Nordic Blood: Climbing And Lifting / Lifting And Climbing

Don’t know. On upper-body compounds my bar speed breaks down first, while on lower-body compounds my form is compromised before bar speed. Haven’t done much in the way of max testing.

Yes, I think that’s right. I felt like we were both making generalizations in one way or another that it would be laughable.

Haha, an unfortunate reality. The Internet is an interesting place. Not only because

grafik

is for better or worse all too common on the Internet (mostly for the worse, I think). But it’s so much more limited. Of course, I can’t hear your tone and speed of voice or observe your body language. Then the barrier to entry on forums is so low that it can be easy to write in the moment, unlike writing in a book that undergoes so much review before it is live.

The world became well-acquainted with Sweden’s strategy, though I was unaware of a petition. I don’t mean to give anyone a pass, but it is difficult to handle a pandemic “well.” Unless New Zealand, haha.

It’s a hard pill to swallow for some, if they ever realize that. Policy and science are not in harmony. I’m not saying science is right all the time, but the dichotomy can be funny and pathetic. While it may seem I previously denigrated PhDs, I think you would agree that society’s lack of trust in academic expertise is also dangerous. Expertise can be good and bad.

Body language can cut both ways. I struggle immensely with not fidgeting and maintaining eye contact which for most is perceived in a very specific way. This doesn’t change regardless of how invested I am in the topic. I have found workaround though, like looking straight through a person giving the impression of eye contact. Actually got to showcase this “skill” over dinner today as it became a topic.

Glad it stayed local, it was embarrassing enough as it is without the global public eye.

I would. Overall, my biggest beef with the educational system here is that it does not reliably produce critical people willing to think for themselves. And while being a critical self-thinker isn’t adequate in and of its own to increase trust in academic expertise I envision that a school system that focuses on ensuring that graduates do possess such skills might also be more geared towards instilling knowledge to navigate society as it evolves and changes and thus would frame meaningfully what it means to have such specialist knowledge. And, consequently spend less time on informing how we believe ancient civilizations worked. A cursory overview should be adequate, and still expose people to enough nuance (I hope) that they can discover what their interests are and what they themselves might desire to pursue academically (if anything).

Too much emphasis has been placed on exhibiting the momentary possession of certain knowledge. I’ve forgotten a lot of material, even about things that I am interested in, I am however primed to fill those gaps in my know how if I’m significantly motivated.

Pertinent XKCD, excellent choice. I think about that one sometimes when I come across topics here deciding if I should engage or not.

Congrats on the PR, it looks very solid, certainly way prettier than mine!

Also blue belt master raaaaace (and nice hair!)

Before I read your last sentence I was also thinking that this is very much a skill, one at which I am not very good. I finished a great book recently that said this about writing:

I wonder if people like me, whose voices in real life are so unreliable, are drawn to writing because it lets us rework our words until they fall well. We like the idea of letting sentences speak in our place. These sentences turn out to be brave and unflinching in ways that we are not. They come to stand in not just for our voices but for our gait, tread, gestures, shrugs and bodily tics – all the unsatisfactory ways we take up space in the world.

Might not be any consolation, it seems other countries are doing even more embarrassing things.

Yes, this is a huge part of what I think constitutes a quality education. I suspect the problem is widespread.

Lack of trust in some areas also persists because it clashes with people’s values and economic interests. People cherrypick certain topics they do not even want to acknowledge, even if they do not reject science as a whole. It’s funny because, as Carl Sagan says, “We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology.”

Do you have any ideas as to how to teach and instill that? I have some ideas about situations that could drive and foster it. Somehow, I believe it can be learned while simultaneously imagining that being such an individual is value driven.

I can share some thoughts I have later but I wouldn’t want to poison your opportunity to reply here.

I don’t write this to nitpick, I only desire to improve my language skills, but wouldn’t it be “Carl Sagan said” seeing as he is dead?

Not my best performance at these weights, I think. But I didn’t use a belt on my top-set. Just got through this one quick.

Tried dips. Mostly pain free. Hoping up into the rings didn’t always feel very stable, so for now I’ll keep this exercise on this week to not regress in my shoulder restoration. Have decreased significantly in my ability here. Used to be double digits weighted. Should make for some easy wins the coming cycles.

Poundstone curls, fuck. Started pausing at the bottom and had to abandon that for pausing at the top to ensure I’d get the reps. Glad I had pulley protection rings to protect my tweaked fingers.

I don’t know why but Dips are probably the movement that has the most variance in terms of rep capability

Like last week I did 25, this time I did 14 and I was dying

The solution: rebuild my shoulder until I can do 100 a day

I did my first set of these yesterday and agree with “fuck”, it was the only biceps work I did and I’m sore today. That may speak more to my lack of work over the past few months but still… Did you use an axle or a regular barbell?

Bagsy is using the historic(al) present tense, which is a valid way of writing. I wouldn’t be surprised if a few style guides objected to it in certain cases but I doubt any completely disavow it.

This too is related to viewing education as a means to an end much more than anything else. I think earlier and earlier specialization amplifies that attitude. It’s not surprising, as career prospects scare people here, especially as more young people are drowning in debt. So, some people think that becoming very good at something, at the expense of nearly everything else, is somehow “safer.” But even from a non-economic standpoint I don’t think early specialization is good.

It’s only the Internet. Go for it.

Haha, yes, “said” would have been literally more accurate there. But I don’t feel like the present tense is necessarily wrong. It’s almost suggesting his voice lives on, even if we know he is dead. When I discuss a book written by a deceased author, I usually use (Author Name) says that " . . . "

I’m sure there are other English native speakers who disagree with me though.

Oh yeah, thirded. That’s not a real word.

Still confident I inspired growth.

This is some serious squatting there…

I’ll have to do this again sometimes… But straight bar isn’t great for my elbow

You have the whole gym to yourself or what?

Nice that you were able to push pretty hard on both sets. How painful was that for your hamstring? Also, your squats look a lot like mine. Especially in the first video hahaha

Killing it!

That is some serious mental toughness right there mate. Love it.

Haven’t logged in a while. But keep hitting it. Visited an outdoor gym this morning. Ran a 10k in 40 minutes this afternoon. 6 km in forty minutes.

Earlier since my last log entry I hit deadlifts after a shitty phone call and did my main work and some rehab rather than a full sesh because of being elsewhere in my mins, had a good pressing session another day where I forgot rings so did inverted rows on a barbell. Poundstone curls felt not as horrible as last time so I wonder if I got too lazy with the eccentric.

In other news: Can still hold a back lever.
