New Discovery: 'Brown Fat'

I’m more of a lurker around here and never post, but this was interesting.

Apparently we have fat that burns calories, but only if it’s cold out.

And I think it goes without saying, take it with a grain of salt.

“Every obesity drug now on the market aims at getting people to take in fewer calories, Dr. Cypess points out”

you don’t say,amazing!

I just see this new study on Brown Adipose Tissue as another excuse for lazy fucks not wanting to exercise or eat right.

I find it funny that the media pounces on stories like this every time there’s a MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH in the “obesity crisis”. Uhhh…we’ve known how to cure obesity (for 99% of the population, at least) for ages and the information is readily available online, but you’re never going to see a headline on Yahoo News that talks about real, practical nutrition are you?

Anyway…

The research is at least sort of cool. There is the potential I guess for a drug to be developed that could accelerate fat loss although I expect it would only be useful for pre-contest body builders (and even then only marginally so).

The irony of the study, of course, is that the lean proportion of the population had more brown fat than the obese!

lol Amen pzehtoeur

Brown fat does exist. It’s more of a storage site for the body in terms of regulating body temperature. In cases when its extremely cold, the body will metabolize brown fat to raise body temp a bit. I thought it was mainly used in times of extreme emergency. I believe it’s located somewhere in your posterior (back).

I’m reminded of a standup bit by dave attell: “I’ve been trying so hard to lose weight. I’ve done everything short of diet and exercise!”

The miracle would be people actually taking responsibility for their actions, admitting that their fat-fuckery might have something to do with their lifestyle. As is the case with everything else, it isn’t my fault I’m fat. And while your up could you grab me a bowl of ice cream out of the freezer?

this not new, or really relevent, it is found in most mammals, and is purely there to maintain body temp in extremely cold conditions, its located primarly in the chest cavity and upper back in humans to maintain core temp. it has a high level of mitochondria hence its brown appearence and thinner individuals have higher amounts than fatter counterparts. so, unless you are in the arctic or in extremely cold conditions for prolonged periods at low body fat levels it is rarely metabolically active to the point of thermogenesis.

also drug targeting to it is gonna be difficult as to my knowledge the only major difference to normal fat is the mitochondrial content.

if someone has a valid counter argument to my last statement fire away, I am always interested in furthering my knowledge!

don’t be surprised, it’s the microwave society

→ everything you want for yourself must happen right now

Kaizen and antman are right, it acts to regulate body temp. and is rich in mitochondria. It also contains a protein called thermogenin which acts as an ‘uncoupling agent’. It uncouples the electron transport chain from the synthesis of ATP. So instead of making ATP, you produce heat. This increases the body temp.

DNP does the same thing. It used to be prescribed as a weightloss aid, but was pulled from the market due to deaths from hyperthermia. It is my understanding that some people still use blackmarket DNP for fat loss.

To my knowledge, brown fat it is more prevalent in human infants and hibernating animals. So this study was interesting to me.
