How old are you? I didn’t really start paying attention to football until the later 90’s in my late teens.
I’m 33 and started going to games at the 'Stick in the '84 season. My first distinct memory about football that involved actually being aware of what was going on in the game was when I saw Jim Burt knock Montana the fuck out in the '86 playoffs. I was devastated and was convinced Montana was going to die.
You remember a ball game from when you were 5 or 6? I can’t remember shit-all from when I was 5 or 6. Your drug/alcohol history described in other threads must have been grossly exaggerated.
I remember everything. I’ll remember you questioning me. I remember our avatar bet, too, so don’t think I’m going to forget.

And I was 7 when Burt knocked out Montana. I even remember going to the barber with my mom earlier that week and getting my hair cut like Joe Montana.
So, one Wednesday night around 11:00 p.m., circa fall of 1991, like we usually did, me and a few buddies wondered into Panamas after our ski team meeting to enjoy a few Texas teas. The place was mostly empty, except for a few people sitting at a table tucked away in the back, kinda in the dark.

After a few teas, one of my buddies whispers, "hey, over in the corner, isn’t that Joe Montana?’ And I replied, “You mean that guy sitting next to Steve Young?” So he giggles and says, “Yeah,” “watch this.”

He was a bit in the bag, and stumbles over to their table, and points at Montana with a boyish look of wonder on his face, and stammers, “aren’t you, . . . aren’t you, . . . aren’t you, . . . Steve Bono?”

Man oh man, Montana looked pissed, but Steve Young almost fell out of his chair laughing. It was fucking brilliant.

True story.
You’re so full of shit it’s now started to spill out of your fucking mouth and onto your keyboard.

Montana would NEVER have gone out with Young for a drink, let alone at fucking Panama’s of all places. Didn’t you have any class when you went to Chico? Those with panache go to the Oasis!

The Oasis has actually turned into a complete shithole. I go there every now and then on Sundays during the NFL season because they have free pool then. There’s some half-drunk bum passed out underneath the snooker table in the back corner, the bartenders are all a bunch of whores strung out on meth, half the crowd in there are a bunch of suicidal locals and it’s now the place to go when hipsters want to be ironic.

From what I hear it used to be THE place to hang out back in the day. Most of the kids these days like to hang out at LaSalle’s or The Bear (some things never change) or this new place called The Beach, which is another overly-pretentious club that strictly caters to the students transplanted from Orange County. The Normal Street Bar closed a couple years ago and the building is still vacant.

The orchard fags still go to the Crazy Horse.

Ah, that’s cool. I was more into baseball as a kid since that is what I played. I don’t remember much from the Chargers only Super Bowl appearance against the Niners except they got smashed. That was just bad luck they made it that year because that Niners team was stacked.

I remember EVERYTHING about that game, including when the Niners put in Deion Sanders at WR with about a 75 point lead and threw him a long bomb down the right sideline that barely fell incomplete. Ricky Watters had a huge game in his last with the Niners. Once they lost Watters, it was all slowly downhill for them up right up until they signed Harbaugh. Man, those were some good years back then.

That was when the Cowboys were relevant to people other than Derek and a bunch of Mexican gangbangers. The NFC Championship Game back then was the REAL Super Bowl. The AFC didn’t have a chance between about 1984 and 1996. I started going to every Niners home game, year in, year out, back in 1990. I’ll never forget when Joe Montana came back after being injured for about two full years and played in the second half of the last game of the year, which was when the last game of the whole season was on MNF. Young was already established as the future (he was the MVP that year) but there was obviously a HUGE portion of the Niners fanbase who wanted Joe to start in the playoffs even though he hadn’t played since the 1990 Championship Game. Then he comes out and takes the Niners on three or four scoring drives against the Lions in front of the Candlestick crowd like he’d never missed a game. The place was going fucking bonkers. Grown men were crying.

Check it out on YouTube. One of the great moments in the game.

Fuck, I can’t believe the 'Stick is going to be gone after this season. Nixon once called it the most beautiful stadium in the country when he threw out the first pitch at the first Giants game there. They should have known he was a crook and a liar back then when he said it. I must have been to 150 games at that place, maybe close to 200, counting all the playoff games. And man, have there been a LOT of playoff games there. More conference Championship Games than any stadium in the history of the NFL. When that place is gone, a huge chunk of NFL history will go with it. If anyone on this site has a chance to get to a game there this year, I highly recommend going. The place is a fucking shithole, but it’s a very historic one, more historic than any sporting stadium in the country, other than maybe Fenway Park or Wrigley. Except that those places are historic due to their sheer age. They’ve housed a bunch of fucking losers for the large majority of its existence. Not Candlestick Park. Only place where a World Series game was interrupted by an earthquake. Home to the greatest living baseball player (Willie Mays) AND arguably the two greatest football players EVER (Rice and Montana), a shitload of NFC playoff games, tons of records set or broken there, and it’s the place the Beatles played their last concert.

I took back-to-back-to-back shots of Liquid Cocaine the last time I was in Joe’s and puked all over the bar about 30 seconds after the third one. I haven’t been back since.

I’ll tell you man, there are some things about Chico that have changed over the years, but in general it’s still the same good, old college town it’s always been. My dad went here back in the mid-to-late 70’s and every time he comes up to visit he just rambles on and on about how nothing has changed at all here. I love this town, even if it is perpetually economically depressed. The trees are all bigger, I suppose, but not much else has really changed. The part of campus along 2nd Street between Ivy and Normal has really changed a lot, but that’s about it. That, and the new gym on 1st and Cherry. Earl Mansion, in all it’s glory and splendor, is still there (that big, brown Victorian on the northwest corner of 3rd and Hazel), Bear Hole and Salmon Hole are still the spots to hang out at, there’s still tons of people floating down the Sac to Beer Can Beach and then on to Scotty’s every weekend (just went down the river myself a couple weeks ago), and the sluts still carry STD’s at a rate of about 1 in 5.

I had a buddy from out of town who bet a bartender at Joes she couldn’t make him puke. He “won” the bet. He didn’t puke, but it took four of us to carry him out and we just threw him in the bed of a pickup truck. I’m not sure how or why, but later that night, the truck got parked next to a lumberyard that burnt down–it got so hot his hair was all singed and his clothes smelled like smoke but he didn’t wake up while all the firetrucks tried to control the blaze. The next day, he got in his car to drive home (700 miles away) still smelling like smoke, pepper sauce, and Tequila. He later told me he picked up a hitch hiker in Red Bluff, and had the guy drive most of the way to Seattle while he slept, sweating and shivering feverishly the whole way. Good times I tell ya.

How does every other football fan change a light bulb? Oh wait, they don’t because they’re too fucking poor to afford electricity.

Ugh, Malcolm Floyd went down with an apparent knee injury today and I guess they said it looked bad. Chargers could have their number 1-2 receivers out for the year.

No replacement refs this year, remember that game where GB got robbed?

Nope.

And Rivers is as mobile as a turtle in quicksand.

May be a long season sir.

So pumped for the season to start. If you haven’t seen it, here is this year’s first episode of Hard Knocks. The whole thing is interesting but if you don’t have much time, skip to about 33:00 and watch the Oklahoma drills, it’ll get you amped

James Harrison is certifiable, he is one step away from killing everyone on the field at any time.

Isnt Robert Meacham fucked up too? I was high on Meacham when they signed him, but man hes been a waste too. Brandon Lloyd is still out there.

Meachem was worthless, so was Eddie Royal.

Luckily Floyd didn’t tear any ligaments and it’s a sprain so he might miss a little time but not the whole season.

It really doesn’t matter much if the Offensive line can’t pass protect because Rivers will just dump it off to the running backs or fumble the ball.

Brady Injured hopefully nothing serious I’m not ready for Tebow time.
