Music Of The Past

I’m curious of what guys in their 20’s think about the bands from 20 and 30 years ago.

Bands like, The Grass Roots, Three Dog Night, The Spinners, Santana, Journey, Styx, Kansas, Chicago, The Eagles, Boston, The Cars, Billy Joel, Elton John, Bruce Springstein and many others.

I’m not picking on the music of today. I understand that each generation has it’s own sound. But, probably because of my age, I just love listening to the many great groups from decades past. I try to match the music of today with those groups and artists and they always fall short.

I know, I know I’m old.

What’s your read on these groups from the past Mr. 20 something.

Be kind…but be honest.
Journey, Santana, Styx, Chicago, The Eagles, Billy Joel, and Bruce are all ppl I still listen to at the tender young age of 22. Mind you, I was brought up w/ music from the era you’re talking about courtest of my mom, so I am slightly biased.

I’m mid-twenties and know of all the bands you’ve posted.

Most of them haven’t aged well IMO. Grass Roots had two or three good songs in the 60s. Kansas? Overblown, dated and corny…and who the hell thought it was a good idea for a violinist to be playing in an arena rock band? Styx? Jesus Christ. I don’t think it gets much worse than Mr. Roboto or the rest of their wimpy hits. Boston? Catchy, but overproduced. The Cars debut is actually a great cd.

1977 was the greatest year in rock history and I love 80’s music – the Pogues, the Clash, Minor Threat, early Replacements, Bad Brains, and Black Flag. The popular bands of that era were pretty horrid, though.

Aerosmith

Although I listen to a lot of underground music,I still find time to put on a good classic rock band.
Blue oyster cult is my favorite…and pink floyd.

Hey ZEB! Leave those kids alone!

Good call. No wonder we get along.

No wonder me and Rainjack don’t agree on much.

Springsteen is one of my favorites, and I respect Bob Dylan as a poet, a writer, and a folk artist. Truly one of my favorites, and a heavy influence on me.

With the exception of some metal and modern day prog rock, i only really listen to 60s, 70s, 80s prog rock.

bands such as yes, wishbone ash, genesis, pink floyd, deep purple, rush et al make up the majority of my music collection

Bands like, The Grass Roots,
never heard of them.
Three Dog Night,
suck.
The Spinners
Awesome.

guitar wankers seem to worship this guy. I personally find his music rather boring…

You’re kidding right? I’m surprised you didn’t ask about Steve Perry’s solo albums…

domo arigato Mr. Roboto… if you have a sense of irony, I guess… maybe you should have name checked Thomas Dolby as well… blah.

can you say midwestern shit rock?

look ma I have no testicles!!

old white guys seem to dig them.

homeboy had the craziest whitey-fro this side of Oscar Gamble. However, his cool hairdo couldn’t make up for the fact that this was a guitar-wanker band par excellence.

The lead singer looks like the cross of a deformed muppet and Lurch - but hey he bagged a top-shelf supermodel - which goes to show with enough scratch even the ugliest SOB can bag a goddess. Oh yeah, they are were a shittier less original version of the Talking Heads who totally sold out.

stupid northeastern sorority girls and soccer moms seem to like him. Personally I have come to hate “Piano Man” with a passion. It was one of those songs like Van Morrisson’s “Brown Eyed Girl” that was just overplayed.

his 70’s early 80’s stuff was good until he became a maudlin old queen.

overrated. That’s a NY/NJ thing I will never quite understand.

You’re not old - your taste in music never seemed to venture away from the garbage they play on commercial radio.

David Bowie’s shit from the 70’s alone pretty much wipes the floor with anything put out by any of those guys you mentioned.

The Sex Pistols’ first album was pretty much 35 minutes of fury - and it still holds up today.

The Kinks? Velvet Underground? The Early Lou Reed solo records? Early Elvis Costello? The first Clash records?

I’m surprised you didn’t mention Zepellin or Floyd - that still kicks ass.

To the guy who mentioned T-Rex - fuck yeah - they rock.

Oh yeah, the Kinks fucking rule!

Sensational Alex Harvey Band-Deep Purple-Who(Live @ Leeds)- Kinks - Mountain - Alice Cooper - Blue Oyster Cult - Early Hendrix(Incl.Band of Gypsies) - 10 Years After - Ian Hunter/Mott - Thin Lizzy - Zep (I to III) - Bowie/Ziggy - Scorpions - Uriah Heep - Yardbirds - ZZ Top(Hendrix’s favorite boogie band)- Eric Burdon & the Animals - Cream - Grand Funk(#1 & Live Album) - Black Sabbath (#1) - J.Geils Band - Humble Pie(I don’t need no Doctor!) - James Gang(Joe Walsh) - Foghat - KISS - Cheap Trick - UFO (M.Schenker) - Robin Trower - Johnny Winter - Queen#1- The Sweet -[Obviously, you did not drink enough alcohol and smoke enough of those green cigarettes back in the 60’s/70’s, Bro’!/;0]

Zeb, I dig all those bands, any and all classic rock.

Allman Bros., Zeppelin, AC/DC…how could I not have listed them?

Good additions!

It’s great to hear someone your age saying that “they don’t make bands like that anymore.”

I walk around thinking that but again I’m afraid it’s an age thing…apparently not huh?

I try never to argue with great boxing legends. I don’t even argue with those who use names of great boxing legends. But…The Grass Roots had no hits until the early 70’s.

“I try never to argue with great boxing legends. I don’t even argue with those who use names of great boxing legends. But…The Grass Roots had no hits until the early 70’s.”

The two Grass Roots hits that I liked were from the 60’s. “Let’s Live for Today” (1967) and “Midnight Confessions” (1968).

I don’t even know any of their other songs, but they were active (and popular) in the 1960’s and pretty much gone by 1970 or 1971.

I’m 21, and I grew up with that music because of my parents. Theres not too many days I go without hearing LedZep, Doors, Stones, Seager, Springsteen, Who, Eagles,Clapton, Cream, Boston…

I could keep going naming bands, but I see myself listen to all of them in 20yrs alongside the ‘current’ bands i listen to.
playmaker08 wrote:
im 19 and just started getting into some older music. I think my two favorite bands as of now is Motley Crue and Van Halen, with the 80’s Metallica in a close 3rd.
For some reason, this post made me feel a very old 36. Bands that I grew up listening to being called older music.

i think we might need to take in to consideration that each era produces really great music.

A lot of the bands listed, past and present are good in their own right.

Unfortunately we live in a culture dominated by commercial crap that doesn’t dare risk playing anything a little left field, so cetain bands from the 60’s and 70’s just out-shine anything you’ll hear on certain radio stations.
At the moment if you look, you’ll find a lot of great bands and yes you can say they are ripping off so and so, but go back they were ripping people off in the past as well. the Stones for eg ripped off heaps of people.

Oh God, there’s two of us. Although I cringed when I listed to some of my old Procul Harum;-)

All of those guys are gay.

You insult the Boss again, and I might have to make a special trip to Austrailia to show you what Jersey’s about

Zeb, I dig all those bands, any and all classic rock.

Although, one excellent rock band you may have never heard of is Buckcherry. They are straight up rock and roll, and are always a step away from being completely famous.
Agreed, buckcherry is very underrated

I agree with Zep, hendrix, stones, allman bros, and most of the other stuff listed. But you guys are missin out on so much good stuff. Mamas and papas, jefferson airplane, joplin, buffalo springfield, dusty springfield, byrds, CREDENCE, doobie bros, (sorry about this but what about fleetwood mac), geroge thorogood, harry chapin, manfred mann, ram jam, Neil Young??? Some even older stuff: al green, four tops, temptations, supremes, bobby darin, marvin gaye, johny cash…and don’t forget…DANZIG!!!(kidding)
swivel wrote:

i also like bob Seger for which i take alot of shit but fuck y’all: I LIKE BOB SEGER.
70’s or 80’s Seger? His old stuff is the definition of working class rock, he was the Boss way before Springsteen.
His was my first concert, way back in 1977.

If you like the album “Goodbye yellow brick road”, check out " Madman across the water".

Gotta agree about T-Rex, although they really only had one great album.

Zeb, the bands you mentioned all had their moments, but this is definitely the softer side of classic rock.
