Obesity Caused By Virus

Well isn’t that just convenient.

Exactly.

Overeating has “something” to do with gaining weight? Something?

I’m sorry, regardless of genes or your metabolism or whatever, if you don’t overeat, how the hell do you get fat?

Another reason for Tony Little, BowFlex and the rest of the carb filled diet companies to keep swindling people out of their hard earned dollars. Another excuse, that’s all.

I would have to say that obesity being caused by a virus is just B.S. Thought there clearly are people who gain fat easier then most. I can even use myself as an example. I ate a lot of junk when I was a kid and drank a lot of junk, and I got fat to lose because of it.

But I know lots of people that ate way more than I did and continue to do so and are thin. Its not like I didn’t get any exercise when I was a kid either. I think what it really comes down to is learning how your body reacts with different foods. Some people just never get the hint and continue to grow at a self destructive rate.

You all read an “E-zine” so you’re all so much more informed than these petty “scientists” and their silly open minds. They’re not saying all fat people are only fat because they have a virus, they’re saying that SOME people have a virus that makes them fatter than they’d normally be.

A whole lot of ignorance in this thread

This virus makes fat cells from stem cells, right? Well, did you know that unfilled fat cells would send signals to the brain to eat more and fill them up?

My point is that obesity isn’t just about being lazy. There are biological factors as well that have a profound effect on the body whether the brain likes it or not.

So if this virus increases fat cells that would signal the brain to gorge on food, either that person will suffer from being fat or suffer from constant unsatisfied cravings.

I hope you guys don’t get infected.

Signal schmignal. Self will has a role as it does in everything. There is no excuse. [/quote]

You vastly underestimate the power of biology on the mind.

Yup. All that fat has to come from somewhere, but take note that a person with more fat cells will have a bigger appetite than a person who has less, so not overeating for a guy with lots of fat cells is gonna be tough.

Thing is that anyone who was fat at some point will have excess fat cells that have since been emptied out - and my point is that they keep the fat off with self control and discipline.

Just because the tank is big doesn’t mean you have to fill it to the top.

Yeah, but like I said, unfilled fat cells will signal the brain to eat more. It’s gonna a be a struggle for one unfortunate to have many unfilled fat cells. They won’t get fat, but they’ll have to deal with the unnecessary and maladaptive cravings.

60% of the nation do not have thyroid problems. They have issues passing up the drive through.

Maybe when some of you get older and deal with the food cravings of your pregnant wife, you’ll understand a little better the biological imperative that can be placed on an individual.

What I hear right now is a bunch of young people crowing about how good they are doing themselves.

Now, once again, nobody is saying this has anything to do with ALL fat people, but if true, it would probably help some small percentage of people who have trouble dropping weight.

"Pasarica emphasized that it’s not yet been proven that Ad-36 actually causes obesity. Even if that does turn out to be the case, not all people who are infected with the virus will inevitably pack on the pounds.

Funded by the NIH, Pasarica’s current effort focused on the impact of Ad-36 viral infection on fatty tissue extracted from adult male and female liposuction patients.

Stem cells can develop into a variety of cell types. In this study, the researchers obtained adult stem cells from the tissue samples and then infected half of the cells with the virus. The cells were allowed to grow in culture for about a week.

By the end of that period, most of the infected cells infected with Ad-36 had developed into so-called “pre-fat” cells, but the uninfected cells did not.

The more virus they inserted into the cells, the greater the fat growth observed, the researchers said. This effect was evident among tissue taken from both men and women.

In addition, the virally-exposed pre-fat cells were found to collect fat at a faster than normal rate, resulting in a double-whammy effect – more, and bigger fat cells.

The team was also able to identify a particular gene in the Ad-36 virus – known as E4Orfl – that appears to be directly responsible for the promotion of fat growth. The identification of this gene provides a target for future anti-obesity therapies, the team said.

Exactly how the virus might cause obesity remains unclear. The researchers are also unsure of the length of time the virus might remain in infected patients and how long its effects continue even if it is eradicated.

Pasarica said much more research is needed to explore all these questions.

Dr. Barbara B. Kahn, chief of the division of endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, said the findings were still “inconclusive” and not a license to overeat.

“The bottom-line on the viral thing is it’s very intriguing, (and) it definitely deserves more investigation, but while it may be a contributing factor, it’s certainly not going to explain the majority of obesity in our society,” said Kahn, who is also a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

“In general, to become obese there has to be some sort of mismatch between energy intake and energy expenditure,” she noted. Again, that gets back to the same old advice: Eat healthfully and exercise regularly to keep weight under control."

i do not trust studies - almost any outcome can be manipulated to ‘prove’ a point. 97 million people infected with this virus - got fat? and more coming down the pike?

given the current growing obesity problems in other countries, this virus must be pretty virulent.

and so it comes back down to obesity being contagious, be it from your friends or having been exposed to this virus…whatever happened to people being responsible and accountable for themselves?

What I hear is a very defensive stance on an issue that can be controlled by diet and excercise, and on an excercise/supplement forum!

Giving excuses for fat asses to be fat is stupid. Is this just an american virus? Why are other nations not suffering?

What does age have to do with self restraint? If anything, shouldn’t self restraint become stronger as age sets in? Or is that a poor attempt at discrediting posters who state diet and excercise control weight?

Diet and excercise do control weight unless you are one of the tiny few who actually has a thyroid issue yes?

Validating fat assery by validating a caving in to cravings is horse shit. Call it a virus, a gene deficiency, a weakness what have you. A craving is a craving. We all experience them.

Everybody craves unhealthy food. Everybody has to deny their own cravings. If you don’t, you’ll be a fat ass with no one to blame but yourself.
