On a different not how do you guys think this willeffect the game of soccer in Aus.
In melbourne here the world cup has generated huge interest with the traditional sport of AFL being nudged of the back page as wellas taking up the front page. All my mates have been talking about the world cup and even mentioned membership to Melbourne Victory in the a league. As a previous post stated there is now the Asian cup and the asian champions league as well as world cup qualifiers to start again in 2 years. This could be the bridge tv and sponsors etc… need to tap into the lucrative asian market with there massive popluation. I have a feeling what we have experienced in the previous 3 weeks could just be the tip of the iceberg. With massive junior numbers and the teenage to 20 year olds with a seeming acceptance of soccer could the Aussie sporting landscape change in the next 20 years?
By the way I am an AFL fan along with my mates but dont feel threatened by other sports as alot of older Aussies seem to be thus being able to enjoy all sports.
Maxi Rodriguez goal.
Joe Cole goal.
As you can see it was off his chest, bounced before it reached him I grant you, but still off his chest.
(and from further out than Rodriguez)
Both great goals and in my opinion impossible to put one above the other.

my God i cant believe i missed both of these goals. they’re absolutely stunning! thank you!
Not sure how this will affect Aussie soccer, but I get the feeling there’s just SO much sport in Australia already its going to be hard elevating soccer to the stature of cricket afl or rugby. I’d love to see it take over afl, then shit squarely down its throat. GOD I hate afl… ok breathe… breathe…!! ![]()
Would be nice to see soccer/football/whateveryoucallit take the route of other sports like cricket & have a TV ref. It would stamp out falling tactics that every team in the game employ day in day out, to the detriment of the game.
Vess.

Anyway, today I will mostly be cheering on Ghana in honour of my Ghanaian brother-in-law. Plus the fact that the nauseating commentators masturbating over everything Ronaldinho & co do is really starting to rile me.
Agreed. Every time Leonardo is on the BBC they just talk about how good looking and talented he is. Embarrassing, sycophantic and borderline gay.
Brazil have not done much too deserve all this praise which in truth deserves to be shared out between Spain, Argentina and Germany at the moment.
C’mon the Ghana!

Oh dear… Is it just me or does that sound ominous for how Juventus rate their chances of NOT getting relegated?
Ooh… he FELL out of the window?

Aussies have an ability of supporting their country but in the same breath bagging it.
Strange but true.
you have some italian blood i supposed ![]()
we also are master in that task
Yesterday defenitly was the worst day in this world cup so far…I can’t believe that the referee gave a penalty for that!!!
what a joke…
And Ukraine vs. Switzerland… looked like 2nd league football at the most (mostly 2nd half, 1st had some good scenes) and those PK’s from Switzerland were probably the weakest I’ve seen in WC history…
So now it is Italy vs. Ukraine (who have played 120 min. and are the weaker team anyway) what a shame…
For today: Brazil vs. Ghana, I really hope Ghana goes through, and France vs. Spain - If they still don’t use their strikers in the right way and if spain is able to controll Henry they should have the advantage but I am really looking forward to see the match.

I think it will give a huge boost. What matters is if it captures the imagination of players of the future, and sponsors. Not so much the audiences, or general public, if it starts getting more airtime then they will follow along.
Aust. was really ripped off with Italy, but Aust. also let a lot of opportunites go. In my opinion Aust. are not great at kicking goals - period. they don’t seem skilled enough to place the ball where the goalie isn’t. If they were, they’d be slaughtering teams all over the place.
Also they are too innocent. … you don’t see Aust. faking injury to get penalty shots etc… and going to ground in the box at the end of the match is just a huge no-no, and helped cost us the game.

Joe Coles goal is easily the best of the 2 no question

how can you say that australia deserved to win??
ok ASSuming that the PK was a bad call (which IMO opinion it is not since, the Aus defender did impede the ITA players progress) You can’t say that the red card to matterazzi was deserved… AT most that should have been a yellow.
So italy played a man down for most of the second period but still won… and they deserved to lose??
i don’;t get that.
Read my post again. Where did I say Italy deserved to lose? Where did I say Australia deserved to win? That’s right, I didn’t.
My only issue is that I don’t think anyone wants to see an otherwise pretty good game decided in the 90th minute on a bush league call like that.
I’m a fan of soccer and of the World Cup, not Italy or Australia. I like to see good soccer. That was not good soccer.
i was referring to grey’s comment’
Ah…well next time just pop over to the quote button. Takes the guess work of “who’s talking to who” out :-).

I don’t understand this mentality that is prevalent in the US, (and judging by your quote - apparently in Australia as well) that for some reason you cannot enjoy soccer and football (or rugby or what have you ) at the same time. That it has to be this hard line one or the other.
Fucking sad and limited I think.

Great post. American football is by far my favorite spectator sport, college and pro. But I grew up playing soccer and would never turn away from watching a great footie match.
I’m also kind of a sucker for the whole “country pride” thing. Not so much for the U.S. team, but just to see these other countries who put so much emotional energy into this world event. It’s breathtaking, IMO.
Very well said, OAR.

overall the referring has been abysmal
I agree wholeheartedly. I heard that the guy who referred the U.S.-Italy match will never ref a FIFA match again. Not that I necessarily think the U.S. should have won (or lost; who can really say?), but that was a rumor going around…
It’s too bad that Ghana is down 2-0 at the half. Renaldo’s goal was great, but Adriano was off and Ghana has been playing better football.

That video doesn’t do that goal justice. I’m not doggin’ ya’, I know you can’t do anything about it. I’m just encouraging anyone who gets a chance to see a clear replay to definitely do so.
I was lucky enough to actually see that one. By far my favorite goal of the Cup so far, maybe one of my favorite of all time. I had to call someone just to tell them about how amazing it was, both the setup and the goal itself.

I didn’t see the Coles goal until just now. I’d say my enthusiasm for the other goal is probably greater just because I actually saw it on TV. But Coles’ is amazing, nonetheless. Both very similar.

He is ridiculously good looking though. In a straight way of course.

True. But Hanson trying to fellate him at every opportunity is somewhat unsettling…
