Oats In Shake = Stomache Issues

Hi all,

I’ve been adding blended, uncooked oats into my shake in the morning and I’ve been experiencing a lot of gas about 4 hours later. I am not a very gassy guy, so I’m wondering if eating the oats uncooked is too hard on my digestive system for some reason.

My shake is usually milk, whey protein, oats (I use 3 scoops using the protein scooper), flax oil, and frozen fruit (strawberries, blueberries, or a banana).

Anyone else ever experience stomache problems from oats? Should I build up a tolerance by slowly adding more? I guess you can’t add mushy cooked oats in a shake?

Thanks guys

you could add in cooked oats…it’s just going to heat up your whole drink and probably make it taste weird…try it see if the warmth affects you.

I typically eat cooked oats for breakfast and I have also had uncooked oats in yogurt or cottage cheese and don’t have problems with either, but I have never mixed up that much stuff in a shake before. So, it could be the fact that they are mixed in with other things, it could be the fact that they are uncooked, or your body may just not like oatmeal…

I’ll have to try adding cooked oats, but doesn’t sound very appealing…I wish I could just like eating oats. eeechhh

I also used to eat oats raw in my shakes. My farts smelt like shit for 2 months. I just decided I should stop.

If you can’t stomach oats…DON’T EAT THEM! Simple as that. Sounds like you have an intolerance to them, which isn’t good. I used to get the hurtful feeling too.

I’ve run into so many people who force themselves to eat oats, despite hating it or feeling like crap after they eat them. All because they all assume it’s some magical carb source. Well…it really isn’t.

Try sweet potato. That’s always the first starchy carb I suggest to people who ask.

I felt fine, my farts smelt like burnt ass though.

That’s the thing, other than a lot of stinky farts, I feel good. No stomache pain or diahrea/constipation. I can definately feel and see a difference in my muscles when I consistently blend them in the morning, cuz I just don’t like eating when i wake, and usually just settle for whey protein in milk. Problem is, having stank ass at work is a bit of a problem. Is 3/4 of a cup of raw oatmeal a lot? How much do you guys put in yours? Still have to try putting in cooked oats.

The milk might be giving you the gas. If I drink a tall glass of milk I will usually get gassy an hour or two later.

I feel bad for you guys that can’t eat oats, cottage cheese, drink milk etc.

Don’t feel bad for them, feel bad for the people around them.

I used to drink around a gallon of milk a day, it isn’t the milk.

Knock on wood, I do just fine with milk… I don’t drink a gallon a day though. wow

LOL. Exactly. Who cares if you get gas? Let em rip!

Could be the combo of all the grain fiber from oats & the pectin fiber from the berrys & banana, causing some fermentation in the gut. If there’s no pain or other issues then gas, screw it man, like thedude said “let em rip!”
