I teach about body shapes and associated stereotypes in one of my classes. I spend a good amount of time discussing size in particular. This association with size lacking brains is very old, in fact I think you can link it to Decartes separation of the body (inferior) and mind (superior).

Oh, no doubt. The assumption is that anyone who put that much time into their physical body must be coming up short mentally. It is the same reason they assumed blacks were “inferior” during slavery because of stronger body types and larger proportions.

In essence, it is no more complicated than the weakest among us quivering at the idea that someone could be not only more physically powerful but intellectually as well. It is a situation that can cause an inferiority complex in those susceptible.

I don’t personally know any people as dumb as the guy in that vid without being mentally handicapped and I am sure that I have never seen an advertisement that made the biggest guy in the room come across as the smartest.

People get intimidated easily and finding out the guy towering over you is smarter or any number of other potential accomplishments just makes them feel worse.

Average people have the weakest sense of self worth.

Also, apparently to look like that, you can’t hold down a real job.

So picking things up and putting them down isn’t a real job? Fuck!
What if you’re a forklift operator?
Nice!

Or a crane operator even?

I’ve actually done both of those. The difference is that you generally aren’t returning the load to the same position when you put it back down.

I’m going to open a chain of Planet Whites gyms where skinny white folk can exercise, safe in the knowledge that no large black men will intimidate them with their fancy motorbikes and immaculate teeth.

lol

Actually, thinking about it, I think they may have deceived that guy in the commercial. It looked like they were using the same clip of the same line over and over or splicing together clips from that one line but multiple takes. Like in shooting this commercial they didn’t have him say it over and over again like an idiot. Every time he says “I lift things up and put them down” the camera and the actor are in the same position, he isn’t actually saying that line in each little part of the the scene. It always cuts to him up close or he has his back turned.

I think that actor may have been screwed. If that’s the case, maybe he could sue.

you should PM HolyMac

This is why I bought my own stuff. My son unfortunately must train at what he calls L Gay fitness while at his mom’s. The heaviest deadlift he ever saw there was his. the next was 225 x 3, while wearing gloves. He pulls mid 300s at 132 btw at age 16.

At my office he’s seen 585, 650, 600, and 400+ from the four or five guys who train there.

I told him about my good ole days with my first weight set, Ted Williams Sears concrete plastic covered weights. He said back in his day when he started lifting he used a monolift and a ghr among other things. He’s a smartass.

Don’t worry everyone, I tweeted some pretty nasty comments to PF.
That should put an end to that.

That’s my mistake. I actual wasn’t aware who he was. Do to the fact he was fully clothed and videoed from the chest up I just wrongly assumed he didn’t lift.I didn’t bother checking out his site.In my own sorry defence , Most of the publications he has written for I haven’t read in at least 10 years plus.

Along with the fact that allot of his nutrition books seems to be marketed towards more towards a fitness and BB minded person. Which I’m not running down. I just haven’t been following that segment of the lifting world in a long time. But I’m sure If I mentioned Mauro Di Pasquale there would be people on this site who would not be unaware of him also. Regardless of my lack of knowledge and unfamiliarity with Mr.Brink I still find that his comments in regards to Planet Fitness where right on the mark and well said.

I wish there was one near me just for the free pizza and bagels, free PWO, hells yea!
