No Promises This Time

Athletics has always been my favorite and was looking forward to some records falling. Have to see the affect of no fans.

So the mail comes and I get an invitation to the ā€œSouthCentral District Senior Olympicsā€., Oct 11-15. This is a qualifying meet for next years Tennessee Senior Olympics. I usually don’t have to qualify for various reasons but since all meets were canx last year everyone has to qualify again. I’ve got til 31 August to register so I’ll start practicing. The way the virus is kicking up again hard to tell when I’ll get back to the PI.

Watched that last night. Was really hoping the Aussie would get a medal but he ended in 4th.

Got in some dojo time and a 1500m swim this morning. And for the first time since 1932 the US has taken the Women’s discus in the Olympics. On her first throw in the finals Valerie Allman threw a 68.98m (226’ 4"), good enough to win it all.

I watched. She was very impressive.

She originally trained as a dancer and you can see it in the way she moves. Especially her recovery after the release.

Wanted to throw more but the shoulder gave me a little knudge saying ā€œwe’re 66, dummyā€. Could not, not throw today. After watching Ryan Crouser win the shot and making over 23m the new normal just had to get out and throw. Took the throws 30+ years to get back to where they should be progressing to. I hought performances would be off with the lack of crowds but I was wrong.

I get the impression that people who throw, throw simply because they love it and not because someone’s watching.

So true. In most venues the hammer and javelin are outside the stadium because of the distances thrown. Not a lot of people take up the throws for the fame and fan adulation that comes with the events. Can’t count the number of times I’ve heard, ā€œyou throw a hammer, like a claw hammer?ā€

Yesterday - swim and run
Today - power cleans, right below knees - 45wu, 135 x 6, 155 x 5, 175 x 4, 195 x 3, 215 x 1 x 3
First time trying what I think is the ā€œone arm lumberjack pressā€. Bar in the corner, pressing the other end with one hand. Tried to get the angle, 35-40 degrees, elbow high, right hand reversed. Not a lot of success. Need a longer bar or a different set up. Once I got the the 25 and above weights on the bar it just wasn’t simulating the shot throwing action I wanted. Wieght hit me in the chest. I tried.
Sng arm db push/press - (r) 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 x 1, (l) 40 x 10 x 2
rear delt machine - 60,70 x 15. 80 x 12
face pulls (rope) 50, 60 x 15, 70 x 12
hammer curls - 35 x 12, 40 x 10, 45 x 8
reverse curls - (ez bar) - 50 x 15, 70 x 10, 90 x 8
Chocked this up to a experimenting day. Changing over to my throwing prep lifting routine but getting the nagging feeling we may be going back into shut down mode again. Wait and see.

Could you do the lumberjack press from kneeling?

Gonna try that. Think I’ll have to go to using a more conventional hand/elbow position instead of trying to mimic the shot put release position.

Had my annual Medicare covered Wellness Appointment today (that do make me feel old). Had to fill out beaucoup paperwork. All kinds of stuff like ā€œdo you have smoke detectors in your houseā€ " handrails on stairs", in addition to the normal medical questions. Lots about falling down, getting dizzy, depressed (don’t write ā€œnot until I started doing this paperworkā€. Nurses have no sense of humor.) Finally go back to the office and the nurse tells me 3 words to remember. Then gives me a piece of paper and tells me to draw a clock with the time at 11:10. Does my stats: 122/75 BP, 61 pulse, ht 6’1 1/2" (186cm) (I lost 1/2 an inch over the last few years! ā€œI’m melting!ā€) wt 215 (97.52). Then asks me to tell her the 3 words. Finally the doctor comes in, tells me ā€œyou did very well on remembering the words and drawing the clockā€ Really thought he was gonna pat me on the head and give me a damn gold star for a minute there. Goes over everything on the sheets I filled out. No meds, only OTC ibuprofen every now and then. Felt like I should have made up some stuff. He did perk up when he saw I does take a sip and smoke a cigar occasionally. Gave him something to lecture on. Listens to my breathing, heart. Conclusion: "Mr Love you are very healthy for all the injuries your body has suffered (sounded like he was taking about my truck.) Please keep doing what ever you’re doing.ā€ Next month do the blood work stuff. Don’t know if I can stand the wait.
