NBA Playoff Thread

I agree with Escot. But when you think about it, the Spurs and Pistons were fresh new teams at one point in time when they started winning championships, and they had to knock out the old teams to do it.

It is essentially a cycle. Just like in any sport, a few teams dominate the league for a few years, then they start to decline, and new teams take over. I think it’s about that time for the cycle to start again.

I also agree with the predictability of the possible Spurs-Jazz matchup, probably Spurs in 5 games, and the Jazz win game 3 at home. Also, like you said, I’ll watch it regardless of who plays, because I LOVE the NBA, but the casual fan probably will not be attracted to it.

Hopefully Stoudemire and Diaw won’t get suspended. That would really hurt the series.

Breaking news: Stoudemire, Diaw suspended 1 game, Horry 2 games.

What a CROCK! Like the Spurs are really gonna miss “cheap shot Horry”. This series is fixed for the dirty Spurs. Now watch the Suns win despite everything… go Suns!
Please. If anything, they NBA wants teams like PHO and Dallas in the finals, because its simple: more offense brings more ratings. (Wasn’t the Detroit/SA series one the lowest rated ones in history?: that’s a question as I am not completely sure.)

Just out of curiosity, why was everyone pulling for GS? they could be the dumbest team in basketball: They jack up far too many 3’s, get frustrated when one defender has their way with them and end up throwing awful shots as a result of it. (Stephen Jackson, when Harping was having his way with him)

They barely run any offensive sets and take everything one on one. Though I must admit, they are tough defensively, but it just seems like there is no rhyme or reason to their offensive play. It seems like Utah is solid all around, besides their free throw shooting, and I believe they can give SA or PHO a run for their money.
I think you described why everyone likes GS, lol.

Me personally, I live near the bay area and I think thelast time GS made the playoffs I was 8… I would have been happy if the had gotten swept by Dallas.

Everyone loves an underdog

The NBA also wants superstars in the Finals as well. Like I had said before, the hardcore NBA fan will watch the NBA Finals regardless of who plays, but it’s the casual fan that the NBA is going after. If there are no superstars in the Finals, the casual fan probably won’t watch.

And yes, you are correct about the Pistons/Spurs 2005 Finals, it was one of the lowest rated NBA Finals in league history. But, no matter how boring the games seemed to be, there is NOTHING boring about winning championships.

Like KO said, everyone loves an underdog. It’s fun to watch GS play small ball. It’s fast paced and a lot of scoring going on.

Golden State made the playoffs on the last day of the regular season, and they beat the Clippers out for the final spot. Honestly, I think the Clippers maybe would have won 1 game, if not have gotten swept. The Clippers didn’t match up with Dallas the way GS did.

Since GS won game 1 in Dallas, I think it made it even more exciting to cheer for the Warriors, knowing they might have had a chance to win the series (which eventually they did).

They pulled the biggest upset in playoff history, and were very fun to watch. All of their games were exciting and dramatic… even the blowouts. Baron Davis showed how good he could be, Matt Barnes came out of nowhere to make a huge impact, and all of this was so unexpected. It’s exciting to see a team overcome the odds.

Another reason was their hustle (especially in round 1). They were obviously overmatched, but they flat out played harder than Dallas and wanted it more. Against Utah, I was hoping to see the same, but they just couldn’t get a damn rebound. Utah played very smart, but even at their best they are not nearly as fun to watch as Golden State at their best.

Based on the way they’ve handled this series so far, the NBA front office is a total joke. I love how that clown commish had time for all the media today, prob because he had to cancel his planned trip to PHO for tonight’s game.

Whatever though. PHO has closed ranks really well so far and I love how their crowd is booing the Spurs on EVERY single possession. Not even those crazy GS fans were doing that, lol.

Wednesday May 16 recap:

 1. Nets defeat 2) Cavs 83-72 - Jason Kidd had 20 points, 9 boards, and 6 dimes, and the Nets steal a win in Cleveland to make the series 3-2 Cavs heading back to Jersey. LeBron James had 20 and 9, and both teams combined for 19 points in the fourth quarter.

 2. Spurs defeat 2) Suns 88-85 - Tim Duncan had 21 and 12 and the Spurs use a big run at the end of the game to beat Phoenix and go up 3-2. Shawn Marion had 24 and 17 boards, and Steve Nash had 19 and 12 dimes, and had a chance at the end, but Nash couldn’t hit the three.

TMONEY1’S NEAT-O STUD OF THE NIGHT, SPONSORED BY T-Nation: Manu Ginobili. His 26 points and 10 rebounds, including two clutch free throws at the end of the game, closed the door on the Suns for game 5, and the Spurs have a chance to wrap up the series in game 6 back in San Antonio.

Thursday May 18 recap:

Woo Hoo! The Piston’s win eased the pain of the Red Wings loss to the Ducks.

HAHA yes they did. It’s a good time for sports fans in Detroit, both teams in their respective conference finals.

Laurie, are you from Detroit?

And let’s not forget the Tigers are off to a good start too! But we won’t even mention the Lions.

I’m from the Detroit area, but don’t live there now. Are you from that area too?

Damnit! We’re in for the dreaded Jazz-Spurs western conference finals. If you asked me before the playoffs started “what’s the one conference final matchup you would hate to see?” I would have said this one. I really don’t think Utah has a chance in the series. Get ready for predictable games. Okay, I’ll stop venting now.

Friday May 18 recap:

 1. Cavs defeat 6) Nets 88-72 - LeBron James had 23, 8, and 8, and the Cavs close the series out 4-2 and return to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 1992. Jason Kidd once again with a near triple double (19, 12, and 8), but the Nets shot terribly in the second half and couldn’t force game 7.

 2. Spurs defeat 2) Suns 114-106 - Manu Ginobili had 33 points and 11 boards off the bench, Tony Parker had 30, and the Spurs are in the Western Conference Finals after finishing off Phoenix 4-2. Amare Stoudemire had 38 points and 12 boards, and Steve Nash had 18 points and 14 dimes, but couldn’t come from behind in the fourth quarter to take it to game 7.

TMONEY1’S NEAT-O STUD OF THE NIGHT, SPONSORED BY T-Nation: Tim Duncan. His almost triple-double (24 points, 13 boards, 9 blocks(!)) propelled the Spurs into the conference finals and give them home court advantage.

TMONEY1’S HONORARY STUD OF THE NIGHT: Donyell Marshall. With a combined 10 points in games 1-5 in the series, Marsh broke out for 18 points (all 3’s) to help the Cavs play for a chance to play in the NBA Finals.

No I’m not, I’m originally from Oklahoma, grew up there, but moved to Illinois in January to work on my masters degree.

The reason I was asking is that I’ve heard it is a pretty rough city, is that true? There is a guy who plays for the Lions (Teddy Lehman), and I went to college with him at the University of Oklahoma.

His girlfriend was in town after his rookie year (2005). She is friends with one of my good friends, and she said the city was really rough and there were a lot of bad areas, so I was just curious.

It’s all good escot, vent all you want.

Yeah I think the Spurs will be too much for the Jazz, not only in playoff experience, but in individual matchups as well. Same with the Pistons over the Cavs, much more experience from Motown, and their team is just plain better than Cleveland.

LeBron better hope his supporting cast shows up this series, or the Cavs will probably be goin fishin pretty quick.

Welp, anyone else ready for the 2007-2008 season?

Whoops, I didn’t mean to diss the Lions. Hopefully they’ll have a better year this year.

Just like any large city, Detroit has some good areas, some not so good, and some real rough areas.

I actually grew up in a very small town over an hour northeast of Detroit, and only went to the city for sporting events, mostly Tiger baseball games.

My parents are huge sports fans so we always had a TV in the dining room so we’d never miss the Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings, or Lions game during dinner. Guess that’s why I’m such a sports fanatic now.

fast forward a week
pistons vs spurs

I’d really like to see an upset but I doubt it.

I gotcha. Thanks for clearing that up Laurie.
