New Mac + Downloading Music

So after relying solely on Windows for the past 10 years, I finally switched over to a Mac. I have no fucking clue how to work the computer, but what I do know is that I need to download some music. Does anyone know any good programs that work for a mac? I was using bear share and a torrent site before with windows.

thanks a lot,

vinnie

Azureus (now called Vuze) is by far the best IMO.

Try hitting her.

Why not use iTunes?

Oh…you want to steal music instead of pay for it.

Can’t help you there.

If I could make a carbon copy of some test vials and needles, I’d do it.

This site is great for finding programs: http://www.versiontracker.com/

This is another great place for first time users: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8300945231/m/8490980035/p/1

Good luck with your new Mac.

I agree, use iTunes.

It’s a buck a song. Really, not a bad deal. Other than that, if you want to pay, you can buy MP3s on amazon for the same price.

Try to buy the DRM free music. DRM is a piece of shit that deserves to burn in hell. It gives you shitty compression and is only able to be used on certain computers.

If you look at the cost of Itunes compared to the cost of your average CD in the store, its nearly 1 dollar a song anyway. But in this case, you get to pick what songs you want and which you don’t. Should you choose to steal music and not pay, that is your discretion. Don’t complain if you have to pay the price one day.

Don’t steal music!! Musicians work just as hard as anyone else, why do they not deserve to be compensated?

Radiohead did this thing where you chose how much you paid for their album, and they were really successful with that. I read something like… 10 million dollars profit?

I could be wrong. Look it up for yourselves. lawl

Actually, the label never released the official numbers, but it was estimated that something like 8/10 people did NOT pay for it, and the remainder generally didn’t pay full price.

Also, Radiohead established their popularity through conventional means, marketing and selling music, dvds, concerts and merchandise. Also, they DID release the album on iTunes shortly after their website release, and it cost $10 to download, and people still bought it.

Try telling a band who is as of yet unestablished, but who works every bit as hard as Radiohead, that they can get away with not charging anything for their work, that by virtue of giving their album away, they will suddenly accrue a devoted million+ fanbase that will come to all their shows and buy all their merchandise, because you know, they are doing something different.

No better yet, try telling a plumber that, or a construction worker, or an IT guy, or a retail middle manager.

Try telling that to the thousands of no-name artists on Myspace doing exactly what Radiohead did, and have been doing so for years.

It would be like saying a bodybuilder who got to be 260 pounds over 20 years of eating meat, became a vegetarian, gained 10 more pounds and then started telling everyone they could make gains like his being a vegetarian.

I agree that music shouldn’t be stolen but Azureus/Vuze is great for other things too.

For us expats living abroad it allows to download and follow some TV series of films that will never be shown in our countries of (temporary) choice. Yep, not only not everything is on the ITMS but its content is different depending on where you are. In some countries they don’t even sell TV series of movies.

And then my friends, the torrent is your ally.

By the way, I rather use http://macupdate.com/ than versiontracker, a matter of tastes I guess.
