Movies You Might Enjoy

I was going to list just one movie a week but this thread kinda took a life of its own. Others made some really interesting suggestions so props for that.

As for me, my recommendations for this weekend are Headhunters, The Man from Nowhere, The Fabulous Baker Boys, The Last of the Mohicans. I already gave ratings and brief descriptions on these earlier.

Everyone have a great weekend!

The poster for Headhunters. I’ve seen different posters used elsewhere. A smart thriller. See my first post for description.

I thought this was pretty good. About a Danish insurgency against Nazi occupation. Beware, there will be reading involved. Its on Amazon Prime if anyone wants to check it out.

You beat me to the punch, sir! This was going to be in my next week’s list.

Definitely give this one 4.25 minotaurs.

Also, this movie Hunger. Its pretty intense at times. About the 1980s imprisonment of IRA members by the British. It doesn’t really focus hugely on the politics of it all. Its got the guy who played younger magneto. Also on Amazon. I believe you’ll find this may get at least 4 minotaurs.

some of the sweetest fight scenes you’ve ever seen in a movie!

Koreans know good cinema

When you’re wounded an’ left on Afghanistan’s plains
An’ the women come out to cut up your remains
Jus’ roll to your rifle an’ blow out your brains
An’ go to your Gawd like a soldier.

“The Beast” or “The Beast of War” is about a Russian tank that gets lost during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. I had never heard of it and picked it up in the $5 bin at Wal-Mart. didn’t do for shit in the box office but everyone that I’ve shown it to has thought it was great.

I couldn’t find this anywhere. I’ll keep an eye out for it. Thanks!

They sure do. I’ve seen several good films from South Korea now.

Thanks very much for pointing this out. After seeing your post, I went to YouTube and watched a few clips. Looks really promising.

There is a HD version on YouTube but no English subtitles. The asshat who posted it makes you go to ANOTHER site to download the version with subtitles but there is NO WAY in HELL I was going to do that. Don’t need any malware.

I’ll keep an eye out for this one definitely. Thanks!

A couple of times I meant to watch this but just couldn’t get worked up to it. It is on my list, though. That actor is Michael Fassbender. He’s been in some good stuff including Band of Brothers and Prometheus. See my future post on Centurion.

Centurion, a 2010 movie from England.

The film centers around the Roman invasion of Scotland. There, the Romans face guerilla attacks from the Picts. The film received some criticism for portraying the natives as ruthless savages. They were just trying to protect their land from the foreign invasion, after all. So the viewer will have to suspend disbelief in that regard.

Beautiful scenery and cinematography, excellent battle scenes, damn fine acting. Also has Olga Kurylenko (she played the Bond girl in Quantum of Solace) looking bad ass and beautiful.

This movie really didn’t get the love at the box office or from the critics. Does it have flaws? Yes. But is it still a damn good time at the movies? I think so and that’s why I’m recommending this for any fan of the sword and sandals genre.

I have pictish ancestry! Those asshole romans conquered the whole world except the tiny bit of Scotland I’m from!

Come up to the highlands guys, we’ll set about ye!

Awesome! Yeah, even though that flick portrays the Picts as the bad guys, they were just defending their way of life. That’s one of the flaws with this flick. Nothing groundbreaking in this movie but I enjoyed it!

And you can tell Picts are not to be fucked with. I’m guessing you’ll like some of the fight scenes then.

Mitchnasty mentioned this movie on 6-27 and since it was on my list, I’ll give a more detailed write up.

Flame and Citron, 2008 release from Denmark. English subtitles.

Based on actual events, the film chronicles two resistance fighters during WWII Denmark. Their mission is to kill various Nazi sympathizers within the Danish population. Inevitably, the missions become more complex and dangerous.

American viewers will recognize the actor portraying Citron. He played the villain in Casino Royal and currently plays Dr Lecter on the tv show Hanibal.

There is so much duplicity amongst the characters in Flame and Citron that you’ll get caught up in the paranoia and self-doubt the protagonists suffer. This is a much more cerebral film than Centurion (see 6-30 post). Both are worth watching IMO, so it really depends on the type of movie you’re in the mood for.

DO NOT READ REVIEWS OUT THERE AS MANY OF THEM CONTAIN SPOILERS!!! Just give it about 15 minutes and if it ain’t your cup of tea, move on or save for later.

This past weekend, Le Tour de France, the world’s most famous bicycle race, began.

Most people on this site couldn’t care less about watching skeletal men in spandex riding bikes that cost more than some cars. But it did remind me of a movie I highly recommend.

Breaking Away is a 1979 American film about four childhood friends, recently graduated from high school, who are at a crossroads in their lives. They grew up and reside in an Indiana college town, where the snobby university students refer to them and others like them as cutters, a derogatory term referencing the nearby limestone quarries and blue collar background. The most poignant theme, IMO, is less about class struggle and more about the importance of knowing when to give up one dream so you can liberate yourself to pursue another.

And like all great sports movies, you don’t have to be a fan of the sport itself to enjoy it.

People I’ve met who’ve been around in the late 70’s and early 80’s often remember this movie because it deservedly received both box-office and critical success upon initial release. Not all great movies are so lucky.

Highly recommended as a date movie. Unlike other articles and reviews out there, I don’t want to give away any more of the story line because I think that ruins the discovery process.

Where up north are you from?

one of my favorites but definitely not for everyone. don’t watch if you like the song “Singing in the Rain!”

A very polarizing movie, in my estimation. And you’re right - any Gene Kelly fans may want to steer clear on this one! Can definitely ruin any nostalgia over that song and dance number.

From a technical point, I found it superb. Overall, I’m in agreement with Roger Ebert in that it left me cold. It also left me hollow, if that makes any sense.
