Nothing to do outside the loop, all the action is inside. Bellaire has a huge Asian population so if you like good Vietnamese/Chinese food check that place out. If your into Aryan looking girls, the nightlife of Washington Avenue is pretty cool. Lots of Ed Hardy/Affliction douchebags though. Main Street is lined with bars and lots of clubs,go there if you want to go bar hopping. Lot of hot black girls with their tiny dresses and high heels walking the streets too. Westimer is filled with Strip Clubs and (Again) bars. Montrose is cool from time to time if your into the art scene, coffee shop, and…uh…gay culture?
Hold on a sec there, lets link both sources. Here is the breakdown from the American Community Survey that you quoted. Chicago does not have even close to double the population and the population split isn’t much different. Houston has a higher percentage of Hispanics which are in the white category and Chicago has a higher percentage of black people. What Houston doesn’t have is ethnically demarcated neighborhoods other than the standard ones due to income levels. This is more a function of history and when/how the cities were initially populated. If what you define as diversity is little Italy/Greece/Romania/Russia/etc. then Houston will fall short but if you define it as a diverse population than Houston has plenty.
Total population 2,725,206
White 1,086,524 39.9%
Black or African American 944,152 34.6%
Asian 134,736 4.9%
Some other race 506,100 18.6
Total population 2,024,379
White 1,089,116 53.8%
Black or African American 487,666 24.1%
Asian 108,015 5.3%
Some other race 307,535 15.2%
No arguments here. Races in Houston are not confined to specific neighborhoods mainly in part by our zoning laws.(Pretty cool to have a bar, strip club, laundromat,And supermarket all on the same block) Yeah,we have alot of Vietnamese/Chinese living in Alief and Bellaire and The Ward area have alot of Blacks but this is only in few cases whereas mostly people here live according to their income level. As for myself,I live in a working class/blue collar neighborhood (for now) where me and a couple of other Asians and Whites are scattered among the mostly Hispanic neighbors.
Thanks for the info. I’m fucking sick of Jersey.
One thing to consider, not all white people are the same. There were towns in Texas (some are still this way) with very strong European roots - as in locals speak German, Swedish, Czech. Plus, Southerns actually have quite a bit of regional differences. So Georgian, is different from, Louisiana, different from Tennessee, different from West Texan, etc. You will get more of a mix of locals than in the midwest.
Anyway, there is a regional that Texas is treated as its own region in many of the college Geography textbooks. The cities are going to reflect this cultural diversity.
I’ve lived in Houston for about 6 years. I want very badly to leave, but can’t find good paying jobs anywhere else. Houston sucks. It’s completely flat and ugly as fuck. The weather is horrible and the entire city was built on a swamp. It smells like ass 9 months out of the year. It rains a lot. The rain doesn’t really bother me, but the inability of the people in this city to drive in the rain without destroying everything in their path pisses me off.
The people are alright. Most are disgusting lard asses, and there is a huge problem here with illegals. Something on the order of a half million in the Houston area. That means lots of deaths from drunk drivers on the weekends. Plenty of highly unsafe areas of town too. There’s quite a few shootings on the weekends that rarely make the news. Lots of beautiful women from whatever ethnicity you could possibly want to meet. I met an Estonian girl last weekend. There’s assloads of nightlife. I try to check out a new place every weekend, and in the time I’ve been here I haven’t been able to check out all the places I want to go.
If you’re in to strip clubs, they no longer exist in Houston proper. They’ve all become bikini bars my mandate of the City Council of Houston.
Summary, ugly and smelly. Shitty weather.
Well since your from Chicago, things are different. I have a cousin from H-town who hates it but loves Chicago, but not to bring it in but he is biased liberal nut job and from what he tells me that has a lot to do with it. Texas is completely different from Chicago but you can still party hang out and bang chicks in H-town.
Aside from political differences, people are nicer, though the heat may kill you. No state tax at all. Houston is a great city, in my opinion it has a great night life. Im from Dallas but been to houston many of times.
What my cousin said was that Chicago was more artsy and more historical thingys to do, thats how he described to me.
Also plenty of Hunting to do along with fishing in the Gulf. But there is an oil smell along with the name of skeetville for the mosquites that harrass you nonstop.

Cliff notes: Hot chicks in wet T-shirts
I have live in Houston most of my life, I am 28.
Pros:
You have an engineering degree. If it is petroleum then you should heavily consider coming here for a few years to get some good experience then move onto another location if you decide you do not like it here. Houston is probably one of the best cities in the US to get a job w/certain types of engineering degrees.
Even in the recession Houston still made out ok compared to most other cities.
No state income tax.
Plenty to do, cities close by with even more avenues of entertainment.
People are friendlier than other big cities.
The winters will be nothing for you down here. Today the high was 71 degrees.
Cost of living is cheaper than most big cities.
Cons:
The summer, it sucks…it really sucks. Hot and humid.
Traffic. You will learn which routes to avoid at certain times. For example, avoid 290 except btwn the hours of 1am-4am.
Illegal immigration.
I am not saying Houston is better than Chicago, it is different. If you are single and you cannot find another job offer close to the one DOW (good company) is offering then I would heavily consider moving down here. At worst you gain a couple years of experience that furthers your professional career. Then you can look to move to another city or back to Chicago and get an even better job with the experience you have gathered.

I live in Florence and go to school in Camden City. It’s bad to worse.
While we’re on the topic of Texas, anyone know what Austin is like?

Austin is like the giant gem in the midst of the grand sceptre that is texas. I love Austin- I currently live just outside of Houston myself, but when I go to grad school, I hope I get into UT.

I’ve spent most of my time in austin… born and raised… but I’ve spent time all over. Currently in new york. Austin is the best city in the country… nothing compares… and nothing gives you every single thing a person could want. Even politically Austin gives you the best of both world. The only con could be the summer heat… but you get used to it. I hope I can move back to austin soon tbh but I don’t see if happening for a while.
x a couple million on whoever said TX rocks. I was raised mostly in San Antonio, and I can’t wait to get back.
Not sure on the validity of this. I really dislike this band, but the song is clever.
