“basque” is an entire ethnic group. they were the indigenous race of europe before the indo-europeans came; they were slaughtered and driven back by barbarian hordes, until they wound up mostly in what is now northern spain.
some of them do have a radical separatist movement though; i forget what it’s called. they want their own autonomous state, independent from the spanish government. they don’t want their 7,000 year old indigenous culture to go extinct.
i know this because i’m part basque. i’m not separatist and i don’t speak euskara, but i know some things about the old ways, and what the assimilation of caucasian culture has done to cause rifts in my own family. i can understand why they would want to assert their ethnic independence; everything about spanish culture is alien to their own world view and linguistic conceptions.
