NIN 2013 Tour

So, as some of you may know, I am a HUGE fan of Nine Inch Nails. I plan on seeing them perform in Golden Gate Park in August at the Outside Lands Music and Arts festival. Trent Reznor has also released the tour dates for their new tour in support of their new album. Not sure when the album comes out yet.

For various reasons, I’ve never had a chance to see NIN in concert so I’m excited for this August. Anyone else from the T-Nation planning on seeing them this summer or fall?

I love Reznor’s music, too, so I don’t see why this thread can’t also be an ode to all that is NIN. It’s a shame that there aren’t more artists like him out there. I love how he makes the audio tracks from a lot of his albums, including (I think) all of the audio tracks from The Slip and Ghosts I-IV, for fans to download and create their own unique remixes with, along with the ability to upload their remixes back onto the NIN website for other fans to listen to. I downloaded The Slip from his website for free as well, something that I think more artists in position to do so should do.

Hell, with those old fucking geezers, The Rolling Stones, wheeling themselves out on stage each night right now for about $500 a ticket, I’m even more appreciative of musicians like Reznor who make music and then do whatever is feasible to get it out there to as many fans as possible without charging an arm and a leg for it. But that’s neither here nor there. Besides, I think this new album is being released through Columbia Records, unlike his last two albums.

I also think it’s a shame that there aren’t more artists like him out there in terms of dedication to their craft. I’ve gone on several rants about the sad, static, boring state of hip-hop music over the last ten years or so, and I think Reznor is a guy that hip-hop producers could take a cue from when it comes to producing beats that sound fresh and unique. The drum track from Demon Seed on The Slip is a great example of an odd-time beat that still grooves in its own unique way.

And if there is a more polyrhythmic yet melodic artist out there, I haven’t heard them.

So how about it, NIN fans? What are your thoughts on the upcoming tour? Excited? Planning to go? What do you like about Reznor’s music? What are your favorite tunes of his?

I heard the news on sat radio a couple days ago. I was going to mention it to you but figured you knew already.

I saw them on the downward spiral tour, excellent show. I tell you, I would not want to be one of his instrument techs. He had a couple fits during the show because of problems and just laid into them lol. I also heard it was going to be a whole new lineup for this tour. His guitarist for the show I was at looked ten feet tall and really moved around. If the prices are reasonable I might go again.

I think the fits directed at the tech guys were probably the result of massive drug use. He was really into heroin and cocaine and booze back then. He’s been sober for a while now, I think about ten years.

I don’t know what the prices are like for the tour, but the concert I’ll be seeing them at is not cheap. Tickets are about $260, but it’s a three-day festival with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Paul McCartney, Jurassic 5, The Heavy, Pretty Lights, Willie Nelson, Fishbone, Hall and Oates and about 20 bands I’ve never heard of. NIN is headlining one of the nights. I assume that the Chili Peppers and Paul McCartney are the other headliners.

What’s your favorite album by NIN? Mine is The Fragile. It used to be the Downward Spiral, but I’ve really gotten into The Big Come Down, Where Is Everybody, Into the Void, The Fragile, Please, La Mer and No You Don’t over the last few years. I thought that The Slip was a pretty good album, especially since I had been pretty disappointed in Year Zero.

The Fragile hands down DB. I drive to work most days with my i-pod on random. There’s so many NIN songs in there a day doesn’t go by I don’t hear them.

I think my favorite is With Teeth just for the consistency.

Really love The Heavy’s tune Short change hero, although it is starting to get overplayed.

Fucking a chick to NIN’s “Closer” is pretty legendary.

Fucking a chick to ANY tune is pretty legendary. But “Closer” is definitely at the top of the list for me. When there was that thread a while back about fuck songs I think I made about 20 posts that were all NIN tunes.

Nothing like watching some chick’s eyes bulging out of their sockets while your fingers are wrapped around her throat and that sexy look of terror mixed with excitement and lust crawls across her face and “Mr. Self Destruct” playing in the background.

I listened to a song from each album driving into work and now I’m not so sure lol. The drumming on With Teeth is really good.

I will definitely be going to see NIN in November. Trent Reznor is a musical god. With Teeth has been my recent favorite, but I’m always listening to Pretty hate machine when I lift.

Yeah! Dave Grohl drummed on about half of those songs. The Collector is probably my favorite tune off that album and features some really nice drumming by Grohl, playing basically a 13/16 groove. 3/4, 3/4, 3/4 and then a measure of 4/4. Fucking killer!

Just saw in rolling stone that Adrian Belew was practicing with NIN but left, saying it just didn’t work out. Too bad, he’s an amazing guitarist.

Pretty Hate Machine is one of the best albums ever made, not really too into the other albums.

The closest they are coming to Houston is San Antonio on a Tuesday night. However, Explosions in the Sky are playing the show also, so that probably makes it worth the trip.

I know this is a remix, but I LOVE this NIN song.

I didn’t know Grohl played on that album. The drum groove on the song “only” is one of the funnest to play drums along to for me. I’ve played it ten times in a row back to back over and over, feels great and it’s not overly difficult. That song you mentioned is a lot of work.

Yeah, I love playing along to Only also. I haven’t really tried to play The Collector. I gave it a couple whacks, but it takes some work.

Discipline has a great groove that’s basically a variation of that same disco beat from Only. I love the hi-hats being played only on the and beats. Gives it a great sound.

Saw 'em in '05 at the Toyota center. My only gripe is the Astros were a game away from the World Series and when NIN came on, Reznor demanded that all of the facilities bars turn off the tv’s 'cause he wanted all of the attendees attention. Other than that, it was easily one of the top 5 live shows I’ve ever seen. Think Doogie said they’re not making it to Houston, so I’ll try and clear my schedule to catch 'em in San Antone. They’re that good.

Just pre-ordered a copy of the new album, Hesitation Marks, which is rumored to be dedicated to Paris Jackson.

There are several versions of the album available; the CD, the digital download, the deluxe version (same as the regular version but w/ 3 additional remixes as well), the CD and the digital version, the CD and the deluxe digital version, or the digital version and a vinyl copy. I said fuck it and went with the vinyl copy plus digital version. The album isn’t due out until Sep. 3rd, but if you preorder any version of the album that offers a digital download of it (basically all of them except the CD-only version) you can download one of the songs right now. It’s called Came Back Haunted and sounds really good. It sounds sort of like something from With Teeth, structure-wise, as in pretty accessible and straightforward, but the music itself sounds more like something from Pretty Hate Machine. It also has an ending that sort of adds layer after layer of polyrhythms in a way reminiscent of the end of Closer, except with lyrics as well.

I also downloaded The Omen EP and Welcome Oblivion from his other band, How To Destroy Angels, featuring his smoking-hot wife, Mauriqueen Maandig, on vocals. I haven’t had a chance to listen to them yet, but I thought their self-titled debut album had its moments, so I have high hopes for these as well.
