Moving To California

I’m just curious. Why Cali? What is it that makes you want to move to Cali? Are there any specific items or reasons? Or does it just sound like a cool place to live?

Cool thread.

Bluepfaltz: I feel you buddy. I’m an aspiring screenwriter, and I know one day soon I’ll have to make that move cross-country to pursue my dream. I think about Cali every day.

But for now, I live in NYC, work in Jersey and am buying a condo in Jersey City next month.

I’m doing the best I can here, and when it comes time to move, I’ll do the best I can there.

Just be smart about your move. I made a big move to follow a dream before and made a TON of mistakes

You know what? PM me and we’ll chat

(I just started training in MMA btw.)

Im wondering if Cali is as much a police state as Jersey is. I got arrested a whole slew of times here in Jersey, mostly for stupid shit, like driving a 67’ Ford Mustang into a neighbors pool. But aside from that, the cops in Jersey are not very leanient at all. I blame NY for that, but in any case, Jersey isnt as liberal as it seems.

With the election, we saw that Cali voted prominently Democratic, so i would guess that crime isnt so bad and the people are fairly liberal, with the exception of LA, of course.

Aside from the politics, would it be fair to say that a 20 year old, single, Black-Belt T-man would have a good time around the south to mid Cali area? [/quote]

Actually many counties in Cali are conservative. I live in Orange county and it is 90% red. Most of your liberals live in the coastal communities.

Since you’re single you don’t want to live in most parts of Orange County with the exception of Laguna Beach and Newport Beach. Most of Orange County people are married. BTW, Orange county is smack dab between LA county and San Diego county. It takes about 2.5 hours to drive from LA county to San Diego. So I am about an hour away from each. You do need a good paying job to live in most coastal communities in California. San Diego may be your best bet for lower cost of living but still near the coast. In LA, Redondo Beach and Santa Monica are great places to live for singles.

I did what you’re thinking about doing 10 years ago. At 24 yrs of age, I decided I didn’t want to go through another winter in New England so I moved here and will never live anywhere else. I love it here.

I wish I could have some pratical legit reason, but I’m just in love with the californian culture. Some of my wardrobe consists of Hollister clothing, Tool & A Perfect Circle being my favorite bands, and I love surfing, which incidentaly, south Jersey shore isnt too popular for.

I guess I do think it’s a cool place to live, but what I think and what it really is could be very different, so Ill visit first.

In addition, I feel the Northeast is too complex. There are too many rules and stupid laws up here, its just plain crazy. To think, as populated as it is up here there are (or were) commercials inviting tourists from all over the country to visit Jersey for vacation… Yea, just think… they’re people in Hawaii watching this going “What are we thinking bieng here? we should go spend vacation in Jersey.” Not to mention the crazy weather we get. Im tired of 4 season weather, i just want an oven climate year round. Cuts my wardrobe nearly in half. I would be able to drive a nice fast car at half my insurance rate that I have now practically, and not have to buy snow tires. Colorado is near for skiing, Northern Cali is close as it has all the outdoors have to offer. Me? I have Harriman state park…

Its only that I believe (keyword) Cali is suited to what I love best. Warm weather, beaches, Gyms galore, MMA dojos and countless hot women. Despite the expensiveness, Im going to college to get a degree so I can have a good job. Any market for Astronautical Engineers?

Randman- I identify 100% with what you wrote about the winter! This past winter went on FOREVER, we had freezing days in April and even May was chilly. For the first time in my life, I got fed up with it. 4 seasons are nice, but 5 months of cold weather plus another 6 weeks or so of chilly weather, like this past year, is almost unbearable. I spent 2-3 months looking at FLA real estate websites every day, seriously thinking about what I could afford down there.
I also spent time looking at Cali RE as well.

Anyway, the funny thing is this winter started late, we’ve only had 3 inches of snow so far, and Thur and Fri its supposed to go to 50!

F’n global warming, let’s hope we take care of it soon…

BluePfaltz, if you are concerned with bullshit laws, then Cali isn’t the place for you. It is very beautiful, despite being expensive. I live in Encinitas, which is a pretty wealthy place, and I can’t afford it anymore. Most of the people that I work with have two jobs just to pay the bills. That being said, when I can afford it, I will move back, as it is undoubtedly the closest place to a “home” that I have ever had.

California in a nut shell:

[UFKCING NUTZ]

I’ve lived in the Bay Area and currently live in the central valley.

Here’s what sucks:
cost of living
politics
taxes
fake titties
service
hippies
finding a restroom
traffic
los angeles
pollution
raiders
lakers

Here’s what rules:
chargers
kings
girls
beaches
bitches
mountains
women
fake titties
san diego
hot chicks
SF bay area

All I ever needed to know I learned from Bastard F*ck Guy,
BFG

Actually, the cost of living is higher in San Diego (housing prices among the highest in the state, gas prices the highest in the contiguous 48 states) than anywhere else in SoCal. And salaries are lower. Great place to live if you have the $$$$.

I’ve lived in Nor Cal and So Cal – might as well be two different states.

Anyhow, San Diego is great – Orange County can be too, but generally I think it’s more expensive and status-conscious than San Diego (though the girls are kickin’). Actually, the people I know who grew up in Orange County always thought it was better than San Diego, and vice versa – me, I prefer San Diego.

As for Cost of Living, check this site out:

http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/costofliving/costofliving.html

It says San Diego is less expensive than San Francisco, but I don’t know if that takes suburbs into account.

Here’s another site too – it lets you specify “rent” vs. “own” on real property, and it has more cities:

Anyway, it’s expensive in California if you want to live close to the major cities, on the coast. But I love San Diego – I’m going to move back eventually.

Thank you for those links, they really proved useful.

No matter which way I look at it, Id better have money to move out there with.

Thanks for all your help

If you want to train outside in Southern California, go to Muscle Beach in Venice. For $5 a session, you can train at the outdoor gym (if you like rustly plates and equipment). During the summer, the city holds powerlifting meets and bodybuilding shows there. FYI, it was 82 degrees Christmas Day.

I just moved to the East Bay (Berkeley). Does anyone know of any good gyms in the area with reputable strength coaches. Has anyone ever worked out at the UC Berkeley gym? I might give it a shot if it gets good reviews.

i am making the new rule that if a thread is more than a year old, then you must let it rest and start a new one

that gym used to suck because it was too crowded … plenty of weights and shit … but all kinds of crowded with all kinds of frat curlers

here is what to do … go there … get in friendly with the staff … all of them … then tell them you want to go train in the small gym upstairs for the athletes … it’s always empty, they have a platform and bumpers and everything a meathead could want … power racks, plenty of dumbbells, pullup stations, cables, and a swiss dude with balls

if, when you get there, you find a gorgeous chilean girl with the most amazing legs you have ever seen in your life, find out if her name is paulina, and then PM me

(of course, this was all 10 years ago, but that facility was new and probably hasn’t changed much)

Dan

if you are moving to cali. south is the way to go. i live in san diego. it’s the shit down here. it’s pretty crowded, but worth it. sooo many women, beaches, every gym you could imagine. the only other beach are i would shoose is santa barbara. mile for mile i have seen more hot ass chick there than anywhere. it’s pretty costly, and kinda secluded. if you like quite, go santa barbara. if you like busy go to s.d.

I love San Diego, I would stick it right in San Diego’s butt. If I wasn’t on probation I would so get a 2B with you BP.
