I’ll say that when he is actually on topic and doesn’t stray too much Lil’ Wayne is a great MC. Listen to his drought mixtapes and his ryhme from Fat Joe’s “We Takin Over” he is on fire at times.
Also Sheek Louch from the Lox.

Lil Wayne is one of the most overrated rappers ever. Some people actually think he is one of the best. His flows are nothing but one liners and wack rhymes, not to mention his voice is annoying.
“I heard somebody say church, ima need a suit / ima need a coupe / i won’t need a roof / flyer than Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice”
“They said I couldn’t play football I was too small. they say I couldn’t play basketball I wasn’t tall. They say I couldn’t play baseball at all. And now everyday of my life I ball.”
WOW great stuff.

2nd lyric is actually funny LOLL
I think lil wayne has some witty lyrics, and i personally like his work. Hes better featuring than in his own songs.
Burt Parks is a better MC dead, than anyone else alive.

Yes…and no. I was thinking about him as well.

I’m glad you mentioned Q-Tip, but I think the reason he hasn’t gotten recognition is more because his last album came out like 10 years ago.
On the other hand, if you ask anybody around 30 what the greatest hip hop albums are, chances are he’ll mention at least one Tribe album. ATCQ gets a lot of recognition in that respect.
As far as the underrated, mainstream, I don’t know. It seems like anyone mainstream is already getting pretty well recognized. I guess I’d have to agree with Black Thought. The Roots are well known, but more so for actually playing instruments and putting on some great live shows, not for Black Thought’s skills.
Blu
Andre 3000
Masta Ace
Kid Cudi
JAY ELECTRONICA
AZ
Phonte
Black Thought
Royce Da 5 9
Eli Porter ![]()
and not everyone will agree but i don’t think Young Buck gets enough run

HA! I think that will go right over most people’s heads.

But if you watch some of his flows from way back (on YouTube) they are impressive as fuck. Even during live shows he throws out some wicked flows.
Pussy Galore and Thought@Work and Quills have some of the best Black Thought flows.
I still think Nelly’s Country Grammar is truly underrated for a song that went mainstream, and it is an example of how something mainstream can even BE underrated. In this case, it was underrated for the right thing (the flows) and overrated for something else (the beat/video or whatever). That’s the only way something mainstream could be considered ‘underrated.’ At least, that’s my take.

I know he’s skilled. It’s just not really what The Roots are known for. That’s why I say he could be considered underrated.
I agree here and would even go as far as saying most of the Country Grammar album was pretty damn good lyrically.

circa Back For the First Time id agree, but right now, not so much.
REDMAN!

Maybe I’m crazy but I actually thought that that second verse was quite witty. He has stuff like this.
Listenin’ to the anthem
Weezy then band man, “One Man Band Man”
Ya girl with me, cell phone she no answer
He so sweet make her wanna lick the wrapper, so I let her lick the rapper
She take care of me and all me homeboy after
Jump off, jump off, the girl is a jump off
I let her snort a mountain and she just jumped off
Jump off, jump off, you know she a jump off
Pull my dick out and watch her jump on jump off
You make it so hard when it sound so basic
Chevy grill lookin’ like a set of new braces
Southside baby, we outside baby, smokin’ on a spinach like Popeye baby
‘J’adore ah les femmes’, yeah I love my riches, ‘bonjour’ money and ‘au revoir’ bitches
‘Geant ou petite’, we do it the biggest, and new nae rats mean we ain’t snitches
Now can ya tell me how good my French is: “voulez-vous coucher avec moi bitches?”
Deny him if you will but that shit was tight.

i have a shirt of Adriana Lima that says Bonjour Money on it
Help me out.
Is “Emcee” like the lead rapper person? Or, can that be someone else?
Like can you say “I play the record player ‘wiki-wiki-scratchy’ thing, but I’m also the Emcee”.
Or, can you be a lead guitarist and Emcee? Is emcee a position in the group like ‘drummer’ or ‘tuba-ist’ or ‘Mouth Beatbox-er’?
Do you advertise for an emcee like “Wanted: Lead emcee wanted for phly rap band. Must wear expensive jeans and can’t be long distance call from 781”?
Something like that?

"The term “MC” can mean different things to different people. To Rakim, it meant “move the crowd.” To many rappers, it means “microphone controller,” someone focused only on verbs, nouns, similes, metaphors and flow.
(For others, it just means “making cheddar.”) But for Wyclef Jean, before anything else, “MC” truly means “master of ceremonies” – someone who orchestrates everything from beats and rhymes to mood and emotion."
“The title MC means Master of Ceremony. Some people who MC don’t know what the term means.”
-From Midnight Marauders
from purely a sales point Jadakiss is heavily underrated, he has the respect but doesn’t seem to sell that well. He comes through on guest spots(songs with mariah and styles is ridiculous) and mixtapes.
lil scrappy - his album bred to die born to live(or something similar) was great but didn’t do that well.
common - since linking up with kanye it seems that he’s been doing better with sales, most people dig his music. Tell me a person who has consistently put out great music(apart from scarface and ghostface).
the problem with lil wayne is he drops one hot line a verse and that’s what most people remember. I’m a fan especially of songs such as I feel like dying, something you forgot and bird call remix…but he is overrated
pretty much everyone from wu-tang clan(today, not back in the 90’s) ghostface, gza, rza still drop heat sadly intelligent rhymes no longer sell.
