I will also say that I will write a full length post about how wrong I was if this guy can actually bulk up enough to not look silly playing this part.
The truth is, Arnold was actually a little ‘too white’ for the part.
Thank God, while Arnold was great as Conan, yes he is a bit ‘too white.’
Agreed this guy is not THAT BAD, if he had shit-tons of muscle. Looks too High School to me.
Any ways Retard Insurance :
Conan is not a black dude either. He is mythical motherfuckers.
I grew up reading about this Freak of Nature and make no mistake that was what he was. He was not a soldier or a member of an elite fighting unit. He was Barbarian/Pirate/thief/King/slayer of demons and one of the nastest mother fuckers you will ever lay your eyes on. One of the best descriptions I ever read is below:
"Raised in the frozen wastes of war-like Cimmeria, Conan was hardened in a barbaric culture and trained from birth in all things related to kicking ass.
Amongst the most ferocious and warlike culture in the Hyborean Age, Conan still distinguished himself as a peerless warrior, earning accolades as as a fifteen year-old for his valor in combat when the Cimmerians conquered the Aquilonian outpost of Venarium, killed every soldier defending it, tore the fortress apart stone by stone and then ground up those stones into a fine powder which they then ate for dinner every night for a week.
He would go on to serve as an adventurer, thief, mercenary commander, bandit leader, military general, and fucking goddamned scurvy pirate captain.
Later in life, once he had perfected his face-stabbing and artery-severing swordfighting techniques, he put together an army of hardcore barbarian nomad mercenary motherfuckers, destroyed the armies of the mighty Kingdom of Aquilonia, strangled the oppressive tyrant King to death on his own throne and then took the crown for himself.
He went on to rule for many years and was beloved by his people for his fairness and leadership ability.
Now Conan the Motherfucking Bloodthirsty Barbarian isn’t just a clever name. He’s no John Carter of Mars - He’s not a swashbuckling, damsel-rescuing do-gooder; he’s a hard-drinking, sword-swinging, wench-groping badass anti-hero who always gets his way, who’s out almost exclusively for personal gain, and who does pretty much all of his negotiating with the business end of his trusty broadsword and a swift knee strike to the ballbag. "
This is getting stupid. Conan was also written as being a descendant of the Atlanteans…which means HIS ETHNICITY IS FUCKING MYTHICAL. Why the hell are some of you trying this hard to act like he looked like the average white guy?
LOL!!!
I have been a Robert E. Howard, era Conan reader since I was pretty young, like 9.
PX, is dead on when he says this ‘Conan is a white dude’ shit is nutz.
Actually, while I like the Arnold Conan, I was stunned when his hair was so light, compared to the original, in the shorts/novel. His tan did not seem to make him dark enough, there is a difference between having naturally darker skin, and a tan/oil. His eyes weren’t a dark enough blue either.
Reading the original Conan shit as a kid, I always picture the dude, as something that didn’t quite exist in the real world, some ancient looking type of Primordial Man, partly why Conan MUST be hyper-masculine, as Conan, is actually barely ‘human’ as compared to the hyper-masculine men of his Fantasy world, ‘over’ masculine even, to men that sounded like they came from world full of T-men.
Having grown up reading Robert E. Howard, you and X are exactly right. I think the problem is a lot of these guys have no knowledge of the original literature and are basing all their reactions and opinions on Arnold’s portrayal of the character.
Some of us do have knowledge of Robert E. Howard’s stories. We’ve also seen the iconic artwork by Frank Frazetta and Simon Bisley. And we still have problems with what you’re saying.
Howard states in The Hyborian Age that “the Gaels, ancestors of the Irish and Highland Scots, descended from pure-blooded Cimmerian clans.” The name is based on that of Cimmeria, which was once hypothesized to be the homeland of the Celtic Cymric tribe, due to the word’s similarity to the names of Celtic areas such as Cymru (the Welsh word for Wales), Cumbria, etc. Conan, a Cimmerian, has an Irish name, as do the Cimmerian gods Crom, Lir and Manannan mac Lir (gods of the sea; the latter two mentioned in Xuthal of the Dusk)
The inhabitants of fictional Cimmeria are loosely based by Robert E. Howard on the historical Cimmerians, who lived on the northern Black Sea coast in the 8th and 7th centuries BC. They also may be based on the Cimbri, a Teutonic-Celtic people. Howard endeavoured to connect the fictional peoples of the Hyborian Age with later historical groups, such as the Cimmerians (depicted as ancestors of the ancient Gaels), their hereditary enemies the Picts (compare to the Picts of eastern and northern Scotland), and Vanir (sea-roving Danes, i.e. Vikings) to the west and north respectively and their allies the Aesir (generally depicted in the Hyborian Age as a fair Nordic-type race, linked by Howard to ancient Britons and Gauls) to the northeast.[1]
So we know the Cimmerians were actually a real people in human history, and Howard used some of this as inspiration. (Very much like how JRR Tolkien used Celtic and German lore to help create the Lord of the Rings universe). Conan’s stories take place in the “Hyborian Age”, which was inspired by the Greek ‘Hyperboreans’. It’s clearly mentioned that Howard based Conan’s appearance on a proto-Celtic type with tanned skin, black hair and blue eyes. And yes, there are quite a few people in Europe with such features. To give you one out of countless examples: my German great-grandfather was tanned as hell with black hair and green eyes.
So while Conan’s world encompasses a huge variety of races and cultures (as did Tolkien’s LOTR universe), Conan himself and the northern part of “Hyboria” were definitely inspired by Europe.
Skin tone is not necessarily a determinant of race. Europe probably has the greatest variation in skin tone than anywhere else. We’re talking about a range from ghostly white to mediterranean bronze (and we have seen Arnold as both, if you’ve seen pics from his early days and then later into bodybuilding and films).
It seems that some people here want to play the politically correct distortion game. To say that Conan’s closest resemblance isn’t a European Caucasian person because he’s just a tanned fantasy character is garbage. It’s absolute hypocrisy. These same people would be upset if Blade or Spawn were not played by black actors. If you had a fantasy story with many elements taken from central African history/myth/anthropology – even though the characters weren’t exactly human – you would still want the main character played by the most accurate person. Arnold wasn’t the perfect role for Conan, but he was infinitely more accurate than this Hawaiian rastafarian metrosexual.
its just sad to see what they are doing to our larger than life heroes these days. Superheroes arent superheroes anymore. In like 90% of the movies that came out within the past decade geared towards superhuman capabilities, feats, people, etc are just… for lack of a better term “pussyfying” them. Probably the most recent, for any of you who follow Anime, the DBZ movie. I refused to see it and im a diehard fan. I believe it was one of the stepping stones to anime today. It was based on achieving pinnacle of power, and then surpassing even that. It was an amazing anime, especially as a kid. What was that translated into via a live action movie? Some 130lb Dingleberry in highschool…its like, come on. Ya…come on.

Well said, Squash. I have a significant percentage of a bookcase in my home dedicated to Conan material (including all of REH works) and I thought about putting together a post similar to yours but didn’t have the motivation.
There really is no sense making too much hay over the race issue, anyway. This guy just does not fit the bill physically.
Aside from all of that, my biggest letdown was when Peter Jackson was no longer being tapped as the director. He is one of the best directors in the business IMHO and he would have done Conan right.
Instead, we get the guy who did Pathfinder? I’m now hoping they pull the plug on the whole thing and keep the hope alive that Conan will one day receive the theatrical treatment he deserves.
The Cimmerians in the book are FICTIONAL. You can not do an anthropology lesson on FICTIONAL beings.
What race was the princess from Never Ending Story? I am just DYING to know just in case they ever remake it and have the audacity to allow someone else to fit the role.
That whole wall of text above is speculation based on the way names are used. “LOOSELY BASED”…
Some of you are truly cracking me up about this. While Arnold left a huge imprint on the brain about what Conan should look like, it is really not that big of a deal for me. Yes, Conan should have muscles, but based upon what I’m reading and such, to make an accurate depiction of Conan, you have to find someone with size AND agility. Arnold didn’t fit that description. Face it. Dude is as agile as a freakin tree. Sorry, but truth is truth.
Moving on to the race/color issue, if Conan is described as dark complected, then would it not be reasonable to find someone who fits that bill? Arnold sure as shit did not. Yet, he is hailed as the “standard”. There is a huge issue with Momoa being cast, however, I’ve heard several people say Dwayne “Rock” Johnson should have been cast. HELLO!!! He is black and Samoan!!! He is not white!! The hypocrisy that is running rampant in here is incredible. The only TRUE issue with casting Momoa as Conan is his size. If he can put on the right amount of size AND have the grace and agility of the Conan character of the books, then there is no issue. Besides…it’s a movie. Purely fictional. Get over it.

Boy if you say Arnold wasn’t agile you probably didn’t see one documentary on him (or you are one of those people who consider bodybuilders “to muscle bound”) - watch Pumping Iron an see Arnie takeing freaking ballett lessens and not even doing bad.
Or even better atemp once to do a bodybuilding routine and then come back and try to tell me you don’t need no coordinatin and agility for its.
WTF is wrong wth you guys, race that’s your issue? Size yeah maybe I understand but race is your big issue. After years of watching middle eastern & Asian characters be played by Europeans I could give a flying fuck the race of the actor as long as he could play the part.
Conan Is not a fucking guy your sister could bring home to mom. Matter of fact he was a fucking Freak that made crazy killers cross the road to avoid him.
So the presence of fear is not in this actor. Hell I would have taken the guy that played the juggernaut in xmen or Michael Clark Duncan from the green mile as long as the could act the part at least the Fuckers look like the could choke a horse if needed to.
Race? History lessons on Conan? Do you Really give that much of a fuck if the race fit what you think he was but he wouldn’t scare a fucking little girl on site? If it makes you feel better I hear Megan Fox will be Red Sonja and together they will have little Emo warrior babies.

Taking lessons doesn’t make someone agile overnight. And while I have limited knowledge on what goes into a bodybuilding routine, I seriously doubt it translates to an accurate depiction of a fictional freak of nature such as Conan. A few ballet lessons does not make an oak tree into a cat. And I am not one to judge bodybuilders. Are you seriously calling that into question on here? Seriously? But that is beside the point. While the two Conan movies were cult classics, they only touched on how awesome Conan was. They were ultimately flawed movies. Not that they were bad or anything. I enjoyed the hell out of them.
It don’t think it matters if someone is actually agile - you can make someone look agile with good cinematography. Looking powerful, on the other hand, is something you can’t fake. That’s where Jason Momoa will falter.
I don’t think skin colour matters too much - the advantage of Conan being a Cimmerian, and having been drawn from a wide range of cultures is that the casting director is open to interpret Conan’s skin colour quite widely.
What does matter is that he looks like he can manoeuvre a big-ass sword with poise and precision, and look comfortable performing feats of enormous strength. With this guy, I just don’t see it.

Beyonce is cute as a mother fucker and has the body to pull it off. But I can’t see her killing a fly. I think I would laugh if she frowned. Jessica has the body for it but Maybe.

Edit: This is the new Conan. Name is Jason Momoa
I know original will never be done justice in a reboot. It also seems to me that the way that main characters are portrayed physically nowadays is gone compared to the older, classic movies like in Arnolds’ time. The fellow commandos and the enemies were all huge.
To me it made the elements in the big screen more fictitious in some sense (not the mass of the actors), and the antics of the main characters more funny (Let off some steam Bennett!).

After much deliberation, and much laughter at the “…would laugh if she frowned.” portion, I have these thoughts about Beyonce:
a) she would need to obtain and keep the look of someone with that baseline killer instinct.
b) she would have to spend some quality time in the gym and other forms of training to harden that soft, yet ever-so-fine, body of hers.
As for Jessica, she would have to work on that killer instinct as well. She strikes me as someone who is purely a defensive fighter. Now a pretty good actress that has that look in their eyes is Charlize Theron. While she is beautiful, she can be cold-blooded. Especially after watching Monster. Yeah…she’d be a frontrunner.

You people don’t get it. Being able to scare a little girl is beneath Conan the Cimmerian.
Conan would scare the shit out of Arnold himself.
The Fantasy World of the Hyperborian Age, is a mythical, epoch in human history.
ALL races and cultures in Conans ‘world’ are extinct by the time Real World Anthropology beings, as REH knew it.
Thus I maintain, Conan can not be a white, black or anything else, hell he was exotic even to the Hyperborians, if you read the original shit. A throw-back, in a made up time, full of throw-backs.
I don’t really mind this Momoa dude, as long as he gets some more muscle, and blue contacts.
I’ll being watching this anyways, 'cause I am a Conan-Nerd. Obviously look at my posts.

I’m with you except for the blue contacts, I don’t want to be that close to CONAN’S FACE even on screen to tell if he even has eyes. I want that fucker to look and act like he would clear a bar full of demons with the only one left being the HULK since everyone needs a drinking buddy. then they would fight over the bar wench.
