Music Of The Past

~Frank Zappa~ My first true love of music came when I went to see Frank Zappa. It was the most incredible musical experiece of my life. I’m still trying like hell to relive it.

I believe he was a true musical genius beyond his years and transcends time. He is a real thinking man’s (or in my case woman’s) guitarist and musician.

I’m in agreement with most of damnaftei’s words especially about King Crimson and ELP. Fripp is GOD on a guitar.

I also love, love, love Phish…Trey is also one of the best musicians I have heard in the last 20 years. I am hard pressed to find music of today that compares to these musicians of the past.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Most 20 somethings don’t even know these bands ever existed and it’s unfortunate for humanity and the progression of music in general.

I know I’m “youthfully challenged!”

One I forgot: The Guess Who

eagles (OVER RATED)
Kansas, Santana

who the… are the rest? They must be way old.

So you realize, so that there’s NO CONFUSION, 20 years ago (the 80s) was dominated by bands like Guns N Roses, Quiet Riot, Poison, Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister, Def Leppard, AC/DC, Sammy Hagar, the Scorpions, Whitesnake, Billy Idol, and Motley Crue.

Yes… 80’s ROCK it was before my time, AND it’s still freakin awesome!
80’s rock was during my 20’s, and for the most part it sucked. Freakin hair bands, men in tights do not make good music.

Al Green was absoultely the best at what he did!

Also, in that genre: The Spinners, Stylistics, Four tops.

The Soul music of the 70’s has never been equalled.

Those bands are great, kinda grew up with some of them. (I’m 29)

Lately I’ve had Paul & Oats & Stone Canyon Band in my head like M A D!

I wanna find out more about the band called “The James Band”. They’re from the 70’s. Anyone??

LMAO, yah! I totally screwed that one up! LOL. Hall & Oats, they were on the softer side, but were pretty damn good. And the James Gang I know nothing about, I do know of course of Joe Walsh. But that band in the 70’s, I know jack nothing!

And I can’t believe it! No one here has brought up “CHEAP TRICK”!!! THEY WERE MORE THAN A COVER BAND YOU KNOW! Those guys are way under rated!

And how about the Police, growing up in the 80’s they were BIG along with Duran Duran & The Cars.

And wasting all my time…time! Ahhh…those were the days!

Oh, and what about those Dead Milkmen?? LMAO, those songs still crack me up.

When I was a kid, The Grass Roots and Three Dog Night were my favorites. The “Classic Rock” stations don’t even have them on their (limited) rotation. Instead, I belive they’re played on the Oldies stations. WTF?

Instead the Classic Rock guys play the same 2 Kansas songs, the same 3 or 4 Eagles songs, the same 2 Cars songs, and only about 4 different Springsteen songs (plus only the crappy Manfred Mann version of Blinded by the Light).

It’s crap I tell ya!

Wow. Never heard Van referred to in that manner.

I’ve heard of Yngwie Fucking Malmsteen and Ice Mutherfuckin T (Bitch!), but not that.

 • SAGA
 • Styx
 • ELO
 • Tom Waits (mostly his 70s stuff)
 • Brian Wilson (with or without Beach Boys)

And … I admit it: Hot Chocolate (“No doubt about it” still gives me shivers…)

Great taste man.

All Along The Watchtower = greatest rock song in history.

Early twenties and loving all music … the theme song from my old gym was “Love Is A Battlefield” from Pat Benatar … they only had one tape, and that song was on there twice.

Too many great artists from the 80’s.

Few years back Iggy Pop played somewhere near me. He was 45 minutes too late, cursed the audience, kicked a hole in one of the speakers and dropped his pants, and I still think it was the greatest live concert ever.

The live version of The Passenger by Pop together with David Bowie gets my vote for no.2, hands down.

Barry Manilow is one of the greatest ballad writers and singers in the history of music!

Oh, it is definitely up there. Don’t know if I am remembering this correctly but Dylan said he could never perform that song again after hearing Jimi perform it.

Jethro Tull

You know what pisses me off? That people thing Jethro tull is a person, not a band.

Whose jethro tull?
Actually Jethro Tull is a person. Or was. He was a 16th century English agriculturalist who pioneered the use of the hoe, among other things. He is the man the band was named after.

That’s the only thing I can remember from Western Civ.

Jefferson airplane-white rabit is by far one of the best songs ever. If you don’t know it, you don’t know classic rock. The doors The End is also amazing.
Below is some of the other great classic rock songs.

Black Sabbath- Ironman
Jethro Tull-Aqualung
Hendrix- all along the watchtower (pretty much all hendrix)
All Zeplin songs
The animals-we gotta get out of this place

Hah, I’ve had someone actually ask me who is Led Zeppelin, and someone ask me who is Pink Floyd (like in Have a Cigar, “Oh and by the way, which one’s Pink?”).

If we’re talking about soul and R&B, let’s not forget the best offspring it’s ever created, funk, Bootsty Collins, Fred Wesley, the JB’s, Sly & the Family Stone, George Clinton, Parliament, Funkadelic, GOD BLESS THEM.

And yeah, Al Green is the shit. So is Dusty Springfield. I love that woman.

Only know a few three dog night songs, I don’t like Santana, Journey’s ok if I’m in the mood for it, Kansas I only know one song, Chicago’s all right, The Eagles are ok, I like Boston (well, their one good album), the Cars are pretty good, I like Billy Joel, I like some of Elton John, and I can’t stand Bruce Springsteen. Something about his crappy songs and his irritating manner.

As for others mentioned: Love Led Zep, Stones are good but way overrated, I love Skynyrd, Fleetwood Mac is great.

And finally, whoever mentioned the Sex Pistols, I hate you. I’m sorry, but I can not like anyone who likes this band. Their music sucked and they couldn’t play their instruments to save their goddamn lives. Everyone was just really titillated that they made fun of the queen, which apparently is the coolest fucking thing ever for British people. They are the definition of a band who was liked because they were “cool”, not because they possessed any musical talent whatsoever.

Yep. And the music industry has never recovered; unless the band looks right they get no media exposure and musicianship has gone out the window in a lot of cases.
