Need More Navy SEALs

SEALs get the toughtest missions, so their training/screening shold be the toughest. A lot of guys watch movies and get all romantic about military life and special forces. All run-and-gun, cool uniforms, tough guy persona…then they get to bootcamp and mentally crack under the pressure or just puss out physically. Special Forces ain’t no joke. The guys who make it initial training were hand selected out of the regular forces. The guys who actually make it through are people who live and breathe combat. Think of the most dedicated weightlifter, multiply that by about 10 and that’s about the intensity these guys put into their craft. It’s not a “I think I’ll try out for the SEALS”. It’s a total dedication to succes, desire to be the best, and willingness to go to weird places, suffer physically and kill people. All without public accolades (most of their ops are covert).

I would like to thank all the pro military people who have posted in this thread. And to all of you guys who say “all” it takes is just toughness and doubt the SEALs, and other Special Forces, need to know what they do is nessary… And without it the world would be a very differnt place.

Here is my SEAL story:
I was training last week, and another guy comes in to the “gym” and starts to lift. Later on he asks me for a spot, and we get talking…Turns out this guy pulled his hamstring a few days prior, and was doing legs that day… I told him he might hurt himself “really fuckin bad” if he kept training. He just kept going, and finished his workout…Thats tough…

I am always amazed by the training they go through. The mental toughness that’s required is something that I can’t even comprehend.

If I was ever in the Armed Forced, I’d love to go through the SEAL training just as a test of myself…just to see if I could.

For the guys that do it, I have a ton of respect.

When you’re swimming 5 miles out to sea or in the jungle way behind enemy lines without support, just you and a couple of other SpecOps guys, nobody cares about a pulled hamstring, twisted ankle or any other miscelaneous boo-boo’s that would send most of us to the hospital. These guys are the military’s equivalent of All-Pro football players, elite powerlifters and Mr. O contenders. Top of their game. None better. Ever see the movie “Unbreakable” with Bruce Willis? There’s a little bit of that mixed in as well. Your 20-rep squats ain’t squat compared to a 20 mile forced march with a heavy pack in the swealtering desert or bug infested jungle.

When I was at Marine Officer Candidate School…in northern Virginia…in January…it got to the point where I didn’t care if they kicked me out. But I wasn’t going to quit. The mental stuff is the hardest. You can adapt to the physical training, the knowledge of “I don’t really have to do this” is the hardest obstical. The frozen rivers (and we swam through every one), running carrying telephone poles, beating each other to death with pugil sticks, getting screamed at for scratching your ass, standing for hours at the position of attention while snow accumulates on your head, always being wrong in whatever you do…you can get through that. But knowing that all you have to do is raise your hand and say “I quit” really messes with your brain. I’m glad I stuck it out. Only 6 years more years to retirement.

Only a guy who is an idiot, a dickhead, or both joins the armed forces these days.

There really is a reason they try to get boys before they turn 25, you know.

It isn’t because the body has somehow “gotten old” at 25… That isn’t the reason.

When I was 18, I’d have happily enlisted.

Now that I’m 32, I know you couldn’t get me to enlist.

I would only defend my country against an invading force.

After the invading force was repelled, I’d be done shooting.

“Pre-emptive strike” is the funniest fucking thing I’ve ever heard of…what a funny, Orwellian way to say “We’re going to start a war” and try to make it the other guy’s fault.

Only idiots and dickheads join the armed forces these days.

Mostly because our leadership is a bunch of idiots and dickheads themselves.

Wow. Sounds like you got a big veiny hard-on for all those tough boys.

Easy soldier. The policy is don’t ask don’t tell… but you’re kind of “outing” yourself.

A lot of the posts are very good and insightful. Hell, I learned of a new site from a soldier. Pretty cool.

For this guy “Ryu13”, just in case you came back to see if anyone noticed you… the point of bestowing hell on someone like that is to tempt them to quit. You want people to quit, because only those left around are going to have some kind of balls to drive on when shit really, really sucks. You are probably too young to know what kinds of situations would bring you to the red zone on your suck-o-meter.

I got myself all ready to go for SF selection. It’s kinda tough, but the whole getting 4 hours of sleep a week part kinda turned me off. It’s rough shit and I give a lot of respect to the dudes who endure that shit. It just has to be hell. They dig it though. They love the suck, and ask for more of it. You gotta be fucking stupid to want to fight a country with those crazy bastards being ready to come after your ass.

Those of you retards talking down on the people of the military: before you call any of us losers with no other way to go, poor, or any other crazy crap like that, just remember that WE are the ones sleeping in the rain, slaving in the sun, running around in the dark while you’re sleeping, and eating something barely in the realm of edible because WE are the ones with the balls and drive to go impose horrible violence on your behald and we do it against people who would have your entrails spread across your lawn. Always remember that if we hadn’t been there all of the past century you would be speaking German, or Japanese, Spanish right now instead of English. You might have ended up speaking Arabic if we didn’t go pound the shit out of a couple countries these past 5 years.

If you don’t like what I just posted, go to hell.[/quote]

Quit whining, you crybaby.

God, you are such a pawn.

And now you are whining about it.

I can almost see you with your little chin shaking and your little tears and the snot coming out of your nose…

“WE’RE THE ONES KEEPING YOU SAFE!” (sob sob) “WE’RE THE ONES IN THE COLD!” (sob, sniffle)

blah blah blah.

Quit whining. You made your bed. Now go make rich men richer, which is all you are doing.

Pawn.

These guys define tough. Here’s a good story I saw on the History channel about a Seal Medal of Honor Winner in Vietnam.

The Navy Seals get ambushed. One guy gets hit in the head and his platoon commander carries him out of the jungle. They are being chased. The Lt. doing the carrying gets hit in the torso by some schrapnel from a rocket. He is trained to retreat towards the water so he gets the guy into the ocean and begins swimming out to sea. The task force is about 6 miles out to sea. It’s night so he swims all night towing the wounded guy. Gets picked up by a destoyer that is doing picket duty.
Both survive.

I don’t know how you could train a man to do that.

Before I graduated from high school, a friend and I were already tested and accepted for the Armed Forces. Every male on our four block street served, with the exception of one who had TB. We knew that we were good enough to get training in our career fields, and beyond. I did three tours in Vietnam. My classmates and I got out with a GI bill promise of education and/or a mortgage, and a VA promise that if we ever needed mediacl help it would be there. We are capable of doing anything we set our minds to. We did not do it for the $72.00 a month, we joined because it was the right thing to do, defend the country, mother and apple pie.

There are people who served, and there are ‘others’. If you Google your city and ‘Armed Forced Recruiter’ you should get a telephone number and address. After signing up, completing basic & advanced, and a Tech school, you will have started to develope the physical & mental toughness to write meanignfully in one of these military critizing blogs.

OUTSTANDING! Well said. I could care less if someone joins the military or not, that’s a personal choice, But those pussies who say “I was going to join but…” then go on with some flaming liberal anti-military idiotic rampage about being a pawn, or cattle or some other nonsense…I’d like to have them alone in a room by themselves for about 5 minutes so I can “explain” to them how this nation obtained it’s liberty and how it has been able to maintain it for two and a half centuries.

I’m 32 and I’d probably join up right now if I didn’t have a wife, two kids, and one on the way.

I have a hard time looking at all the body bags coming back and knowing that I haven’t done anything to help that guy get home safe.

Fuck the policy that got us in this mess. But, we need to get our boys home victorious and safe.

I don’t post often but this topic hit a nerve. I was 6 yrs NAVY and had a lot of friends in Hawaii that were SEAL’s. I worked out with them and lifted and showed some of them how to lift so they could be stronger. They don’t do it for the money, but more for proving they can do it. They don’t quit because if during BUD’s someone would have quit, and then they allowed them to pass, would you trust that guy to save your life at all costs? Probably not, they quit once, might happen again when shit hits the fan. Now to the people who put down the military and people who join it. I’ve been a civilian for about 11 yrs now and I still can’t find friends as good as the ones in the military. Those were friends that I would have died ofr if necessary and they would have done the same. That’s why most military and ex-military get along so well. Been there, done that. If you haven’t, then you wouldn’t understand.

I got out of the military because of Clinton. He downsized it back in the mid-nineties and extended our forces out even longer from home because there were less men and women to project our military power and interests in the world. It was about economics, and his policy won. I also left because every now and then there were idiots who were higher ranking than me calling the shots, and because they were “lifers”, they were always protecting their own asses and careers and not doing the “right” thing which sometimes wasn’t politically correct or within the rules.

The military is an international fighting force reminding people of just what America is all about. It shouldn’t have it’s balls cut off by politicians making policy especially when some of them have never served. I’m glad there are warriors out there who are willing to take the battle to someone else’s country instead of waiting for it to hit our borders. The SEAL’s are tough and so are the other special warfare units, and recruiting for them should be held at a high standard of quality. I failed my entrance package to the SEAL’s when I was in, I wasn’t in good enough shape and later, after Clinton started to downsize, I got tired of the political bullshit so I opted out. I miss the military and all the good people that were in it, and every now and then, when i’m out on the town and see a military member or even a veteran, i’ll help them if they need it or buy them a drink or dinner. What have you done for them lately?

On a closing note, for anyone who still bitches and moans about this country and the military, go ahead, it’s your right to and we can’t say anything about it. But just remember, it was the military that fought for that right that you so justly cling to and if that doesn’t change a little of your thinking, save up some money and go abroad to some foreign country. Preferably somewhere that is 3rd world or has a crisis going on and spend some time there “hanging out”. If you’re a little daring, start up some trouble and see what happens. Hopefully you’ll be able to make it back to the good ole’ USA safe and intack, but with a better appreciation of what our military is trying to protect back home.
