I have to save all my stamina for RajRaj over in the MLB thread. He’s a big-time sabermetrician, which is typical of baseball fans who have never actually played the game at a competitive level. He made the comment recently that 1) I would be absolutely unbearable if the Giants won the Series (I intend to prove him right) and 2) he said that understanding baseball is 95% numbers based, which is the most ignorant, uneducated thing I’ve ever heard anyone say about any sport.
So I’ve been haranguing him since the last out of Game 4. It takes a lot of energy. But I could give you a quick wall of text if you really want.
First of all, your entire evaluation of Harbaugh is totally incorrect. He’s hardly a big-mouth, not when there are guys like Rex Ryan out there. I’ve never heard Harbaugh make any sort of “big-mouthed” comment other than jumping to the defense of his players. I defy you to provide me with an example to the contrary.
Secondly, he’s a sore loser? He hasn’t lost enough in the NFL to be a loser of ANY sort yet. Besides, sore losers are the best. Classless in victory, belligerent in defeat is what I always say. I’d say that the fact they responded to their two losses this year with some seriously physical, ass-kicking football against Buffalo and the Jets and then Seattle and Arizona shows that he handles losing as well as he needs to. I would be suspicious of anyone who handled losing any better than that. Like I always say, people who are “good” losers are such because they’re also “frequent” losers and dealing with it in a constructive manner is the only option they have if they want to remain sane. Those who handle losing well are those who have gotten used to it.
I also defy you to provide me with an example of Harbaugh playing or coaching dirty. He isn’t on tape imploring his players to “touch and feel the head, hit the head” or to “kill the head so the body dies with it” and that sort of thing. He hasn’t been embroiled in any sort of cheating scandal like SpyGate and I can assure you that if he wins a Super Bowl it won’t be tainted in the way the Patriots’ Super Bowl titles are forever tainted.
Does he run up the score a little bit sometimes? Sure. But that isn’t dirty play. This isn’t baseball where there’s a shitload of unwritten rules that go back a century. The only unwritten rule in football is this: if you don’t like the other team running up the score then fucking stop them. The football season is so short that any chance you get to fucking bury the other team should be taken. It might keep that team down for a couple more weeks and it can certainly instill more confidence in your own team.
Now, regarding your “decent enough player” comment, well, I don’t really know what to say. He isn’t a player anymore but is he a “decent enough” coach? I’d say that’s the understatement of the year. He’s one of the best, sharpest minds in football and he’s clearly an excellent teacher of the game. Decent? I’d say more like one of the top 2 or 3 coaches in football at any level, college or professional.

They won in very convincing fashion. Yet another validation of the superior form of baseball that is played in the NL.

That’s a big “if.” The Giants game will be the first tough test this OL has had, and their offense has every tool in the box to make life miserable for a mediocre D like Pittsburgh’s.

I don’t understand why McLendon isn’t on the field. Dude was their best defender in the pre-season. Watching Hampton play now is painfull.
My biggest worry on the D is Clarke being hurt. Mundy is trash.
Watch them beat the Giants and lose to the lowly Chiefs lol.

I don’t understand a lot of things. Why isn’t Heyward starting? Why are they still trying to make every DL two-gap when they don’t have the personnel for it? I think that McLendon has been waved in (sparingly) every game so far, he just hasn’t made much of an impact because he’s being asked to two-gap and he doesn’t have the skill set for it. Neither does Hood, and Keisel doesn’t have any skills left at this point.
These guys could be very good if they were allowed to shoot gaps and play a more attacking style. That might result in a few more big runs, but it’s also not going to allow a team to pound you to death on the ground like just about any decent OL could right now. Hell, we might even get a little pressure on the QB from the DL if they were allowed to fly upfield. They haven’t had anyone on the DL that could pressure the QB consistently since Ray Seals.
Clark is questionable but I bet he plays.
The Steelers can beat anyone if they avoid penalties and turnovers. They can lose to anyone if they don’t.

LOL You and me both. It just pisses me off that people in there don’t automatically acquiesce to my obviously superior baseball intellect. If they would just assume everything I say in there is the Gospel According to DB Cooper then things would be different. But they just haven’t seen the light.
Regarding the Astros: I don’t think they’re totally fucked beyond all repair at all. They have a couple of talented young players already on the major league roster and I’m pretty sure they’ve got several top prospects ready to come through the pipeline here in the next couple years.
But I seriously wonder about that fucking owner of theirs. Anyone who would legitimately entertain the idea of bringing Roger Clemens onto the team, for whatever reason he cited, is a fucking loon.
Are the Niners just the most bi-polar team in the NFC or what?
Actually, I don’t think they’re bi-polar as much as the Giants just seem to have their number. They barely lost to them in November last year then beat them in the Championship Game and then they handed the Niners their fucking asses a few weeks ago.
I worry that the Giants might prove to be the Oregon University of Harbaugh’s 49ers career. He couldn’t beat Oregon, the one team he needed to in order to take the Next Step. I hope the Giants don’t fill that role as well.
What worries me is that they’ve physically destroyed every team in their path with the running game, aside from an aberration in Minnesota, but they got fucking manhandled by the Giants. Then they go out and dominate two of the most physical teams in the NFL in Seattle and Arizona (never thought I’d write that sentence and actually mean it).

I was about to correct you on Seattle and Arizona but son of a bitch youre right. The NFC West owns the word defense this year. Arizona heads to Green Bay this Sunday. If they play like they played against Jacksonville, good golly miss molly, it will be ugly.

I know. Even the fucking Rams have a good defense, although that debacle against New England certainly hurt their credentials.
I’m just going to put this right here.
I love that little page so much. It’s great.
You agree with this, Derek?
From FoxSports:
. With 83 seconds to play, the ball on the Giants’ 28 and three timeouts in its pocket, Dallas faced second-and-1 and somehow never ran the ball once to get a new set of downs.
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett had QB Tony Romo throw the ball three straight times. Two fell incomplete, the last was picked off.
You have to run the ball on third down. I don?t care if they know it?s coming. I don?t care that Felix Jones is unreliable and already had a critical fumble. Tony Boo Boo is unreliable, too. Tony Boo Boo threw four interceptions on Sunday.
Jason Garrett is an idiot.
