Quick question. I throw in a handful of Quaker Oats into my morning Metabolic Drive shake, as well as a spoonful of Benefiber. Is this worth doing for carbs in the morning? If not, what should I be throwing in my shake? I also put a half of Banana in there, for thickness. Should I not mix them? Thoughts welcome.
With the oatmeal, if it is working for you and you do not exhibit the above listed symptoms of poor digestion continue. If you do, You may consider quinoa.

So… after reading thru a lot of stuff, im still wondering if oatmeal is good or bad??
Positive?
Negative?
So… Who’s FOR and who’s AGAINST?
There is another “Food: good or bad?” thread floating around and maybe more.
My first instinct was to post a smartass response (because that’s why I get paid the big bucks).
But seriously, I don’t know how anyone, at face value, can answer this question without the context of their goals, exercise regime, body comp, and how they generally react to certain types of foods (like the Poliquin and other refs laroyal posted).
I don’t see how any whole food can be inherently universally “good or bad”. Oatmeal is oatmeal. If you are tolerant to carbs (and, really, if you’re not) and are trying to gain mass, then I don’t see why oatmeal can’t be part of your diet if you like it.
Ditto with losing weight. Many people have lost fat with oatmeal in their diet. Granted, they probably weren’t eating tubs of it a day, but it has a place, like apples and milk and even (gasp!) glucose has a place.
Personally, I don’t eat a lot of it, but I love it and it does have a place in my goals, and I’m the kind of dude who bloats up just thinking about carbs (my pants are getting tighter as I type).
Sometimes I think these types of threads fuel the misconceptions that certain whole foods are at face value, bad. ("Well I (mis)-read that Poliquin said… and (mis)read that CT said…). I think that most would agree that there is absolutely no place in our diets for mass quantities of trans-fats.
That’s not a dig on the OP, just a reminder that these kind of conversations must include context, goals, and individuality.
zraw, what Poliquin actually said is he doesn’t like oatmeal because of the following, a large quantity of people in the world carb intolerant, meaning that they feel sleepy after carbs and that they can add fat quickly. This is because there are populations who haven’t adapted to carbs as their ancestors were hunters or whatever. Read the Men With Sensivity article, as it will help no matter if you are insulin resistant or not. But you are probably worrying to much. Do the tests I told you, look at the symptoms laroyal gave you and see if oatmeal suits you.
Quinoa is great but the taste is horrible.
Jesus fucking Christ, it’s fucking oatmeal! I’m known by my family and friends to over analyze everything, but even THIS is beyond me! Oatmeal…holy shit!
It’s better than Frosted Flakes, it’s high in fiber, and I’ve never heard of anyone dying or getting fat from eating too much real (non-sugary) oatmeal. Don’t eat 7 bowls a day, but then again…don’t eat 7 bowls of any particular food a day, or you’ll probably develop an allergy to it!
I’m starting to see why some of the vets get pissed off around here…

lmao you should fucking read a bit more around here I think ?! Both CT and Poliquin talked about oatmeal in a hmmmm… negative way?

If you are not allergic to it it is not an issue, if you are and the symptoms listed apply to you it is impeding your progress. An allergen is treated as an infection and your body must put forth energy to rid itself of it.
Again, if you are not allergic to it Oatmeal is great and I know Polliquin would agree with that, if you are…ditch it.
I just posted a question in this forum about possible blood sugar probems. But I have 3 packets of plain instant oatmeal and about 1 hour and 30 minutes later I cannot stay awake.

Also how can you tell if you are insulin resistant, and what kind of test can you do to prove this?
This is a good topic lets keep it going.
not sure how big of an issue this actually should be. like any other food it comes down to how your body tolerates it. personally i eat oatmeal with my eggs in the morning on non-workout days and i find it gives me a good pumped feeling for the rest of the day. and when i do eat it i feel i dont get the carb craving later in the day.
oatmeal + some protein powder + mixed berries is also fucking delicious so i just dont see you going wrong.
and even if the authors from this site have negative feelings towards it, their word is not final and im sure with them or any other author or researcher you would be able to find many points that you would disagree with from a scientific or personal resoning basis

Allergic to oatmeal, not really. If you have a problem with eating a lot of oatmeal you are probably insulin resistance. Two kinds of tests. Eat tons of it in the morning. If you feel sleepy cut down oats, if you feel good oatmeal is definetly for you.
The more precise and scientific way is to take your skinfold, if the are all under 12 for instance and your subscapular skinfold is 18 then you are insulin resistant, cut down carbs, if your subscapular… is low you can eat a lot of carbs. There you have it, take these tests and see whether you can eat a lot of oatmeal or not.
Still, oatmeal is awesome, even if your insulin resistant still eat it, just cut it down.
If you are insulin resistant see an article here in T-Nation: Men With Sensivity (2008). Really read it, its gonna help a lot.
Do you have a link to this article, I searched and couldn’t find it.
Chainsaw very important issue, after insulin is taken care, both fat loss and muscle gain are alot easier. I am gonna give you two articles about it.
http://www.T-Nation.com/article/bodybuilding/question_of_strength_june&cr= - Poliquin
http://www.T-Nation.com/article/diet_and_nutrition/men_with_sensitivity&cr= - J Marion
The tests I gave are valuable but not be all end all, if you actually are carb intolerant read tons of poliquin and apply the concepts from these two articles. Really read those, they help big time
Oatmeal will always be part of my breakfast. Until theres hard evidence relating it to cancer or muscle loss it will stay like that.
People need to stop over analysing stupid things like whether to eat oatmeal, and focus on their diet for the rest of their week, and how hard they train.

Wow, 2 coaches talked “negatively” about oatmeal and now we should run and hide and follow the leader. I stand by my post. Seriously, it should be obvious that you are allergic to something, you shouldn’t eat it.
On a different standpoint, if you consume oatmeal for breakfast, is there a limitation to how much fat you should consume since you’re consuming carbs?
Would mixing oatmeal, whey and natural PB (an equal amount of C,P and F) be negative for fat loss?
I’ve always read to have meals consisting of either P and C, or P and F, not F and C together.

there is nothing stupid about eliminating food allergies/sensitivities unless you like feeling miserable
This is a Massive Eating principal, I think it comes from Berardi but Im not sure so i wont quote. You should be low at fats in the mornin and higher at carbs.
Don’t need to worry to much about that when you re in a fat loss diet, try to make your meals balanced. Eat fruits only for breakfast. To lose fat your calories should be under maintainence, no need to bust your head over the ideas you put up.

you should at least ask yourself a question like : “why are some top coaches saying such things?”
else, why the fuck are you reading articles here?

100% agree on both your posts.
I still am not sure where you come up with either Poliquin or Thib talking “negativly” about oatmeal?!?!? They both simply state that a good number of people may infact be allergic to it and if you are allergic to it or ANY food it does not make sense to include it in your diet. Aside from the obvious feeling like a bloated flesh envelope stuffed full of fart, you will not properly absord nutrients, and the cortisol response an allergen causes would be detrimental to your progress, remember cortisol breaks things down. How could anyone in their right mind say “I don’t care, I’ll still eat it” that just doesn’t make a bit of sense to me? Don’t cut it out if you are not allergic to it, again as I previously stated there are numerous benefits to it, but if you do have the food allergy to it you won’t get the benefits from it. Everyone knows if you sit a pill of vitamin c on top of your head it won’t help you out, why because it doesn’t get absorbed! Well, eating somethng you have a food allergy to would be equally effective, and pointless!
