NBC Olympics

So I was doing a bit of research last night trying to figure out how I could watch the Olympics online so that I could see it live.

I find out that in the US NBC has exclusive rights to not only the TV broadcasts, but also anything online. They will not be showing anything online that they plan on showing during primetime tv, and they will not be showing any track and field online at all. I also read on a couple of blogs that you must have Windows Vista to watch anything online, but I’m not sure if this is true.

This is ridiculous and poor business. Frankly, I’m not all that interested in seeing these events 12 hours after they happen, especially when I can just check espn for the results, and likely find some videos on youtube within a few hours of the events.

I understand that showing the events during primetime, long after they have been completed, is common practice when the Olympics occur on a different continent, but with today’s technology there is no reason why we can’t get a live feed full of commercials over the internet. I would probably even pay for it.

I think I will boycott NBC during the entire Olympics. Anybody with me?

Certainly there must be some sort of European server or even a Chinese one with English language in which it would be possible to watch the Olympics as they unfold? Or it doesn’t even have to be English language, as the sports are, indeed, universal (or, earthal, at least). I’m not personally aware of what they would be, but living in Japan for 6 years has taught me that there are other routes to acquire virtually anything you need. And with the internet being what it is in these times, you just have to have enough motivation and you will find exactly what it is you are looking for.

Fuck NBC. I think you should boycott them for the very reasons you state. Unless you can absolutely not find another way to watch the Olympics

Damn sponsors are quickly becoming the new governments.

NBC’s sports coverage has gone downhill ever since they stopped showing sunday football and basketball. They should follow ABC/ESPN’s example with how those networks show the X-Games. No overproduced feel-good video segments, and tons of action.

I am not really interested in the Olympics anymore.

This seems a lot like when CBS covers the NCAA tourney. They put everything on one channel with exclusive rights. In the first 2 or 3 rounds you’re lucky to catch half of your team’s game, unless you’re Duke, Kentucky, or UNC. I hate it when big networks buy rights to events they may or may not even show.

On the other hand, the only reason it ticks me off is that I really want to see the stuff. So, I’m sure I’ll watch most of it, but I’ll try not to enjoy it as much.

They will block any IP address that originates in North America. There are programs that can give you an anonymous IP through a server overseas, but it is too slow to watch video.

Maybe somebody that knows more about the subject than me can tell us how to get the BBC feed. Renton?

You can watch the whole NCAA tourney on cbs.sportsline.com. They have had that for a few years.

I’m thrilled to have to devote 7 hours of time to see 20 minutes of women’s beach volleyball.

They need to put women’s volleyball, track and field, and gymnastics on the same programming block already. I’m just there for the booty.

That sucks a greasy fart out of Roseanne Barr’s asshole, but like I said, there is always a way to get what you want when it involves the internet. I am sorry that I do not have the answer for you, but I have a VERY positive attitude when it comes to the internet as a source for whatever the hell it is you want. And I think you should, too. If you keep looking, it will come up in pretty short time, I’ll wager. And then you should tell everyone here so they can all collectively tell NBC to fuck the fuck off, too

I just saw the athlete’s profile of one of the most beautiful Japanese girls I have ever seen, and I was waiting very patiently for her sport. Finally I hear it: badminton.

Fuck it, I think. I guess I can watch a little bit of Olympic badminton

Back in '92 I think it was there was a payperview package with 3 channels of 24/7 (live during the right time of day) coverage. That was the last olympics before NBC locked up its longterm deal.

The combination of a changed political scene, years of NBC’s shit coverage, and interminable scandal has eroded the event’s relevance though I think.

The Triplecast was awesome. I think I stayed inside for the entire two weeks. My 13 year-old self couldn’t get enough of the women’s diving.

I know there is a norwegian stream online, but its ofcourse in norwegian. Since we have one my best guess is that the UK got one too.

Not when you’re on dial up. Those were sad, sad days…
