MP3 Players While Shopping?

I’m not proud to admit this, but I used to be a common, low-life criminal. Mostly shoplifting, but I wasn’t above a little mugging now and then. My modus operandi was to walk behind someone and drop a box of wine glasses. If they took no notice, I moved in for their valuables. Let that be a lesson to you Emily Q.

To summarize:

Headphones in a safe place = good.

Headphones in a place where they could lead you to miss the sound of a box of wine glasses shattering behind you = bad.

I sensed that about you, sen say. Something in the way you post…if I’m wearing earbuds when I see your icon, I usually pull them out. An instinct…

Irish, I meant that I have enough to worry about safety-wise. Ask any reasonably intelligent female over the age of sixteen what she does to minimize her risks and she’ll bore you to death with the list. We are ALWAYS aware that we’re potential targets.

What infuriates me is the implication that stupidity is behind any decision to accept some small risk. Why is it admirable when men do martial arts, with its high risk of injury? Why is football considered a reasonable pursuit? Why not reserve your derision for the people getting wasted and wandering the city? They (you) are accepting far more risk.

Stupid asses wear that shit all the time.

You are setting yourself up to be either robbed or hit by a car. Nothing is so easy as taking something from a person who is absolutely completely unaware of what’s going on around them. You may as well wear the hood up on your sweatshirts all the time too, just to make sure you can’t see anything either.

The fact that a woman would do this also bamboozles me.
I always pull the hood up on my sweatshirt right before I rob the stupid ass wearing the iPod.

That’s it.

At random times I’m going to have my buds in, but leave the music off. One of these days, those of you who keep sneaking up directly behind me (so as not to be glimpsed peripherally) are going to pick the wrong time to do it. When you do, I’m going to use the earbud cord to garrote your ass. I may further decide to mug or rape you, depending on my mood.

Because I’ve had it with all of you.

I just looked up garrote in the dictionary.

I don’t think the tensile strength of the earplug cords could handle the job.

Walk around a college campus and you will see this. It’s kind of bizarre.
It is the same way at my college and other ones I have been to. Even in class a lot of people wear them, which I cannot even begin to understand.

Garrote their neck instead.

Also, not to beat a dead horse…but sometimes I’d have 2 or 3 accomplices and we would each drop a box of wine glasses behind our mark JUST to make sure everything was a go…now that I think about it…we probably spent more in boxes of wine glasses than we ever earned mugging the earplugged masses.

I prefer piano wire. Good, strong piano wire.

Isn’t there wire inside my earbud cords? Won’t that be stong enough?

sen say, you’re coming THIS close. I’m planning to garrote your ass AND your neck. Then, if I still feel tense, I’m going to garrote your arm, to boot.

Haha. That actually made me laugh out loud.

I use my ipod mostly in the car, jacked into the stereo, naturally. I live a mile from work, the bank, the post office, the grocery store, and my 2 favorite movie theaters, so I walk a lot. Sometimes the same old scenery gets boring. I don’t turn it up so loud that I can’t hear traffic and I have zero chance of getting mugged.

If I did get mugged, I am sure that the mugger would respect my taste in music. Unlike this case:

There is a distinction to be made between a Mugger / Rapist and a pickpocket.

I cant see how the former would be hindered by anyone wearing any type of distracting agent… They arent trying to accomplish their mission covertly. The mugger will come up in front of you / behind you, pull a gun or a knife on you (you WILL be aware of their presence at this point) and tell you to give them whatever it is you have that they want (Granted the iPod may act as an extra insentive… a visible item of monetary value to take)

A pickpocket however I assume will look for marks that are being distracted… At parades, conventions, shopping, and thus MP3 player could possibly be a hinderance.

Sen Say - Which of the two above did you do? Would you just go up and demand the mark give you whatever they had on them, or did you attempt to take their stuff without getting caught? If its the first one, how did making sure they were distracted help?

It’s thin copper wire, you can tear it with your hands pretty easily.

I used to wear my earphones around everywhere I go but now, I completely changed. listening to music while doing anything ruins my concentration so I’ve learned to put down the music.

But to answer ur question, you should come down to a southern cali mall. Its ridiculous. Every teenage girl has their shitty ipod earphones on and ‘pretending’ to text some guy or girl just to look cute. Its horrible

Oh. Wow. That would be awkward, wouldn’t it? Like swatting at a bee and missing. Then it’s all pissed off and still totally alive.

Maybe it’ll be too awkward for him to hang around, so instead of mugging you or whatever he’ll just be like, “Look, maybe we can do this some other time but I just remembered I have to … floss”. Then he can go collect more boxes of wine for his next attempt.

I have one other appendage you haven’t mentioned…though I’d prefer like a silk or possibly velvet garrote…

Lonnie…I count 3 (not 2) options from your post…1) Mugger 2) Rapist and 3) Pickpocket. I’m not sure if you’re lumping muggers and rapists together, but, believe me, not all muggers are rapists and not all rapists are muggers…in fact I knew quite a few from the local Thieve’s Guild and these guys would NOT be happy with you indiscriminately lumping them together…which…I’ll assume was a mere oversight on your part.

Anyway…before I reply directly to your question, I’d like some assurance from you that you are not up to any of the following:

 1. Undercover FBI/CIA looking to capture the Wine Box Bandit (there…it’s out…I AM he).

 2. Trying to find out specifics in order to perpetrate similar crimes against your fellow man/woman.

 3. An old mark looking to track me down and extract revenge.

So…I’m not sure exactly how you can assure me of this…but, I’ll leave that up to you.

Sincerely,
Sen Say

Yeah, it is pretty pathetic. Ipods + those little dingleberry hand-held computer thingies = antisocial behavior.
