Russian mafia is on the rise. MS-13 is actually considered one of, if not the, current most powerful group in North America. Their membership spreads through Latin America, North America, parts of the African continent, and even Europe. They run military grade weapons, launder cash, etc.
Sure, many have tattoos, but consider that tons of ex-military etc do as well. Subtlety is not a requirement for successful crime, especially on the foot soldier end. Furthermore, their name, Mara Salvatrucha- roughly means “Salvadoran Warrior” (I think) and they started out as former guerrilla fighters.
There’s more to this that’s current, and probably not in any textbook.
Consider this: the FBI placed them on the top of their “keep an eye on” list. If I may give a word of caution to a (I’m assuming) potential Law Enforcement person of some kind- don’t let your prejudices and biases cloud your judgement. Just cuz homie’s got tats and bis and wears colors on his head doesn’t mean he’s not as dangerous as someone who doesn’t. Just dangerous in a different way.
Don’t forget the other “non-traditional” groups either. I mean, by what standards do we determine “the most powerful”? Colombians are god in Colombia, but the Russians own the motherland. The “peasantry” in each country would say the most powerful are the ones holding the swords over their heads at home-true or not.

Probably not what youre looking for, but without a doubt the biggest criminal organization in the 20th century was the CIA. The CIA makes the rest of the organizations listed here real small potatoes.

Right, and then you’ve got this ex-spy poisoning in London at the moment. I read on BBC that the chemical he was posioned with, 210-Polonium, is so rare that only about 100g are made annually. You certainly need some contacts/resources to get your hands on that stuff. It’s difficult to speculate who was involved (ie. Putin, Russian Mob, etc. etc. -most likely Russian, though), but I’d have a hard time seeing a group like MS-13 getting their hands on that stuff. And CIA’s MO would be something like an explosive cell phone.

Exactly. The Russian Mob is made up of highly educated, and intelligent criminal minds. If the Soviet Union hadn’t fallen they’d still be doctors, KGB agents, high ranking military officers, Olympic all-stars, etc. MS-13, while certainly the most dangerous group in North America, is made up mostly of street toughs with little formal education. Some of the members of the Russian mob have worked on and guarded nuclear arsenals, and lethal chemical agents. I wouldn’t want to be on their shit list that’s for sure.
Wouldn’t a more useful discussion be how to go about killing every last one of these groups and their members? You guys act like they aren’t evil that needs to be destroyed or something.
