Nordic Blood: Climbing And Lifting / Lifting And Climbing

Can’t go wrong with SVR as your fallback plan.

Another vote for SVR II. I declared it to be my default 5/3/1 program whenever I felt the need to train 5/3/1…and then promptly ran Deep Water and never looked back, haha.

I’ve been re-reading Forever, and also think I’d be game for the BBS 3 month challenge sometime when weight gain is a goal.

Thanks for chiming in!

BBS: 10 sets of the same exercise would not mesh well with how I am wired.

BBB was more fun for the duration that I did it. But, in general I’ve found that I enjoy borrowing some of sets that’s normally reserved for BBB/BBS/FSL/SSL to do another compound lift but that then there three original 531 sets become too little for me to find my groove.

Forever is such a great book.

It’s actually 13 sets, haha. What appealed to me was how much assistance work I’d be able to get in with so many main and supplemental sets. And having to reach 80% for 10x5 at the end would really force me to eat big.

Oh yeah totally, but here’s how my damaged brain works: if nothing changes its “the same”, if anything changes its different. That’s why I can do a lot of sets if I’m doing waves or contrasts but straight sets just zap me if kept up for more than five sets. Exception being 6x2.

I’ve contemplated rotating the movement within the workout like I’ve done with some pressing and squat workouts. Something like, start the presses with an axle, next set log, next set trap bar, back to axle for the 4th set, etc. Would require the knowledge of a lot of different TMs though.

I’ve used 2 different movements like this for these sets, turns it from 10 sets to 5 sets in my mind. I didn’t calculate a TM for the alternate movements though, I did it by feel.

I did continuous ramps for a while, so like BTN Press → Press → Push Press. It does however take one pretty far away from maximal lifting on the last exercise which is not necessarily ideal.

Zercher → Front Squat → Back Squat was a ramp that notably made me less adept at dealing with what was to me relatively heavy weights on the back squat because I’d not have enough juice left over to actually go heavy. But it did improve all the other lifts in the sequence.

Yeah, I’d stick with movements that are closer together in terms of weight and movement pattern for that very reason, unless it was a complete and total off season sorta situation. That, or a period of fat loss, like what I’m doing now using dips and BtN press as my supplemental work for pressing. For squats, I’d do more barbell to SSB, and press would be changing the implements themselves.

I’d love to have access to a SSB. It’d do my elbows a great good.

I love doing AMRAP Dips (1+1/2 reps) followed by AMRAP push-ups and then hold in the bottom. It’s my go-to after press/bench if in a hurry. 3 sets is perfectly adequate.

For me this is the perfect ramp but I have to switch zercher and front squat ahahah (130, 145+, 155+)

About your elbows, have you tried switching to high bar? I did it last year and boy, finally my wrists and elbows felt good. Did my quads some good as well. If you prefer low bar, try the Talon grip, it’s the one I’m using one, and it indeed feels better.

Mine are almost comparable, zercher and front that is. So it’s a strange ramp.

Well, no. Low-bar feels like where its at for me. Eventually I’ll use high-bar as an assistance lift (for the quads) but right now I’m managing to target my flaws better with other options.

Really, my elbows are usually fine on squats but I have some medial epicondylitis that would’ve healed quicker if I could’ve done SSB squats. Climber’s elbow. Literally.

It was nice to see some life in this log today. Thanks friends!

I guess it’s all about structure (sorry I don’t have the word, I’m drunk). My long legs/short torso + slight kyphosis make the front squat very hard for me, but with the Zercher or the back squat, leaning a bit forward is okay. With the FS you have to be very upright. So my upper back fails first.

Try the talon grip for your low bar, really, it helps a lot. I feel you, I often have little tendonitis becquse of work + frail joints in général

We have the same build!

I’ll try. Can you still grip like bloody murder?

Well then you have a stronger upper back and I have strong arms

Oh yes. It’s a regular grip but you put the pinky under the bar

Talon grip is great. Feels just so natural and fluid in a way.
