But it does make economic sense. If they don’t provide enough value to pay for all the tax payer funded program and facilities they use, we are still at a net loss. I am a Contactor here in Az. The Illegal immigration issue is a blister on the ass of the working man. I know a lot of good Mexican people, some legal and some not. The illegal element drives down wages considerably, these people do not carry Insurance, they do not file for appropriate permits nor do they pay taxes. Now for some one that has to do all those things. They can make more money and charge the customer less. . It is bad for business. I know a lot of capable craftsman from Mexico. But over all there work is shoddy. Go to Mexico and see for your self. Nothing is ever completed; as soon as it is functional it is done. I will say one of the best tile setters I have seen is Mexican. The best wood workers are from Eastern Europe

In my case they were working under my umbrella and I was under my master’s. I’ve never witnessed an illegal immigrant blowing out a ground-up, or a remodel. It never affected us because we were moving so much volume. I’ve seen plenty of landscapers/handymen but that’s a completely different trade than mine. In that scenario I could see how they would definetly have a negative impact on wages. If your bid is at 500 and they come in at 200, that could cost you a job. Yet again, stupid customers don’t get the fact that they get what they pay for and thats when we swoop in and rip them a new one trying to fix the mess the other guy left behind. I’ve seen true masters at wood working coming from Mexico. Finish work so flawless that when we paid him we doubled what he agreed to work for. I have no clue what the construction standards are in Mexico, but when they come to the US and work for us they build to our standards and to CA code.
As for literally breathtaking woodworking I agree with carpenters coming out of Europe. We had a house that we threw a couple hand made spiral stair cases in because the customer requested it. German guy master with 2 Mexican (what did you expect?) apprentices. As soon as we blew out the exterior, he wanted the job deserted so nobody would steal his trade secrets. The work was truly worthy of awe and not cheap. Any ethnic group has the potential of putting out highly-skilled workers, all they need is a master willing to teach them the craft.
