He’s a MUCH better ballhandler than both, has a much better off hand, and can do everything going either way, like pull-up off the bounce going both ways, turn and fade over either shoulder [which is insane, he’s the only guy in the league who can do it], go hard one way and cross back, etc… He’s got every offensive tool in the book, and does everything as well or better than both.
James’ game is incredibly predictable, and despite all the hype from this past season he’s still just decent in the post. If we’re taking ref bailouts out of the equation, play up on him, be really physical, force him into a contested jumper and watch him miss. I think if you started talking to him it’d get in his head and he’d start missing more and take himself out of the game.
Jordan would be tougher 'caused he’d IMMEDIATELY try and take the ball to the post. His strength and footwork would be tough, but if Bryant played up and didn’t bite on the fakes he’d be alright. Force him out, play up, make him go left and force him into a pull-up.*
Durant would be maybe the toughest 'cause of his size, handle and range. You’d have to get in his jersey and be really physical with him. If he puts the ball on the floor he wants to go right but can cross back over and he has a variety of shots from floaters, finger rolls, pull-ups, etc… The thing is, even when he goes left he usually brings it up with his right. If you play that and beat him up a bit I think he wears down.
On the flip side, there’s nothing Bryant can’t do offensively. Whatever you try and force him into he has a counter move, and he has a handful of counters based off the initial counter. The guy has made a career of not only scoring at a ridiculous rate, he’s done it on some of the toughest shots of all time, sometimes seemingly just 'cause the game’s too easy and he wants to make things tougher on himself.
And, I’ve personally talked with several NBA players and to a man they all say Bryant is hands down the hardest dude to guard in the game. I play with Luther Head [ex-Rocket] at least once a week and he says Bryant would murder all of 'em.
*There are reports of Chris Jackson [Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf] beating Jordan 3-0 in a game at a Nike camp in front of hundreds of campers before his sophomore year at LSU. Jordan was apparently not happy.
WF, this was a nice writeup.
I could mention that Bryant was getting ripped with disturbing frequency this past season (at least, it seems that way since it almost never happened before) but that’s all 5-on-5 and NOT relevant to 1-on-1 context anyway.
What’s funny is that I’ve had similar discussion going on with college buddies via email and then-Chris Jackson entered that one as well. Here’s what a friend (who’s hoop knowledge/ability I hold in high regard) had to say:

So you typed this and still don’t see the flaw? Lebron is bigger and stronger than Kobe, in One on One the big guy generally wins. Going with an oldschool you push me to the paint I push and foul you back, Lebron backs him down rather easily. Lebron’s biggest post problem in the NBA is his size automatically makes ref’s call charge. In one on one that doesn’t happen. He could easily brute force Kobe.
I’m cheering for Calderon. Spain is kicking ass thus far
Lebron getting called for a foul? you clearly dont watch the nba.

He won the finals and the conference finals with his post play. Kobe is also older and not nearly as strong as LBJ. LBJ would also suffocate Kobe with his D at this point in their respective careers. Prime Kobe vs. Prime LBJ would be an awesome matchup. LBJ is an awesome defender who absolutely never bites on pump fakes and still contests shots really well. Basically the game would come down to whether Kobe got hot.
Kobe doesn’t have the strength to defend LBJ in the post though.
Fair enough. If either of them went down by 2 they might actually start biting and stabbing the other… possibly the two biggest competitors in NBA history
Actually I think this matchup would be good for Kobe. Unless Durant got hot from deep and shot over Kobe, I think he’d lost. Durant has decent handle, especially for his height - but not good enough to dribble around Kobe without being stripped.
You can goad him into jumpshots, although if they don’t fall and he goes down 3 or 4 points he may try harder to get to the rack. I don’t see him having the strength to back down LBJ or the height to effectively score in the post vs. Durant though. He would have to hit a couple outside shots to keep them honest and set up the drive.
Yes, we should base our opinions off the talent evaluation of Luther Head. Lol. That was just a humblebrag!
-I think Prime Jordan vs. Prime Kobe would be fun to watch, with Jordan winning a close one. He is just a little bit stronger and I don’t see Kobe keeping him out of the post.
Prime Kobe vs. Prime LBJ is a coin toss. Kobe would have to poke the ball out before LBJ got into the post, or goad him into jumpers. If either of them gets on fire it’s over.
Prime Kobe vs. Durant - I give to Kobe unless Durant just shoots immediately upon receiving the ball and makes it every time. His combination of not being quite quick enough or having quite good enough handle to drive on Kobe would make it hard.
If there was a one on one tournament with every guy in NBA history at their prime, you know some non-legend like JR smith would win… some guy who wasn’t a hall of famer at 5-on-5 but has 1-on-1 on lockdown.

I’m on board with this logic, similar to those And1 tapes with dudes doing crazy ass shit, but their game just doesnt translate to 5-5 nba play.

James won the finals 'cause the league handed it to him. Let’s be real here. Bryant would destroy these dudes, and just in case you didn’t realize this, Luther Head has defended both of these dudes. SEVERAL TIMES. Shane Battier told me the exact same thing a couple of years ago. Your arguement about players being shitty gm’s has absolutely no bearing when evaluating players they’re plaing/have played against. You know numbers that relate to the game but don’t know much about the actual game.

They’re doing “crazy shit” 'cause there’s absolutely zero defense being played. Some of those dudes can play, but most are just trick artists with relatively little game.

You cant play defense on some of those moves. Good offense beats good defense everytime in basketball.

I really hope you’re joking. Those “moves” aren’t even legal as defined by the rules and are no more than parlor tricks.

Offense > Defense
Anyways, who wins in a fight; batman, spiderman, or superman?

I don’t know about Kobe destroying these guys. Winning a close one, yeah.
My Knicks friend said MJ could do a lot of things around the basket in comparison to Kobe cuz MJ had ridiculously large hands. And to him MJ was a palming MF’er. lol

Wrong question raj. Of course people are going to be paying attention to Lin. The better question is anyone going to give a fuck about the Knicks now that Lin is gone. Jeremy Lin was the only reason the Knicks were relevant last season, sans Lin and with Brooklyn in the spotlight they likely won’t be grabbing headlines anymore (maybe if J. Kidd turns up to a game tipsy or wasted).
LOL, Lin wasn’t event the best player on the Knicks. Or the 2nd best. Or the 3rd best.
He might surpass Chandler or Amare in the next couple years but lets be honest with ourselves about his accomplishments thus far.
I liked him and wish the Knicks would’ve signed him but saying no one is going to give a fuck about the Knicks because he’s gone is ridiculous. There were more Knicks fans than Nets fans in New Jersey before Linsanity. This is in a state with 8 million people alone where basketball is popular.
