I know someone posted about this album before, but I just have to reiterate how incredible this CD is.
Everytime I listen to it I can’t help but want to listen to again and again.

Ehh…I’m not too sure on this album. Everyone says “man, it’s one of his best ever” but it’s nowhere near the quality of Illmatic(obviously) or It Was Written. For that matter, it’s only better than Nastradamus and S.D IMO. Still better than some of the lyrical garbage released this year Doc’s Advocate

One argument I don’t understand…is expecting rap artists to never grow or change over their careers. I would expect that Nas isn’t in the same place in his life right now as his first album. The same goes for any artist out right now.
When Q-Tip released his solo album, he received a lot of flack because it didn’t sound like A Tribe Called Quest. He had Korn on one of his songs and his style was different than before.
A real artist that has a career that lasts over 10 years is going to have to change to some degree, either because of a change in their life style or in what influences them. That goes for LL Cool J and anyone else who isn’t a one hit wonder.
It’s like expecting Madonna to come out with “Like a Virgin” clones for 20 years.
I think one of the ONLY artists out who has been on the scene for decades and not changed much is Prince.
I personally like the new CD from Nas. I understand what he was getting at and I also don’t expect him to write the same raps as his first CD 12 years ago. He was literally a kid then. He’s a grown man now.

Ok, Prof, I completely understand what you are saying, and I would hope that most artists would grow and evolve. However, when some atrists grow and change, their music suffers and it isn’t as good as previous albums. I can’t comment on this album because I haven’t heard it yet.
That being said, how does it compare to Illmatic? Better, worse, or does it not compare because it is so different?

You’re right. Some artists just suck and you don’t find that out until their second album. I liked D’Angelo’s first album. You could put that on and listen to the whole thing non-stop. His second cd wasn’t anywhere near that level even though he’s a talented singer and song writer.
I like about 4 songs on Nas’ cd. To me that makes it “good”. “Great” is when you don’t ever feel like skipping a song. I wouldn’t compare this to his first cd 12 years ago. Someone who has that many records under their belt probably shouldn’t be judged only by their first cd. He’s been around too long for that.
