I was sans girlfriend last night so I listened to the first 8 tracks on my good Sony studio headphones.
I think each song is great in its own way–I think only one of the first 8 comes close to being a “wasted” track, and given the depth, complexity and energy of songs like Vicarios, The Pot, etc., bitching about “wasted” tracks is fucking stupid.[/quote]
No one is “bitching” about wasted tracks. It is, however, a downfall of the album, IMO. Other than that, i agree with you that some of the songs are good. As a whole, i wasn’t that impressed. This is my opinion and the above is yours. There is no point in calling what someone else says in terms of musical taste “fucking stupid” because there is nothing you can do to change their opinion.

You’re absolutely right, and I feel “fucking stupid” for having said that. My apologies, it was an ugly post.
I can’t stop listening to it personally. IMO, it is a terrific mix of Lateralus and Undertow. These guys are ridiculously talented.
The thing Tool does extremely well is they make music emotional. (NOT EMO… Emotional.) They use every possible aspect of music perfectly to make you feel what they want you to feel in each song.
I for one am a huge fan of death metal, hardcore, grindcore, and just about every other form of heavy, loud, obnoxious music that employs pretty much nothing but screaming vocals, heavy distorted guitar, and blisteringly fast kick drum. But even with all of that, I don’t feel anyone can better convey hatred / anger / angst / etc than Tool can with the simple use of dynamics and true musical talent.
I give it a 9.5/10. Best CD I have heard in years.
