News Item: Oprah on the list? WTF?

Madonna Named Most Popular Fitness Role Model

Madonna, who is 43, was named the most popular fitness role model in SHAPE Readers’ Choice Awards 2002, which is featured in the August issue of the health and fitness magazine.
“It’s not really a surprise that Madonna topped the list this year,” said SHAPE’s Editor in Chief, Barbara Harris. “She’s a great example of today’s fit woman because she has a clear sense of herself and she continues to find ways to incorporate working out and staying centered into her busy lifestyle.”

SHAPE asked 5,000 readers to reveal their favorites in workouts, food, clothes, gear, and beauty products. The top five finalists in the "favorite fitness role model" category include (in order) Madonna (12.9 percent), Gabrielle Reece (8.6 percent), Jennifer Lopez (7.9 percent), Cindy Crawford (7.4 percent), and Oprah Winfrey (5.4 percent).

Oprah????

Davo: IN GENERAL, I like Oprah…BUT…

Recently she has gotten on the “be happy with who you are and how you look” Band Wagon which is usually psycho-babble for “it’s okay to stay fat and out-of-shape”…

That’s the LAST advice people (especially Americans) need…

To me, it sounds as if the first four are who the women admire or aspire to be. The last one (Oprah) is probably what they actually are.

Frankly the popular “be happy with who and what you are” appears to me to be a “I’m out of shape and am too lazy to workout so shut up” kind of attitude. Granted when I started working out awhile back it was VERY difficult to be motivated. However after several workout sessions and reaping the benefits from such it has led me on an odyssey to build a better body. I ENJOY it now and look forward to furthering gains. I’m 5’8" and was 172 pounds 2 yrs ago but unfprtunately a devestating sickness (including hormonal probs) knocked every single bit of blood, sweat, and tears I worked my ass off for; knocking me all the way down to 138 pounds :frowning: I’m now at 160 (but mostly fat) and have just begun to regain my health and on my 3 week of workouts again. As devestating a blow as it is you simply suck it up and start over. I’m not going to quit till I not only gain back what I lost but exeed my previous mark. MY chest looks awfu lat the moment (almost gyno GASP! but not really. Just too much adipose tissue). The “moral” of this story is “Get off your lazy tail and get to work!” This country has WAY too many obese people in it and could easily be remedied with a little dedication and determination. Just set realistic goals and for God’s sake stop with the excuses! (such as “just accept who you are”. A cop out if you ask me). Lastly do some research on training, diet, and of course (however LAST) supplements. T-Mag is THE place to start

You know I recall an Oprah show ym mom told me a bout (when she used to watch that show) a few years ago. This woman listed reasons she wanted ot get married. ONe of them got boos and rants however from the audience AND Oprah. She said for protection (again only NOE of many reasons). Oprah went on to critisize her in front of everyone and told her “you don’t need a man to protect you” etc etc. Then I saw her a few days later walking outside with two HUGE male bodygaurds…LOL! What a hypocrite. Now she’s not married to them obviously but that statement made it all the funnier

Lastly, frankly I don’t care what they think or anything. Not my business. But it was humorous
