t start talking until they go away. That way the players know that they aren’t going to get anywhere by intimidating the ref.

One thing I don’t like, and I’m not sure if this happens in football, is that the refs are nowing talking to players by their first names. I think becoming too familiar can break down the levels of respect. It was better when the players were just referred to by their team colour and number e.g. “blue team No. 8”, and the players called the ref “sir”. Keeps it simple and respectful.

Fair enough… But Steven Gerrard is a scouser and if he can stop stealing hubcaps from cars then Ronaldo should surely be able to not be such a wanker on the biggest stage there is.

The World Cup is the chance to show what you are truly made of. Germany are doing that. England may have done that by failing to beat you, but I fear Ronaldo also did that with those actions.

PS - I must stop praising Germany. Makes me feel all unclean inside… lol

Agreed. Some times you see a ref just too in awe of Ronaldinho or fatty Ronaldo to book him.

That overcomplicated rant about young Ronaldo gives me a headache. All I know is that we need proof (pics)of his girlfriend everyone talks about so we finally can systematically and deliberately understand the whole issue of diving and growing up in a portuguese trailer park on some blasted backyard island!

We need Photos of that hussy ASAP!

You do have a point there. I agree that Cristiano Ronaldo is not exactly providing great press for Portugal. Not that I fret too much about it, since only my friends know that I’m of Portuguese descent… Most people in the US don’t even know what Portugal is… Plus my extremely obviously Brazilian wife tends to deflect attention a lot.

However, again, you do have a point.
1-packlondoner wrote:

Hey, Germany might be one of the most mind-numbing boring places I’ve ever lived in, but I have nothing but praise about all Germans I’ve met. Still have many friends there, especially at the Max Planck institute, which, by the way, is at the forefront of scientific research in many areas – which is amazing, considering their lack of financial resources.

Plus, I think we can all agree that ANYTHING is better than France winning the Cup. Right?

next year next major international championship, same fookin difference, damn you knew what I meant, sorry to say the euros were next year

I am interested who are the the rest of the English guys on here supporting now?

Germany? err no sorry never gonna happen
Portugal? nuff said already
Italy? cheating divers too
France? have we always hated the French too? (especially if you are a lorry driver!)

Germany I’m afraid. But I’ll be hating myself the whole time…
